“To place the hope of one's health in the hands of the doctor is the act of an irrational animal. This, nevertheless, is what we observe in the case of certain unhappy persons who do not hesitate to call their doctors their saviors. Yet, to reject entirely the benefits to be derived from this art is the sign of a pettish nature.”
“The fact, also, that chronic illnesses persist over a long period and despite varied and painful remedies is a sign that we should amend the sins of the soul by assiduous prayer, prolonged penance, and the severe disciplinary treatment which reason may advise as adequate for the cure. Nor, because some sinners do not make good use of the art of medicine, should we repudiate all the advantages to be derived from it.”
“There is no small danger, however, that we will fall into the error of thinking that every kind of suffering requires medical relief. Not all sicknesses for whose treatment we observe medicine to be occasionally beneficial arise from natural causes, whether from faulty diet or from any other physical origin. Illness is often a punishment for sin imposed for our conversion; 'For whom the Lord loveth,’ says the Scripture, 'he chastiseth… (Prov 3:12).”
How important these words are for us today! How balanced and true!

If I’m being treated by a doctor, unless God allows the medicine to work, it’s a moot point. Ultimately, it’s Gods will. Also, over the last two years, we must be very, very careful in what pharmaceuticals we allow to be put into our bodies. Pray for us, St. Basil! ☦️

I love those verses in the gospels where people came to Jesus for healing and he directed them to a local doctor...lol. Christ is in you. Am I to believe that the healer, who now dwells in me, is now unable or unwilling to keep me well? If that's true then he is no longer the same yesterday, today, and forever. Didn't Jesus bare our sicknesses? If he did, then why do we need to carry them? Confused.

Christ can heal anyone, and often does, but He also uses physical illnesses as the means to heal us spiritually. Furthermore, it’s often to our benefit to seek help from others so that we find spiritual healing together. If we look at the lives of the saints we see the remarkable love of Christ and His salvation through illnesses, plagues, etc. St. Paisios even calls cancer a great gift (to one who can accept it) because it gives people knowledge they will die soon but also the time to repent and prepare better for the life to come. An excellent collection of Patristic teachings on this can be found in “The Holy Fathers on Illness” by Fr. Alexey Young: orthochristian.com/106274.html

@@OrthodoxWisdom Thanks for your reply and insight. Let me ask you this: Are there any scriptures of Jesus giving someone sickness as a gift or as a way to teach them something?
@stewart_92

God takes any trial and works it back towards our good and yes we learn endurance and patience, but God promises healing. Jesus demonstrated that it is Gods will to heal and since he is the image of the invisible God, I go with him. If you pray prayers of healing that put it back on God as if he hasn’t decided to heal, then your prayers lack faith in Gods word which speaks and declares our healing. I understand the reservations and not wanting to seem like “health and wealth” people… but the Word of God is the Word of God. Jesus showed us that it is always the will of God to will. So we should take a stand with faith and pray as if that word is true. Simple, childlike. Doctors are good too! They have ability to see and treat the body but we shouldn’t only depend on them, half the time they don’t know what’s going on

@@stewart_92 Well stated and thank you for your response. My main point was just that Jesus healed every single person that came to him in faith. Period. There are zero examples of him giving someone sickness as some kind of blessing or way to teach them something. At the end of the day the scriptures and more importantly Jesus should be the example not man. Heck look in Deuteronomy 28 where it lists the blessings and cursings of the Old Covenant. The Jews had divine health even under the Old Covenant. But you'll notice that all sickness and anything related to it are listed under the curses. Not blessings. Now the stipulation here was that the blessings were contingent on them keeping the 613 Mosaic Laws and animal sacrifices. And I have no issue with Doctors but I don't believe for a moment that God have us doctors or medicine. God's ways don't have side effects. God's ways don't help one but kill the other. Doctors and medicine are man's idea which is a good one for sure otherwise most Christians, past and present, would be dead since barely anyone it seems had faith in God for healing. If you believe God is teaching you some lesson with cancer then why would you bother exercising faith to be healed? Likewise if you believe it to be a blessing then will you be healed? Crazy.

How can we not put our faith in the doctor, who only asks for money and will treat you to the best of his ability, when God never heals us? If there is no fancy cuisine a man would eat the grass to survive. So when the lord of all creation is indifferent to your healing, do you not go to the doctor? Do you not put your faith in whatever his scientific reasoning produces? What is the alternative? Even if he doesn’t succeed, it is better than nothing.

What kind of healing are you speaking of? Ultimately, Christ cares most about our souls. He knows that for most us, unless we are already in possession of great humility, that physical and temporal sufferings are necessary for us to attend to our souls, to beg God for mercy, and to trust not in ourselves but in Him. Fr. Seraphim Rose captures well what I am trying to point you towards: “Why do men learn through pain and suffering, and not through pleasure and happiness? Very simply, because pleasure and happiness accustom one to satisfaction with the things given in this world, whereas pain and suffering drive one to seek a more profound happiness beyond the limitations of this world. I am at this moment in some pain, and I call on the Name of Jesus-not necessarily to relieve the pain, but that Jesus, in Whom alone we may transcend this world, may be with me during it, and His will be done in me. But in pleasure I do not call on Him; I am content then with what I have, and I think I need no more. And why is a philosophy of pleasure untenable?-because pleasure is impermanent and unreliable, and pain is inevitable. In pain and suffering Christ speaks to us, and thus God is kind to give them to us, yes, and evil too-for in all of these we glimpse something of what must lie beyond, if there really exists what our hearts most deeply desire.” Please share your thoughts if you wish to.
