It's hard to believe that I'm walking the streets of Kandahar in Afghanistan. Not what I really expected.

The meeting/interview with the Talibans didn’t sound like the comfortable part, but I guess that’s a normal protocol especially when tourists come and you don’t know their intentions. I love seeing these normal people and what they share! Really cool story! 🔔

The country has just come out of five decades of invasions and conflicts . I believe it is normal to be more vigilant and have many check-points. However, the visitors are always being welcomed and treated with a lot of respect.

I feel it's necessary to chime in on this particular video. The hat that you wore is called a Topi. It's the signature hat for the Pashtun people. Most of the Pashtun's are located in the southern provinces including Kandahar. You can pretty much spot MOST Pashtun people just from them wearing that hat. The Taliban's signature headwear can be a Topi BUT the REAL HARDCORE fighters/believers wear the BLACK cloth turbin that wraps about their head and it's tail falls down past their shoulders. If you're every walking around in Afghanistan and see someone wearing that type of headwear - be more aware that there is a high likelihood they are part of the Taliban. As you see more you'll get good at spotting them. As a side note - Only Pashtun people can become Taliban fighters from what i understand. If you are Tajik, Uzbek and Hazara decent then you can't be part of that organization. Kandahar is the birthplace and home of the Taliban. That's why it's the most conservative area of all Afghanistan. After 1989, when the Mujihadeen kicked out the Soviets - they fought among themselves due to the power vacuum. It was the Taliban out of Kandahar that rose up and took control of this chaos to bring peace and calm to the country. That is why so many locals love and support them. And now in 2023, they are still doing that after the US expulsion. You don't have to like what they stand for but you really need to RESPECT them for caring about their country and fighting off (3, the British, Soviet and US) foreign occupiers. Lastly, i was dieing to know how you got that interview with the Taliban in Kandahar. You didn't mention how they reach out to you? Did they talk to your fixer first? A more detailed explaination on how that whole episode happened would have been much appreciated.
@AleSalvino
@AleSalvino 9 месяцев назад
Oh wow, thank you so much for sharing all these details and adding more context! On the interview with them, they approached the fixer first, they knew a small group was coming so they wanted to check in and understand more about our intentions, plans, how things are going so far etc. It felt more like a protocol to understand more about people who are visiting (non-locals). In Kabul this obviously didn't happen, only in Kandahar for the reasons you already described (such an important place for them, etc.). I had no issues during that meeting but I must confess I was a bit nervous at the beginning as I didn't know what to expect. But overall it all went fine and I'm now working on the next episode! 🙏🏼

There are thousands of Talibs who belong to Tajik,Uzbek and many other ethnicities of Afghanistan. Every Afghan citizen or possibly even a Muslim from any part of the world can join Taliban. I know this because I am an Afghan myself.

Way to alienate Pashtun culture and Pashtun people. The turban is part of Pashtun culture. Pashtuns have been wearing these turbans way before the birth of the Taliban. Wearing these Turbabs doesn't signify any sort of connection with the organization, regardless of what color these are, it simply means that Pashtuns love their culture and are proud of proving their love for their culture to the world. Also, one point you missed is the Taliban were part of the Mujahideen. They rebelled because of the m$$cre of native Pashtun tribes that was carried out by the group (especially by the no-Pashtun members) in the North. Even today, many Oersian people in the North believe that the North belongs to Tajiks and that Pashtuns are settlers there. This whole claim that Pashtuns don't belong to the North is kind of ridiculous considering Padhtuns are ethnic Afghans- the Indigenous Eastern Iranian tribes of the region, whereas Tajiks are a blend of Persians that immigrated from Iran and the non-Persian Eastern Iranian peoples who gave up their languages and culture for political gains. If you want to tell the truth, go all the way and tell the whole truth.

Gracias, Ale! No sé...
