I am a new fan tackling gundam chronologically. (The actual timeline) So I started with Origins and Thunderbolt but after that I watched 08th MS Team and so on so forth. I think the thing I do to make it so I don't immediately burn out is to just take a break and come back. After watching stardust memory I didn't begin watching zeta for another month or so because I was just gundamed out. I am about halfway through zeta right now and I took a break again and ill pick it up in probably a week or so to finish the second half. I don't personally believe there is a best method to take in the franchise, whatever floats your boat tends to be best I say.

I should clarify by chronological I meant release order. What you are doing is actually order of interest, which is perfectly fine, thought I should clear that up.
@tedhodge4830

I started by watching Zeta Gundam, then CCA and F91, then ZZ, and back to first Gundam, then Victory, all of this over a decade ago. I refused to watch Origin or Thunderbolt, or any of the OVAs, until very recently. There is no "right way" to watch them "in order." The entire reason I went back to watch first Gundam was to try and understand why Char goes full Snidely Whiplash in CCA after Zeta, and I still don't understand it. It always makes me roll my eyes when people recommend watch orders. The only thing that happened when I took my girlfriend through the series is that she was constantly confused about which decade we were in, or what the order of events of the series was supposed to be. Anyway, the only real way to start Gundam is to bust out the cathode ray TV and pop on some Toonami Gundam Wing reruns, followed by haphazardly gluing together a Gundam Deathscythe model kit.

I think no matter what approach someone takes to watching any massive series, the key to getting through it, is to just not treat it like homework, and only be commited to the part that you are currently watching. So like... don't watch ZZ Gundam just so you can get to watch Char's Counterattack. Just watch ZZ Gundam because it's ZZ Gundam.

Man, I just want you know, how much I enjoy and look forward to you videos. It's so hard to find to find 'good' mecha content. Also I hate the argument that if a work has "toys" it is just a commercial. It is an insult to creators that they automatically coast if the work they made has cool designs. There is nothing wrong with cool design that a person might want to have on a shelve. (even if i can't afford them). It also seems to dismiss aesthetics as a part of the art. Sorry, I'm rambling. Good job excited for the next video.
@tedhodge4830
@tedhodge4830 7 месяцев назад
From Tomino's perspective, the toys and sponsors were a means to an end - his ability to create what he wanted. They were also something that got in the way, but in the end, he pretty much did what he wanted. To quote Tomino regarding first Gundam, "I felt bad for the sponsor, but...."

Personal the only 'Watch Gundam' Answers I came up with were: *1.* In Universe Chronological: Starting From The Origin or the earliest works in the One Year War and march forward in the U.C. Timeline with occasional ventures into the A.U.s *2.* Pick an A.U. ANY AU: Wing, After War, 00, SEED, AGE Whatever (as long its not in the UC Timeline)! If you like one of those. You'll probably like the Rest of it. *3.* ABSOLUTELY SCHIZOPHRENIC (or the SRW Way or the CHAOS Way): Because of Gundam Wing's Well acknowledged 'Diet UC Timeline Condensing' that serves as its plot with 5 Hot Bishonen guys in the Mechs you could 'theoretically: Make some horrifying Frankenstein's Monster Where: -Amuro's Falling into the RX-78's Cockpit -Kira getting into the Freedom for the First Time -The Sanc Kingdom Arc in Wing -Setsuna F Seiei crashes a Mobile Suit Test with his EXIA -The occasional appearance of Domon Kasshu having a Gundam Fight for an Episode and then flying off somewhere else. ALL of which happen at roughly the Same time like the Super Robot Wars games do to 'blend Mecha properties' and go nuts.

The first Build Fighters is an incredibly subversive and simultaneously earnest series that celebrates the hobby of Gunpla + the sheer fanaticism we harbor for the franchise. It has no right being as good as it still is.

Side note, apart from the anime, which has by and large been hit and miss, my new great love is the novels. For all the flak that Tomino gets as a writer and a director, I have now discovered his novels at the very end of my journey, and I regret that I didn't pick up the original three books straight off the bat. The original Gundam novel is sick, and I have yet to be let down by Tomino's written works thus far. Currently digging into Hathaway's Flash and Hi-Streamer. The Origin manga by Yasuhiko is the other side of what made Gundam great - a perfect manga by an artist at his peak. Probably singularly the greatest Gundam work of any variety ever made. I am still stunned that no one mentions this when charting out boring watchlists. For anyone skeptical of what the series has to offer, just take a look at Yasuhiko's absolutely marvelous watercolor paintings for The Origin. The Origin manga is widely regarded as a masterpiece. Both the novel and the manga are actually a lot more enjoyable than the original anime, either the TV version or the film trilogy, IMHO, and they serve at least as a delightful side dish to the animated work. I think both Yasuhiko and Tomino would readily admit this, so why shouldn't I? They are both more complete, and less flawed works that anything that has come before or since.

