I've got an On-one Rango from about 6 years ago. Carbon hardtail that they sold as a 650b+ at the time. It had an elevated drive side chainstay and switchable rear axle dropouts so it could also take 29 x 3.0. Still one of my favourites in the stable. Now just running 29 x 2.2 with some nice new SID Ultimate's. Barely tips the scale at 10.8kg (not bad for an XL frame). It's got some knocks and scrapes now bless it but it's still an excellent compliant and comfy XC bike. Great review Guy, keep up the good work. 👍

Always great to see an XC bike on the channel. This type of riding with plenty of exploring is right up my alley. What better bike to do it on than a hardtail.

@@morrisizing this is the exact reason I just bought a hardtail. Been on a roadie the last 7 years and thought I would skip the gravel bike and go straight for some squish up front and wider tyres. What's funny is GCN did a test to see what's faster over Paris Roubaix cobbles and the hardtail beat out the road and cx bike comfortably 😂

@GuyKesTV as someone partial to the odd TT & crit nothing wrong with a skinsuit 😉. In fact I bumped into Dave Hemmings at a VTTA 10 a couple of years ago, but I know what you mean. There is more to xc Hardtails than tape to tape riding. They excel at going out and exploring the countryside off the beaten track and given how beaten most of the roads are on the beaten track. A cycling mate did the Atlas Mountain Race last year, and the go-to bike seemed to be the good old XC Hardtail.

I was tempted with the Whippet a couple of years back. Great value. Currently running that Selcof fork on my Chisel for winter riding. It's great; and knocks my fairly standard Chisel down to 10kg! 👍

Been running one of these since 2020 and it’s been absolutely ace for Dorset XC, bike packing etc. got both a carbon and suspension fork and it’s touch and go which I prefer. Spot on with the wheels upgrade point too - made mine even more 👌

how much weight can these bikes take for bikepacking?

@@dudududuFthetories I guess the only thing you'd potentially need to worry about is overloading the seat post if you ran a really long extension out of the frame. It's a decent diameter post though not a skinny 27.2mm so I think you'd still be fine. I can't see frame bags or handlebar bags causing any issues. Mick our photographer put his SLR and some chunky lenses in a bar bag for the Morocco trip we did and the bike/stem/bar etc was fine. If you went for the rigid fork option you've got bag mounts on the legs to handle the weight.

I've had one for a couple of years now, with some smart upgrades, including wheels, it weighs in just over 10kg in an XL, including pedals and a dropper. I now ride this more than my 160mm all mountain bike. It covers ground so quickly, the lightweight wheels certainly improve the overall feel too.

A recent direct comparison would be the Specialized Chisel you built up a while back. How would you compare the two? The Chisel is supposedly with a more moden geo and probably wider tire clearance. Both bikes are on a similar price point. Note about the frame manufacturer, On one is probably using Fly Bike. They did something similar with their Free Ranger gravel frames being the Carbonda (Fly Bike) 696. Vitus by CRC does the same with their frames. Could you confirm the serial number starts with 'FB'?

I’ve got the older version, albeit same frames, and run it single speed. Flying machine. Not yet upgraded the wheels, but have it down to 9.94kg. Upgraded the finishing kit and running conti race kings though.

I was totally expecting Level T brakes on this since it's an XC bike(Level are the xc brakes) & on a budget. Was surprised to see it's the regular G2, which cost more than the Level T(& lighter TL) & are more powerful too. Geo reminds me of some of those cool 29er gravel bikes out now like the Cotic Cascade or Salsa Cutthroat with it's 100mm fork option. Those also cost more, but point is this could be a budget version of that with the rigid fork or sus fork when setup right as geo is nearly similar in some ways. Even with a carbon rigid fork with mounts like the Enve mountain fork it still be less than those aforementioned bikes. Wow

There's a Free Ranger sat here just waiting for a break in the weather to film it. I've ridden one before though and like you say it's a super versatile and surprisingly fast bike without even looking at the value. I remember it making a much pricier bike I was riding at the same time look a right lump!

I spoke with planetx 6months ago about putting a 110mm fork on my whippet, they told me I shouldn't do it at all.....yet they now give that option. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Is that an older generation of frame then? I run a 120mm fork after asking them they said it was good for it no problems.

@@Tony-pt1tt mine is the 2021 model, the same as the bike tested just in a different colour. It's a good bike whether rigid or with a fork, though a 110/120mm would be nicer than the 100mm I used.

Scott Scale 930 has more progressive geometry that you can adjust and even though the HMF carbon frame is the cheapest Scott carbon frame it's great quality. Similar frame weight to the On One though and the Whippet gets a better fork at a much lower price. If you went for the previous 2022 Scale 930 you're getting the same quality frame with geometry that's still more progressive than the Whippet and Shimano XT kit and lighter wheels so that's a much closer match.

Great review, been looking at the bike this morning as On One have a 20% off everything sale. Was interested until I saw that they had increased the prices from what they were before the sale had begun, effectively offsetting this "sale". Very poor from them.

TBH that's why I rarely quote prices on anything, but PX are a particularly, err, roller coaster version of retail. They'll probably drop them again at some point so just keep your eyes peeled.

@@ianmoore3785 Yeah I ran it with Hunt Gravel Race 40s which are horribly stiff on most bikes but just gave the Rujo some extra pep and sharpness and saved a ton of weight. I'd probably go for something lower and less stiff to really get the best from it through, JRA build some great wheels in York if you're after something different to the generic options. I also stuck it on some 650B alloys with WTB mud tyres for swamping and that was a fun set up too.

@@ianmoore3785 Tell Jon at JRA I sent you and have a good chat with him about what sort of performance you want. He's an exceptional builder who sources some really interesting hub options and his own carbon rims and he was a regular 'giant killer' when I used to do big wheel tests for the magazines.
