As part of our continuing series "On the Road," Steve Hartman meets Agnes Zhelesnik, America's oldest living teacher. Zhelesnik's husband didn't approve of her working, so she didn't start her career until the age of 81. Now closing in on her 100th birthday, she still has no plans to leave the classroom.

Agnes Zhelesnik, "Granny", passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2017, two days after her 103rd birthday. Her life and memory spreads far and wide. She touched so many people of all ages and will always be an inspiration. Agnes was so happy to spend time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren for many years. She loved teaching children to cook and sew and was always busy crocheting. Her outlook on life was to always be happy and she did that even when times were tough.

she was my cooking teacher back when I was in preschool. I don’t remember much, now that I’m a senior in high school, but she made me love school. I remember making gingerbread man cookies before Christmas break, and making cookies. When i got the news of her passing, a small part of me died. I still have a binder with many pictures of my preschool, and she is in it.
