This was a really good movie. I usually stay away from 1940 - 1946 years because I don't like war movies. This was not a war movie (no hint of the war to come). However, it was a movie about people dealing with every day life in the midst of poverty. Very interesting from a socio-economic perspective. You rarely see this side of the "ruling class" from this perspective. Notwithstanding this interesting point-of-view, this was a good suspense in the Alfred Hitchcock way. "What would an every day regular person do in a not so every day moral dilemma?" No bells and whistles, yet emotional but not syrupy. A good one to watch. Enjoy. peace
An excellent film, a study of humans and how they react to life, it's trails and tribulations. Outstanding acting, nothing can beat the British films . Thank you for posting
Really great thank you for providing some quality acting and entertainment and for a change minus all the gizmos of today's offerings hopefully there are more such films and British out there and thank you RU-vid you did not cut into this one!
Very interesting film. Ralph Richardson was usually a "good guy" or a figure of moral authority. Quite unexpected to see him playing a villain, albeit a tragic one. Just shows that great actors can do anything.
Interesting that it was set in my nearest big city, Newcastle, but there were no Geordie accents to be heard. We could call it an early British film noir. One man makes a mistake and it sets in motion a chain of events which lead to the disastrous ending. Always interesting to see what pre WW2 Britain looked like. Glynis Johns is still alive aged 99.
@ garrison of the north other films set in Newcastle Payroll, The clouded yellow, Get carter , Stormy Monday And now this new breed of criminal movie I keep seeing trailers for
I don't like many pre-war movies but this one was really good. It was interesting seeing how people of a small town people interact. I tend to prefer the British film noir movies. Spoiler alert 41 minutes. "Well robbery wasn't the motive this time." He should have grabbed a bunch of cash to make sure they thought robbery was the motive.
Very good movie. Well-made products and good quality are timeless. Yes, terrible things can happen to good people, and nobody is immune to that. One mistake... and your life will change forever. Pointing fingers is one of the worst features of those who love to do it. Kobling could have been innocent, and still, the outcome would have been the same. Thank you very much for this interesting drama.
1939 movie, Kobling a German name, a scene like Kristalnacht. Am I reading too much into this movie? Richardson has become my favorite English actor, even my favorite Englishman. He could have played a fine Dobbin in Vanity Fair.
On the Night of the Fire (1939 ) A barber gives in to temptation and commits a theft, stealing some money from another shopkeeper, which leads to his involvement in blackmail and murder.
General Film Distributors (GFD) was later known as J. Arthur Rank Film Distributors. (I've virtually never seen a film that was preceded by the gong that I didn't end up loving.)
@@allenfitzpatrickactor Thank you for the Intel my friend. Now it makes sense . For a minute I thought I was have the Mandela effect hahaha. And I agree , Rank organization was a symbol of prestige and like hammer never disappointed.

I THINK I HAVE SEEN THIS ONE BEFORE----WILL CONTINUE, AT LEAST, UNTIL I AM SURE, I LIKE SIR RALPH RICHARDSON, I DON'T RECOGNIZE THE ACTRESS WHO PLAYED HIS WIFE---YET.
Can't for the life of me remember the leading actress or the name of the woman playing the actress? Can anyone help me out? Lovely movie. Thank you so much for airing it.
