My first men’s dress shirt quilt is almost complete. I found three 2xl lavender colored shirts in different patterns right next to each other on a rack at Goodwill! Added a yard of white and quickly found a yard of the perfect grey polka dot as blender. It all came together so easily. Total serendipity. This quilt was just meant to be. Thank you so much for sharing your process.

That's so exciting, Jo! I, too, wish I could see it! ❤️ I love it when a plan comes together like that---meant to be, indeed! 🤩

 I made two different blocks. One was a nine patch of half square triangles. The other block is a four patch surrounded by 2 1/2 inch strips. For the setting I alternated the two blocks and sashed and cornerstoned them. Pretty much made it up as I went along and it worked out well which is another indication that it was meant to be. 😂

I like the graduation quilt idea, but here is a warning. I did a navy and white quilt that was ruined when it bled. Really heartbreaking and VERY obvious. It is hard to prewash precuts but you absolutely must, color catchers with the finished top are not enough. Also, it is hard to tell in advance which fabrics will bleed, even from the same manufacturer. Another advantage of using shirts- they are already washed.

The backing for the Magnolia quilt is perfect! 👌 It's good to go through our WIP's periodically and as a we're all makers here, it's fun to share them ♥ With your black fabrics for the Graduation quilt, keep in mind that black dye is generally brown or blue based, so to tie the blues in you'll want more blue based blacks and as others have mentioned, be careful when washing. A splash of vinegar might help too. ♥
@TheCatBirdQuilts

Good reminder about the blue-blacks vs the brown-blacks! We may find ourselves having to incorporate both so that will be...interesting! 😂🤓😉 And yes, as for WIP's I need to do another deep dive into my white basket and figure out what are the next steps for each project! Always something to do in a quilter's life, right?! 😘

I did buy the magnolia pattern and have made a block. Love it and plan to make more in the future. I did take your advise, took out all my fabrics, played with them, happily came up with a plan and have started working on a quilt for one of my grandsons. I am hoping to have at least three queen size quilts completed by Christmas. One is at the quilter, one is a block of the month project, and now my new idea. That is about my limit. Thank you for your videos, when I feel stuck they get me going.

The Magnolia quilt is going to be so pretty ! Also if you are looking for blenders for the Graduation quilt, maybe look for a navy and black grunge Moda had a great Navy grunge that has some black (iirc) in it. Might work - over all Grunge can do a lot of heavy lifting when blending. I was never a fan of grunge (it looked dirty and uneven to me lol) but I have used some I was given and it really played well with my other fabric choices. Love the fabric choice for the babyquilt! I have that same fabric with pink flowers that I used for my youngest daughter's quilt.

@@TheCatBirdQuilts Grunge fabric surprised me lol but in a good way. Tehre are so many color combinations which makes it great for a blender. Unless... you can find the "perfect ombre fabric" which is harder since you would be cutting it and not getting the full effect.

I’m off to collect my daughter from University tomorrow and they have a great fabric store; we don’t have so many as you seem to have in the US so it’s a great treat. Top of my shopping list is backing fabric and binding for my temperature quilt. I was going to go with a single fabric backing, but now you’ve got me thinking about a confetti backing with a white button background (they have that Kaffe Fassett print in stock). I’m looking forward to seeing that backing video you mentioned. How are you going to make sure the top and bottom are square to each other and stay that way through the quilting process? - I have enough trouble getting them to stay still enough not to develop tucks! All your quilts are soooo pretty and I’m really impressed that you find the time to quilt, film, work and always have your rooms so neat and tidy. I find I have to abandon the housework to fit in time to sew after work. Thank heaven for working from home and not having to commute any more.