Although I agree that the tv series is the best place to start than the movies, I did show my brother the movies, for two reasons: 1. I hadn’t seen the movies yet so I wanted to check them out and 2. My brother is notoriously terrible at watching tv shows. He loves AOT, but he is still on episode 79, which is when we last watched it together. But yes, I do agree that the tv shows is both better paced, and a lot less overwhelming.
@argonbolt
@argonbolt Год назад
I would reiterate that seeing the movies as an in on its own can work, I'm mainly talking about people who only rush through the movies and never give the show a shot. Usually because they are trying to binge everything. Ultimately if the movies help you get into gundam and the show then that works fine. Hopefully that clears that up.

@@argonbolt not to mention a lot of the “good stuff” that people remember Gundam for are in the first series, so I don’t know why people want to run through it. It’s probably the most iconic of the series, with Zeon and the Federation being the definitive Gundam factions, even though Zeta is technically more popular. Hell, one could even argue that it’s the best series in the franchise, even if I enjoy Zeta and 0080 more, I wouldn’t fault anyone for saying that the best one they’ve seen is 0079.
@tedhodge4830

I'm going to be completely honest, what my official opinion effectively boils down to is - watch 0080 War in the Pocket. As a distillation of Gundam into a communicable format where I wouldn't change one single line, one single frame of animation, it is nigh on perfection. I make general recommendations to people for film, animation, cinema, art, from the standpoint that I think they would enjoy it and seize on the value of it. And the only work of art in the franchise where I have zero reservations is War in the Pocket. You can watch nothing else other than War in the Pocket and get it. There is no prerequisite, no qualification needed. No deep dive into gunpla or Wikipedia required. I would put it up there with Ghost in the Shell, Akira, or Spirited Away. It justifies its own existence, and at the same time it qualifies as what I consider to be mandatory viewing. I recommend nothing else. Where one goes after that is their own business.

Kind of want to do a clarification that Amuro's nationality/hometown changes depending on the iteration of 0079. In the tv anime he was originally from the San'in region in Japan, in the movie trilogy it was changed to Canada and in The Origin manga it was changed to Rosarito, Mexico.

If we are of course following the canon set up by Tomino that leads up to Gyaku Char then we can state that Amuro is Canadian merely because that canon is a follow up to the films.

Regarding "79 Mobile Suit Gundam anime has old animation" line, it's not that it's old, it's that it was a TV show completed as a rush hackjob with tons of the animation subcontracted out to other studios, and their animation director (Yasuhiko) was so overworked, he literally went unconscious and had to be hospitalized halfway through the production due to heart problems. Even the staff acknowledged how bad the animation was in the original show, and part of Yasuhiko's motivation for working on the film trilogy was to fix the animation that he missed out on while he was in the hospital. You wouldn't say that Studio Ghibli's early works, or that Disney's early works were poorly animated because they're "old," they're incredible and still hold up to anything made today. To paraphrase Yasuhiko, Sunrise was a small studio, and "Gundam wasn't even getting their best," in terms of budget and staffing. THAT's why it looks messy, not because it's old. Huge trope that should be addressed. There's a great documentary about the first series' production with interviews from Yasuhiko, Tomino, Okawara, and the producers that should be watched, as its on RU-vid. Yet people always try to tell people not to watch the trilogy for some reason I don't understand.

Saw Unicorn beginning to end first. Was confused as Hell. Then IBO beginning to end. Thought it was set in the same setting as Unicorn, so was even more confused. About a year later I watched Wing then 00 because they were on my streaming service at the time. Decided to look up Unicorn's placement in the timeline and realized it's the follow-up to 3 shows and a movie. So I said "bring it on!" and watched all of UC in release order. By the time I got back to Unicorn and watched through it again, I concluded that Unicorn is just kind of a confusing story (but not as confusing as Reconquista). Then I decided to go through all the AU's in release order too. So yeah, I went through Turn A before watching much of the post-2000's shows. Guess I failed the assignment.
