Sorry for taking so long with this video, I literally had to build a shed to house the battery! 😅 In this video we mount the Batrium BMS ontop of the battery, and hope I don't let the magic smoke out of anything.

This looks promising as a second life for Nissan Leaf cells. Thanks for sharing your project figuring out how to reconfigure the Leaf cells as a 48 volt battery for home energy storage.

Waiting patiently for my 24KwH leaf to reach ~15KwH capacity to do something like this. Thank you Dala (the great)!

Just grabbed one for my 15kwh setup. Saving a few bucks a day by shaving peak rates. Batrium with victron charger inverter is awesome, if a cell drops out , it will communicate to the victron

Do you think a JKong BMS 150A 2A balancing current could do the job
@DaleKlein
@DaleKlein 2 года назад
It could be good to stagger the bus cable connections to top and bottom cells, to keep current more equal within the modules. As is, the top modules have the lowest resistance path.

The BMS system looks like it's just a Battery Monitoring System ? How can you control individual cell charging with the current setup ? You could end up with a reverse charged cell or an over/under charged cell.

No risk, this BMS does balancing via resistors.

Hi Dala, how are the regulations in Finland for batteries connected to the "grid"? Does your inverter have ups functionality making the install more or less blackout-immune? Or is it one of those inverters that shut off regardless when the grid is down? I am from Sweden and have solar with ups functionality but have not yet heard of a resonable solution that fulfills the grid companys safety requirements.
@DalasEVRepair
@DalasEVRepair Год назад
Hej, this inverter shuts off right when grid goes down, to avoid backfeeding. But higher tier models exist that can isolate from grid with contactors, and run the entire house offgrid. Our electrical provider has a list of approved inverters, that fulfil the grid code requirements.

Arranged my Nissan cells 14S20P, made from 3 Nissan cars. Got a Batrium WM5 and I am not that pleased with it. It needs a windows computer, Mac&Linux only here, so had to buy a Win Laptop to do firmware updates. Cell balancing of the WM5 is of course way too little for a 72kWH pack and the WM has problems. It shows a high voltage when balancing and triggers shut off. Software error. So I bought a chinese balancer with BT, works well. Cells did not drift apart the last 3 years. Also Batrium do not offer MQTT to read data, you need other tools. With every firmware update they change the data list, so your MQTT reading tool needs an update. Wifi dropped very often from the Batrium with previous firmware versions. Next time I will look for a tool that just ready battery data and a separate balancer. Reading voltages and SoC must be 100% stable.

@DalasEVRepair Год назад
Yeah I would not go the Batrium route if I would start over. I would just use the entire pack as-is with 400V
@t.d.5804
@t.d.5804 Год назад
@@DalasEVRepair I am planning a new system, 400V inverters are now available, but batteries are SW locked, would choose a VW pack, they are easier to get here, if only someone could unlock them. Greetings from Germany and thank you for your videos :-)

You are talking about "active balancing" - but i think this is not what the given BMS is able to do with these longmons but these are rather passive balancers with a control bus ?!

Hi Dala, fantastic work 👍I have almost the same setup but Batrium don't have any LeafMon's for 2 months 😔but they have recomended CellMate K9 instead I know this is not exactly the same as your setup but I was wondering if you could share your wiring diagram for the cells and your LongMon's etc please? Thanks Dala 😁

I have my leaf cells in 2 stacks. 12 per stack. I have them running a couple 24 volt inverters. They seem to be working great. Do you know how many amp hours 24 modules are? They are from a 2012 leaf that had 30 thousand miles when wrecked. I dont have a bms and i should have done the 48 volts but i was new to this and set them up as 24 volts. This seems strange but they seem to have most their capacity from 23.5 volts to 25 volts. Once they drop below23.5 they definitely dont have much left in them so running at 24 volts seems better than id first thought. Ive never had a bms but id love to have a good bms.

? Can I use that BMS if i do not have a Microsoft Windows operating system? I mostly only use Android, then chrome, and in the closet is Linux....
@DalasEVRepair

You can use virtual systems to allow it to run on Linux or AppleOS. But software is Windows only for now!

Hi Dala, In January 2022 I purchased a 2013 LEAF (Hooray). I have noticed in winter (southern hemisphere) that the range I could get from a full charge was less than I got during warmer weather. Then I remembered that Finland gets cold. So my first question is have you noticed this effect in your LEAF? Second question. It is dawning on me the significance of the early LEAF not having temperature management on the battery. I know some people have retro fitted 40 kWh battery to these original 24kWh cars. Do you know of any attempts to retro fit temperature control into a LEAF battery pack? Is there much to be gained by attempting to do this? Your vids are very instructional and clearly describe what you are doing. Love them.

Hi, nice work, I've done the busbars myself on a drill press with a jig. Wasn't much fun, but when I did the second kit I realized how much easier tha your way for example. Anyway, is there any specific reason why you choose longmons as opposed to the specifically designed leafmons? A bit tidier and less hassle to secure them. Also I experienced some issue which was very likely caused by the comm cable extension, my one was in the middle of the pack. It seems to be no problem since I removed that. You mentioned you want the BMS to "work" with your inverter. I guess you referring to the CAN communication. What I noticed with my Sungrow Hybrid inverter, the parameters in the inverter are fixed, and lot more conservative than the Leaf batteries capability. Nice to have all the fancy features but the inverter itself does very good job in "other battery" mode, when the parameters are customisable. Hence the extension board in hand, adding emergency disconnect option is pretty easy. Looking forward to the coming videos.

@DalasEVRepair 2 года назад
Thanks Arpad! I wanted the longmons, since I will probably experiment with many different types of cells, these LEAF ones are just a starting point. So I didn't want to lock myself into the LEAF-formfactor! Thanks for following!

@@DalasEVRepair Another alterntive would be WatchMon-CORE + CellMake-K9. Should be cheaper. And less stuff, just cables with fuses going from teh CellMake to the cells. And I haven't figured out yet what I would need an expansion board for... 🙂