Julie, my "rooms" are NOT so neat and tidy!! The floors need vacuuming constantly, all flat surfaces need dusting, and I almost always need to declutter! 😱 But we're not going to show that on RU-vid, now are we?! 😘 If I showed you the pile of detritus on my dining room table while we are filming, you'd immediately feel better, although your opinion of me might decline some! 😂 Just know you're not alone in abandoning housework! (and Paul is a huge help and does much to keep our house together, for the record.) I'm so glad you're considering a confetti background---it was super fun to sew and make and those little triangles just give me joy! I think the Kaffe Fassett white button background would be SO awesome!! If you're on Instagram, you'll have to find me and send me photos when it's done! ❤️

I'm immediately struck by all the choices your daughter made. I'm wondering? Would some denim look cottons in that washed out black/gray help blend? There are REALLY dark blue denims too...but not sure you can get that look in a quilting cotton. I can see this 9 patch set on point....hummm? I wonder if that would make blending easier? I LOVE watching your thought process...I've really learned some important color lessons! THANKS I can not wait to see the entire quilt with the "Confetti" back! LOVE THAT IDEA...I'm DEFINITELY going to incorporate that into one of my future quilts.

The confetti backing is perfection!!!!! If you are going to use the darker fabric as a border on the back I would suggest taking the quilt and backing to a longarmer and have them baste it for you. They will be able to more easily centre the quilt on the back. A video on measuring and applying a border would be great! Fun confetti backing! Loved the reference to Misty from Missouri Star. Good one. Oh, Paul is doing overhead photo shots now! Have you read "The Secret Lives of Color" by Kassia St. Clair? I first heard of it when I got back to quilting from Pat Sloan's videos.

Susan, I haven’t read that book but now it looks like I’m gonna have to check it out!❤ We love the overhead cam-it gets the best detailed views of fabric!😍

What about putting the color in your Sashing in order to highlight your linen block units? 🤔
@TheCatBirdQuilts

Elizabeth, that could be lovely! I don’t think I’ll use sashing tho-something about keeping the lines of those orange peels melding into one another is very appealing to me!

When you wash your thrift store finds - do you have a specific detergent that you use and do you use fabric softener?
@TheCatBirdQuilts
@TheCatBirdQuilts Год назад
I don't really---I just use what we use for my family's laundry, which is scent-free. I do usually add at least a cup of vinegar which helps out with smells and stains. Sometimes Oxyclean powder if I want to whiten up white shirts from the thrift store. And no, I don't use fabric softener. They won't be as soft out of the washer and dryer as they are when you get them (especially if they were dry-cleaned, had a coating on them, or if you use vinegar) but they soften up nicely after being sewn into a quilt and washed and dried! 🤓👍🏻

It would be helpful if you took a basic sewing and/or/quilting class so you can take some pressure off yourself when you have to make a decision. You will enjoy the process of sewing and quilting more with less stress.

I found a piece of white fabric in my stash that has a label that says cotton polyester it doesn't give percentages you are always shying away from cotton polyester can I use this in a quilt? I am really going to miss you when you move to the other program.

@jennjennedington279 Год назад
Yes you can use it but it won’t crease well if that is important for your pattern, and it won’t shrink any of you love the crinkle when it’s all finished.

Darla, nothing will change here on RU-vid--I'll be doing weekly videos just as I have been! (so you won't have to miss me! 😘) Jennifer did a great job answering your question, and I concur! Also if you need it for a long stretch of fabric, be sure and use pins because it cotton-poly crawls terribly under the sewing needle!

Cindy, I'm not using someone else's pattern---I just figured I'd make the orange peels and sew them together (using the template from the Copihue quilt by Cotton + Joy.) So....🤷🏻‍♀️ Happy to share it with you when I'm done though! 🥰

Binding - love the brown! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ifwIagF90F0.html The quilt behind Michelle & the last one that she talks about in this video, use those off cut triangles. Mine are in my crazy patch scraps bag - invariably, I need "just a bit" on a corner, so they come in handy there. checkerboard - 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 I'm ready to start mine too. (almost) Take a look at chalk & charcoal by Jennifer Sampou for Robert Kaufman, color Midnight especially may be the bridge, (I bought teal & midnight & the darks in other colors because I want all the darks.) BLACK - just like when you were playing with grays & I mentioned the wide variance, Its so true with black too, because most are just a dark gray, so they also have cool & warm undertones.
