Following on from my previous 'Part One' upload of 6990 this video features the crew Alan & Dan at work throughout this round trip from Loughborough to Leicester North & return plus the 'dirty work' on return to shed.
(Note: My apologies for wrong spelling of 'Witherslack' in the title sequence...... Someone will notice!!)
The majority of this footage prior to disposal duties was filmed on the 13.15 departure from Loughborough on Wednesday 23rd August 2017 by kind permission & fully authorised by GCR to whom I express my grateful appreciation.
Special thanks to Alan & Dan for accomodating me in their 'office' ...... Shame we couldn't get the 'air-con' to work lol.

thanks great video. I got to drive this engine on an experience day it was a Christmas present. One of the best days I've ever had. Couldn't wipe the smile off my face for long time. Boy hood dream come true. Thanks GCR you run a truly superb railway.

Thank you very much for posting this video. I really enjoyed it. there is something serene about a loco crew calmly about their business. Whilst I am a Crewe boy and insanely proud of my LNWR/LMS railway heritage, it has to be said that the GWR Hall class of locomotive was a very fine design indeed. The video really displays its' no nonsense ability and ease of acceleration. Of course the seasoned crew made it look easy. No wonder Mr. Stanier took the design, improved upon it and made the highly successful "Stanier Black Five" IMHO The Hall is a "prettier" engine, though every bit as purposeful. Finally, the video was excellently filmed and it presented very well on my large monitor screen with full sound. It gave the impression of actually being there!

My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the positive comment. I'm inclined to agree with you and as a former Midland Region fireman I actually fired both and the 5MT wins it for me. Stanier was kinder to us as he included a raised shovelling plate and firehole so less back breaking than GWR types. Regards, Brian.

Oh yes Bob, got to crankup the volume, shame you couldn't feel the vibration too lol. Although fortunate to have had a number of footplate trips (all on my channel) this was the first time on a Hall since 1966 although a Collett Tender rather than the Hawksworth would have been better for filming I'm not complaining. Brilliant footplate camera work. Just as I remember it as fireman at Neath GWR shed 60 years ago. Firing was harder more often with a full 16pound on the shovel with 10 coaches on.

Obviously I've redeemed myself by leading you to the main video of the two. I fired a few Halls & Granges myself between Brum & Gloucester but give me a Black 5 anyday. The raised tender plate and firehole door was less backbreaking!! Thanks for the compliment, glad you enjoyed it, Brian.

@@SYKAROST Yes, I agree with you, my most pleasurable days was when I fired the new, at the time, BR 76xxx engines. Controls all to hand, nice seat and the only time I stood up was to coal fire, and then not often.

Brilliant Brian. One of your best showing the superb driver/fireman teamwork. I particularly enjoyed listening to the exhaust as the Hall responded to regulator and reverser adjustments. Does Driver Alan also work on the Glos/Warwks? Best wishes Alan.

Wonderful to see the action in the cab. Historical preservation aside, I wonder what a steam loco cab would look like with modern "glass cockpit" additions: digital display & controls, automatic engine management etc.

Thankyou, glad you enjoyed it, there are a few more of these in cab videos on my channel to enjoy. I hope we never see that sight as we need to retain something that's tech free although there is certain monitoring equipment on Loco's on the main lines but not required on heritage railways.

Awesome video! I have one question, though. At right about 13:00 he's spraying water all over the coal in the tender. Is that to minimize the coal dust? Anyhow cheers, excellent video!

Utterly fabulous! I could watch that all day. I'm really impressed by the quality of the camera work and sound. It's not easy to hand hold a movie camera on a rocking locomotive footplate but the film is very steady all the same. Also many footplate ride videos are ruined by wind noise wrecking the audio. Did you you a wind cheater such as a Rycote for this? Also what camera did you use? It seemed to handle the very high contrast between the inside of the cab an the scenery outside very well. Personally I would disagree with you about a point you made about a Black 5 being a better loco to work on. I've had the pleasure of firing both a Hall and a Black 5 (admittedly only in preservation) and I preferred the Hall. As a 'right hander', I really didn't like being squeezed up in the left hand side of the footplate with my Driver behind me! Also I never could get used to the raised firehole on the Black 5. One thing I did prefer about the Black 5 - the injector with automatic change over to live steam when the regulator is shut! Anyway, thanks for posting this fabulous film! Best Wishes.

