We propose a novel type of planar-to-spatial deployable structures that we call elastic geodesic grids. Our approach aims at the approximation of doubly curved free-form surfaces with spatial grids of bent lamella which can be deployed from a planar configuration using a simple kinematic mechanism. Such grids result in easy to fabricate and easy to deploy spatial structures which combine physics and aesthetics. Based on theoretical considerations from differential geometry, we propose an entire framework for the design, generation, physical simulation, and fabrication of elastic geodesic grids. We also present several results with varying complexity as well as fabricated prototypical examples. Moreover, we provide an empirical proof of our approach by comparing computed results to fabricated models. Our method is intended as a design and form-finding tool in architecture and other creative disciplines and it gives the designer a fast and easy way for the creation of complex physical structures.

Wow this is awesome. I can already see their use in the fashion industry. For making collapsible corsets to size-varying moulages. Imagine having a single moulage to work for all sizes, the size of which can be adjusted by simple actions like pulling strings or rotating screws attached to those critical points!!

I'm reminded of the "gridshell" building at the Weald & Downland Museum.

This feels like a foundational piece of the puzzle for soft body robotics. Great stuff!

Amazing work msa, this is so under-rated, I can't believe this has only 2k view. This deserves millions!

Such a brilliant work! I always love when projects are generalized to a mathematical concept. Are there any thoughts to provide solutions for surfaces with more than four corners? And how about making a transformation between two 3D surfaces? I am just curious, but keep going with your work. It is wonderful :)

Thank you! Transforming from planar state to a surface is a special case of transformation between surfaces. So in general, the concept could also work for transformations between surfaces to some extent. Yes, we are working on some generalizations of the concept.

Great video @derprzem ! Where can I find a blue print or calculator, for a simple geodesic grid build? Thanks a lot!

What kind of material could this kind of grid be invested with so as to perform without producing riples?
@derprzem
@derprzem 3 года назад
Needs to be "enough" elastic. Wooden lamellae, but also acrylic glass can work to some extent.

@@derprzem I meant what kind of material these grids could be covered with, not made of. Sorry if my question wasn't clearly stated.

@@tryphonkorm i can think of a fabric like spandex, or a strong and strechable film like TPU.

I see what you're saying, but how does this help the gender studies department? This seems like it might be hard for the Humanities to understand and thus will exacerbate "inequality." You should think of them before you produce useful things! You'll make them feel bad.
