Celebrating the incredible character actor, Michael Robbins, who played Arthur, Olive's husband and Stan's brother-in-law in the TV series and the three classic On the Buses films. We hear from Reg Varney, Stephen Lewis, Anna Karen, production supervisor Roy Skeggs, Hammer Runners Brian Reynolds and Phil Campbell, On the Buses Fan Club organiser Steve Luxton and film historian Morris Bright MBE.
These interviews are part of our recent feature length documentary On the Buses at the Movies that celebrates the 50th anniversaries of the classic British comedy film series, On the Buses, Mutiny on the Buses and Holiday On the Buses. The documentary goes behind the scenes, looks at the making of the films and reflects on the their enduring appeal.
Special thanks to Morris Bright MBE for allowing us access to his archive interviews with Anna, Reg, Stephen, Roy and the two Ronnies that were recorded in 2002.
Hope you enjoy it.

RIP Anna Karen on all the 2's (22/2/22) She had a slight memory loss in thiis though by saying she "doesnt know how Olive and Arther met maybe at one of her jobs or something" In an episode (cant remember which one) there are flashbacks to 10 years earlier when Jack had his first day (blakey was a driver away to be an inspector, stan was HIS clippy and moving up to driver, so jack came in as conductor, anyway i digress Arthur came to look at a room as a lodger the same time as stan had offered it to Jack, thats how they met, Arthur was lodging in the household :) I also found it funny that the guy from the on the buses fan club speaking on this was called Steve Luxton (when the show was about the Luxton Bus Company) :D

Michael Robbins' performance is the most believable - buttoned up - sharp delivery - the show has dated - more of a time capsule now - it would have been interesting to have given Arthur and Olive a show of their own - sadly it was never to be - Stephen Lewis as Inspector Blake stepped right out of Dicken's Novel - I mean that - a school teacher or Jailor?

The beauty of these very funny old comedies is that new generations find them - I'm 43 and born post on the buses but in my adult years I discovered it and loved it and bought the boxset, the older comedies are the ones that give you the belly laughs. And many of us in long term relationships probably see the Arthur and Olive in ourselves 😁 Blakey is crazy different in real life to his character!

in the 80's I used to hang out in a wine bar not far from the BBC studios on Whiteladies Road in Bristol. I was with a bunch of loons at the other end of the bar "said loons were a local barrister with an excellent sense of humour, a local sales manager for the same company that I worked for as their accountant and another wiry chap who came in dressed in his work clothes who was a builder basically. We recognised Michael immediately because either he had come from the studios still dressed "in character" or it just happened that was how he dressed as himself! The sales manager couldn't resist making an appalling cliche by saying "Fares Please" - that was just his way of joshing because really we wanted him to come and join us as we were a very gregarious bunch and didn't want him to feel lonely. Sadly he didn't utter a word but just stood there quietly drinking and I remember being surprised because i kind of assumed ALL actors were quite extrovert on the whole but I guess the "fares please" remark perhaps made him think we were just a bunch of boisterous oiks who had no kind intentions.
