First - I think your mother’s hen burning biscuits book is called The Little Red Hen. Now - I’m an 8th grade English teacher, I’ve also taught 11th grade, and I’ve always read aloud to them. They love it. In college, a group of friends and I started reading the Narnia books to each other out loud on Sunday evenings in the community center. Other people started gathering around to listen and it “accidentally” became a thing. We spent every Sunday evening of our sophomore year reading through those books out loud to large groups of people. Everyone loves a good read aloud.

I love that so much! I definitely want to bring back readalouds next year in my class (I worry that these days there's an extra fear around readalouds in Spanish class, with the extra comprehension piece). But yes, there is an extra sense of comfort in them, no matter the age.

I loved this! It brought back so many memories of reading aloud with my parents. Little House on the Prairie, Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, Narnia, Enid Blyton so many good ones! Loved hearing about how much we had in common as kids 😊

What a wonderful, cozy video! 📚 I didn't grow-up reading (for fun) and I wasn't read to as a child. However, I have two boys (grown now) and I did read to them. My youngest was in the first grade when the first Harry Potter book was released, so that was a very big deal at the time. I remember the first book had a midnight release which of course, we *had* to go to! Ok, I won't keep babbling. 😆 Thank you so much for sharing and please say thank you to your mom. ❤

What great memories and stories from both you and your lovely mother, Heather! Unfortunately, I wasn't read to as a child (or I don't remember it). This was just lovely. Thank you so much for sharing!

Thanks so much for sharing with us. Being read to as an adult (by a real person or an audiobook narrator) also counts.

Ohhh how I loved reading to my girls and when my eldest was old enough, she got her little sister in her bed and read to her. Richard Scarry was a favorite along with The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton and of course, Goodnight Moon. Such precious memories. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for sharing your story ladies! I too have grand memories of visiting the library with my mom and grandmother (never together) and not only choosing wonderful books but also reading together often. Your video made me smile remembering afternoons with my grandmother making our way through Nancy Drew, the raggedy Anne series and many many others. I in turn spent hours reading to my nephew we are close in age) his favorites were The Stupids by James Marshall and this horribly boring book called the tiny seed that admittedly I did hide so I wouldn’t have to read it.. such great memories! Thanks again!

We've all got those books that we'd rather not read, but they do make for amusing stories later.

What a wonderful video 😊. Being read aloud to by my grandmothers, aunts, and mother are some of my top childhood memories. My children are now 11, 9, and 8 and we hope to keep reading aloud with each other for the years that we live under the same roof. We’re going on a long road trip this summer and plan to listen to the 4th Harry Potter book. Thank you for the lovely chat with you and your mother. ❤

I read to my kids into their twenties. They would come for a visit and we would read in the car. Read all the HP books aloud twice since my boys are six years apart. Now reading to the grandkids! Loved this video.

I don't remember which Harry Potter it was but I remember one morning on my way to work on the bus I was reading my book, the person beside me and one person sitting behind me were reading over my shoulder. We'd make sure all of us had finished the page before turning, it was a pretty special moment.

That's amazing! When I was little we had other plane passengers listening to our Paddington readaloud, too. I love spontaneous reading moments.

Great video Heather. I come from an academic minded family too. My parents thought reading was very important and read aloud to my brother and I. You also made me think about how families priorities have changed with the social media generation.

It's definitely still out there among some families, but yes, those jokes in Matilda the Musical about reading books definitely landed differently last week than they might have even 10 years ago.

I did this with my children from the very beginning. And now reading with my little grandchildren. They are both insatiable in terms of how long they want to listen to a story. We definitely get tired of reading before they get tired of listening.😂 They’re 2 and almost 5.

Hi Heather, the big, red book that is part of a series sounds so interesting... usually i really like books that combine poems, portions of stories, anecdotes etc. but i doubt i could ever find it. Anyways, All the best!

The series was called The Children's Hour. There could be used copies for sale online.