Many thanks for your kind comment and I'm pleased that you found my efforts an enjoyable watch. No external mic was used for this video as can be easily damaged so I cover the onboard mic with 'muffler fur' on a Panasonic HCX920 which is an excellent all round camera. For a steady hold it's mounted on a hand held 'cradle' complete with a neck strap. I respect your own preference for the Hall's but I fired both on the main line in 60's as a 'Midland Man' so we had to dislike them on principle due to the rivalry between the former LMR & GWR..... lol. Although I will be promoting the fact soon, I will give you advance info as you enjoyed this video so much. Part of my footage will be seen in the documentary series 'Mega Shippers' on 'Quest' which starts on 12th july at 10pm. My footage is due to air on 30th August but could get changed without notice. Matt Seymour. Easy when you know how, a lovely engine to work on but all past their prime by mid 60's so like most needed some TLC to get the best results.

Haha.... sussed out!! Like Alan I was a BR(M) man but we fired whatever came along including Hall's & Granges plus ER B1's & V2's (We were at Saltley, B'ham). They were OK but preferred our own or the BR Std Classes. I guess it depends on if you were an enthusiast or worked on them what opinion you held but I certainly love to see & hear the WR loco's we are fortunate to still have, the bottom line is..... 'Steam Is Steam'!!

Certainly is and most sound amazing especially under load. My Dad was a GWR man in Shrewsbury so hence the connection. Steam is Steam couldn't agree more.

Did you ever fire one in anger? They were good at the job but a bit of a backbreaker like all GW loco's, give me a 'Black 5' anyday, a far nicer all rounder lol.

Can you tell me, what is the control just above the large middle lever(the regulator, I think)? It's circular, brass, and has lots of holes all around the middle. I see the driver turn it, and hear some kind of noise that sounded like brakes(but I saw what I believe is another brake control, the double handled lever on the right). Would you know what that is?

The handle you refer to is indeed the vacuum brake. The double handled device you refer to is the reversing gear which is seen being adjusted to vary the percentage of 'cut off' through the valve gear to the cylinders.

This was at own risk & supervised at the invitation of our Driver Alan because I know what I'm doing having done it many times back in the days of BR steam...... Many later locomotives were designed to give good vision running backwards. This one and many others you had to drive with head outside the cab. Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.

Oh man I would love to run one of these as my job,the problem is there is only a handful in the country and alot of people like me that want the job , I have 2 scenic steam locomotives operating in about a 60 mile radius of me i would love to "retire" and just do this everyday that's a dream right there!

Hi Gil costin here fired many halls in 1960s at Oxley moor sheds Wolverhampton my driver was Kenny Law Cheers.Live in Eastbourne now.

Some are paid staff but not a question I've ever asked.. many are volunteers who do it for pleasure and are not frightened of hard work lol.

@@bobharrison2002 GWR locos were always driven from the right of the cab when looking forward. They had to do things differently to everyone else! Maybe you weren't aware of this. Incidentally RH drive is not a great idea. It makes sighting of signals and judgement of platform position more difficult. To some extent the GWR was designed around this but if they ventured onto other regions, the fireman had to lend more of a hand with this aspect and he was also employed more in these roles on the GWR too.

By invitation and not available to everyone who would like one. I don't go merely for the ride but hope to promote this excellent railway through my videos.The alternative for most people is to invest money into the GCR (or indeed any Heritage Railway) & book a 'Driver Experience' day which are very rewarding (yes, I've done that too lol) & make the ideal gift too. www.gcrailway.co.uk/special-services/steam-train-packages/
