Hi everyone, have been watching a few YT videos on FP burn out that have been circulating on Fountain Pentube of late, and I kinda relate to many of them, also watched a few on culling our collections and trying to maybe reduced it down to ten pens because of..... fill in the blank lol

Thanks for sharing, Katie! This whole thing has been very thought provoking hasn't it?

Absolutely! But also invigorating, you know what I mean? I'm looking at my collection with new eyes and wanting to spend more time with each of the pens instead of focusing on what to buy next lol!!!

I appreciate your candor. I started down this road last year and so many of the RU-vidrs show unboxings of expensive fountain pens. And in this day and age, $200-300 USD in pens is crazy. I am taking a no buy for a while. And honestly, my Lami, Kawekos and Twsbies are my favorites.

thats exactly it right??? crazy prices out there, my most fave pens are the ones that cost me less, I'm talking about my Moonman and Majohn pens, $37 bucks each... the gift that keeps on giving. So yeah, I've slowed right down now too, and I'm happy that I have. Thanks for watching 🤗

I felt the same way about Crochet. It was a hobby that turned into business, along with making videos on YT and posting on Instagram. I got really burnt out with it all and not only gave up my business, but don't crochet as a hobby anymore. I only recently started enjoying Fountain pens, but I want to learn from my crochet experience and not get overwhelmed by it and burn out. I'm just doing my thing and enjoy talking to people online, learning about pens, watching videos etc. I have a couple of pens, but I'm curating rather than buying everything that's pretty. As hard as that is 😂 🤗❤️

yes I feel you, it can get very overwhelming very quickly. It's good to have a hobby though, so I'm glad that you are enjoying your fountain pen journey. I'd really love to learn how to crotchet, was saying that to myself just today! lol

@@afountainpenawakening it's a relaxing hobby that allows you to be creative while making something functional. I will go back to it eventually. I just needed to cleanse myself of all the negative experiences I had. The funny thing is I think collecting customised crochet hooks helps me appreciate fountain pens.

It is what we create which inspires me about fountain pens, inks, and delicious tactile texture of paper. That delicate meticulous thinking, getting our ideas on paper. I only need one good fountain pen, but I want three distinct kinds of ink to go with my creations. Therefore, I have three pens as a minimum. Red ink, blue ink, and dark ink. To embellish my writing, I use washed out pastel like inks. That requires brushes, dip pens, and stub nib fountain pens. I see where this is going. I only need one fountain pen, but love using more of them. I only need one ink, but I love using more of them. I only need one paper, but I write enough to fill many books. It is about the experience, and about what treasures I create.

I’m new to fountain pens & I’m already burned out on currently inked & unboxings. I’m enjoying learning how to use it & honestly I’d love to hear more of peoples feelings using them & hobbies. I’m enjoying taking my tea, journal & fountain pen on hikes & finding beautiful places to sit & journal. Enjoying the feel of the pen & sound of it on the paper. It helps me slow down ❤

yes I love that, exactly what a hobby should be about, to help you slow down and enjoy and savour the moment. I mean I went crazy the first month of my journey, coz I wanted to try everything lol, but pens are pretty pricey so I had to force myself to be careful with my spending. Problem is, it's not only the pens, it's the inks, the paper, the journals, the paraphernalia to clean and ink your pens with... and on and on. But once you find your sweet spot, then you can sit and just enjoy ... It does bring me a lot of joy 😀

I appreciate the time you put into all your videos Katie and enjoy them all not just the unboxings. Your videos always have a nice chilled vibe. Here in the uk we can't buy ink samples so I find it useful to watch swatching videos so that I can develop more of an idea of inks I might like to buy in a bottle. Enjoy your pens, happy writing!
@afountainpenawakening
@afountainpenawakening 3 месяца назад
aww thank you some much, it's really heartening to hear your thoughts and I am so very glad that you do enjoy my content. Oh that is a bummer!!! I did not know that in UK you could not get your hands on samples? That kinda sucks. If you want me to send you some samples of some of my inks or if you have a list of things you may want to try, let me know I can maybe get them for you here. Alternatively, you can check out The Desk Bandit which is here in Australia, they have lots of samples to choose from, dunno what they charge for international shipping though? Yeah, there is a real struggle for us in the rest of the world to get our hands on stuff right? It seems that the US has all the goodies😅
@Tamara-pens
@Tamara-pens 3 месяца назад
@@afountainpenawakening Thanks Katie very kind of you to offer. I have been offered samples by Shauna too but I'm not on Instagram so we couldn't swap details in a safe way. I haven't done too badly I have some Herbin in the 10ml bottles and was lucky to find a bunch of 12ml diamine bottles on cult pens last year, some standard diamine and some diamine X cult pens and my husband bought me the full set of platinum mixable inks so I mostly try to mix dupes of things that catch my eye. Diamine inks are also ridiculously cheap in 30ml bottles being from the UK. It certainly does seem to be difficult for any of us outside the US.

It seems, like you said, that some people are buying pens to do an unboxing video, sort of like”showing off” and enabling others. Is it because they want video stats? Then these people turn around and sell the pen(s) they just bragged about and start the process all over again, buy, video, enable and then sell. I’m being harsh here, but that seems to be what’s happening. I much prefer videos about inking, swatching and using pens rather than only showing the next new thing. I love my pens, even ones I rarely use. I buy what I like and keep them for my collection and to use.
@afountainpenawakening
@afountainpenawakening 3 месяца назад
yes it kinda seems it may be the way for some of the people who may want to grow their YT channel. I had not thought of that, but it certainly makes a lot of sense because how can one afford to buy so many right? Well, I can't for sure lol, everyone's disposable income is different though, so 🤷. But I'm like you, I buy pens that I am curious about and want to try or that I find beautiful and I keep them in my collection, even the ones I don't use. I do not have a massive collection, and so I feel that I am being deliberate in my choices. Maybe one or two pens I bought, don't really work but I'm still keeping them as they are a part of my collection. I have gifted a few to my Aunt and my nephews as they expressed interest in them, but they are still staying in the family!!! lol

@@afountainpenawakening I have also watched Liane Likes' video as well! Yes, comfort is so important when it comes to fountain pens - I guess for shorter uses it can be okay? I also have found that my hands prefer some girth with pens as well! With slimmer pens, I have found that I grip the pen harder for some reason, and that make sit quite uncomfortable. Hey Katie - thank you for sharing. I also watched PBR‘s video on the subject and it hit home. Chris Seanz also published a very good video on the topic. To me, it’s the industry oversaturating the market. How many new colors of the same pen can they push out in a year, or limited editions every few weeks. Inks too. It’s crazy. It’s also hard to keep up with all of the fountain pen content being published on YT. It seems that I find new creators almost everyday in my timeline. I do really like your videos, the aesthetic and your thoughts. Thanks again!

Well put, Katie! I've used fountain pens for 55 years, and as my principal pens for at least 30; but my passion for them as a collector of pens and writing experiences has only taken off in the past decade. In that amount of time, you can imagine that my energy for the journey as a hobby has waxed and waned. But, it is so much more fun with people like you sharing their experiences and discoveries on video. A thousand thanks!

I am so disgusted by the pen shaming going on at the moment! Learn to love the differences - one of my mantras and for me, it's what makes life interesting and I love seeing what people have and use that's different to me - I LOVE THAT, THE DIFFERENCES! What I don't appreciate is people who would diss me due to the pens I DO have! So be respectful of others peeps and learn to love the differences! Love you Katie - always bring a smile to my face! x
