Hello Everyone :)
My apologies once again for how long it's been since my last video - it's been tricky to make videos, both logistically and from a motivation perspective as we've been in lockdown since August here in Melbourne.
Anyway, today's video is an on-set look at a fashion photoshoot I did for an Australian Department Store, Myer. I take you through my main setup which used just one light (a secondary light was only used a couple of times for some shots) and how I achieved the final shots.
I hope you all enjoy!
Dan

Never a dull moment. My fav shots are at 3:24 and 6:44. Those hats really add so much character to the model, but then again the model has her own personality. Regardless, I love the work.

Just found your channel and your work / explanations are great! Keep going :) I also had a question: why do you choose to use the 15-35 over something like a 24-70? Was it just to make the model look longer or did you have to get closer to her for a reason?
@dancastano
@dancastano 2 года назад
Hi :) I often switch between those two lenses, but sometime the wider angle can give you a really editorial look, by slightly (I stress this, slightly) distorting the model. I often just experiment with both lenses to see what sort of interesting look I can get by zooming in or zooming all the way out too.

Hello from India, your videos are really insightful will definitely use the lighting techniques you have suggested :) If you had to just pick one lens for such shoots which one would be and why?
@dancastano
@dancastano 2 года назад
Thanks so glad you enjoy the videos. The one lens that I'd choose would definitely be the canon 24-70 f2.8. It's the best multi-purpose lens, super sharp and great for almost all situations!

Thx for great video... can you discuss why you chose f11, iso 160
@dancastano
@dancastano 2 года назад
I chose F11 as I wanted to make sure everything is in focus, and ISO 160 as I'm using a flash quite close to the model which is the key light, meaning I don't need to have my ISO all that high

Hi Danielle! I was wondering if there's any way to shoot white background e-comerce shots that don't require cutting/editing the background in post production without using a plexiglass/reflective white material on the floor for the model to stand on. Cheers from Colombia
@dancastano
@dancastano 2 года назад
Hi Esteban :) Do you mean so the background is pure white? If so then I would light the background as well as the model. There's lots of different ways to do this depending how much room you have. You could use a v flat to face the light into so the bounce hits the wall, or you could just direct the lights straight at the wall. It really just depends on the size of the area/wall you want to light. I hope that helps :)

Hey Danielle, this shoot was wicked. I’ve shot with Profoto once would you say that’s the best route for lighting?
@dancastano
@dancastano 2 года назад
I really love Profoto mainly for the simplicity and ease of use with their products. They’re high quality lighting products, not cheap unfortunately, but investment pieces. But, whatever lighting you can get is better than nothing, especially when you’re starting out. I’d recommend hiring some Profoto lights first and see how you find them.

What are the stands you're using to hold up the form board?
@dancastano
@dancastano 2 года назад
These are metal stands that are actually pretty hard to come by. Here in Melbourne, they're stocked at Borges Imaging - borge.com.au/50mm-polyboard-holder-unpainted-raw-steel

The mirrorless is great, but the 5d Mk4 is an amazing camera too, and plenty of professional photographers still use this camera now. It's more than capable for ecom

Guys!! Im new at this so, I wondering if we give the client all the photos? or they choose some of them?
@dancastano
@dancastano 2 года назад
Hi Yocelyn, it depends on what your agreement was with the client before the shoot. When I'm negotiating a job, I include how many shots they will receive so everyone knows well ahead o fthe shoot what the final deliverables are. It can also vary between types of shoots, for example a campaign photoshoot may only require 8-10 final retouched images, whereas a social media led shoot might need 20-30 images without intensive retouching.

I'm so confused... I bought the light modifier, I did the setup.... did not turn out so crisp and contrasty like this. My shadows were soft, no definition, super flat... why??
@dancastano
@dancastano Год назад
Hey so glad you tried the setup out. A couple of things I could think of maybe as options (without being there of course) First, how far was your model from the wall, and how far was your light form the model? Secondly, did you use a diffuser, because that will always soften your light. I think it probably comes down to the first point though, the distances. The closer your light is to the model the more the light will wrap around them and soften off as it's a large light source. Keeping the light a bit further back makes the light source smaller relative to the model and the shadows become harder. I hope that helps? I always suggest having a play when you do a setup, and move your set/lights/models around until you find where your problem is.
@alannaiscoolio
@alannaiscoolio Год назад
@@dancastano Thank you for this response! You know - the distance suggestion really might be it. Will be trying this again because I really love how you did it!

How do you get the outfits for test shoots?
@dancastano
@dancastano 6 месяцев назад
This wasn't a test shoot, it was a commercial shoot for a client. But usually with tests, it's good to develop relationships with small brands and stylists. I recommend asking to loan the clothing from small brands in exchange for the imagery they can then use on their socials

@@dancastano Would you recommend any bounce boards to create shadows or would it be okay to create your own black bounce boards?
@dancastano
@dancastano 2 года назад
@@msreid Any type of large matte surface in black for negative fill, will help with shadows. If you don't have polyboards, even a 5-colour reflector using the black side would work :)
