Surrounded by four of America's Great Lakes, Michigan has more freshwater shoreline than any other state. Each of its shores has its own unique landscape, from forests, to beaches, to giant walls of sand.

@indigodragon0613

Kerath Superior and Michigan can have waves of around 15ft for Michigan and recorded waves of over 25ft in superior. Reports of rogue waves in superior of over 30ft have been told by ship captains. The frequency of waves in all the Great Lakes is actually far more dangerous than in the ocean. Indeed, some ocean vessels would sink rather quickly in the Great Lakes due to them being made for a different wave pattern.

@@Nyowayro I'm not sure what that has to do with the subject. I rarely eat the fish I catch here due to mercury, PFAS, etc. Our society continues to ruin our waters. Sleeping bear dunes is one of the best stories by the Michigan Idianians and my favorite of all the stories as it tells of a mother bear who with her 2 cubs tried to swim away from a forest fire but the 2 cubs drowned and the mother bear would wait until her cubs returned. The Great Spirit was so impressed by the Mother Bear that he made her the Sleeping Bear that would over look the North and South Manitou islands Which are the 2 cubs and the islands are where they drowned. Now there are many tellings of this story but they all tell of a mother who would wait for her children till the end of time.

In Summer esprcially, the water is much warmer, the waves are much bigger, and the beaches are much wider on the Michigan side than the Wisconsin side. And the dunes laying along the coast make it it hard to believe this is all located in so called "fly over" country. Sshhhhhhh.....dont tell anyone LOL

Sorry, buy paleo indians were here before the glaciers were completely melted. Evidence shows they followed the glaciers as they retreated into the bay. They chose the area because the glacier in the Saginaw Bay was over a mile high and shielded them from the harsh northeastern winds in the winter and when the warmer westerly winds came, they were tempered by the water to the west. This is also the reason that this area is one of the only places on earth to have indigenous pines _and_ deciduous trees in the same location. There are lots of places that have both, but those places don't have truly _indigenous_ mixes. The west coast only had indigenous pines and the east only indigenous deciduous trees. Now both of those places have _native_ species of pine and deciduous.

More than 21% of the world's freshwater is found in the 4,530 miles of coastline that make up the Great Lakes freshwater system. More than 40 million people in the United States and Canada depend on them as a valuable source of drinking water because they are so large they can be seen from the moon. Additionally, the Great Lakes offer a wealth of recreational opportunities and stunning scenery.

So I finally broke down and decided to pay the $2.00 for the Full Michigan Episode. They should have called it Aerial Detroit. Not once did they even mention Grand Rapids, Pictured Rocks, or the Porcupine Mountains to name a few. Heck, besides Sault Ste Marie they really didn't even mention anything in the UP. Visually, this episode could have been fantastic if they would have included more of Michigan's natural wonders. I guess they didn't care to spend the money on a helicopter flight west of St. Ignace. I understand the importance of Detroit and the way it has shaped Michigan's history, but it irritates me to see so much focus on a city most people already know about. (Auto Industry, UAW, Auto Industry, Race Riots, Auto Industry, Motown, Urban Decay, Auto Industry) Don't waste your time buying this episode. Here's the summary: Detroit, UofM, Detroit, Lansing, Battle Creek, Sleeping Bear, Wine Vineyards, Mac Bridge, Sault Ste Marie, Detroit.

Not giving the UP more than a cursory mention or two is downright criminal. Lake Of The Clouds, the Keeweenaw area, Tahquamenon Falls, & so much more worthy of attention.

Hmm. Very thin on geology, considering that the central topic is THE MOST NOTEWORTHY feature of geological formation in the area. How did it form? What other similar formations exist elsewhere on the planet, for comparison? What evidence supports this conclusion? Who were the people who identified this formation process? Could we expect to see similar formations on other planets, and why? What are the conditions of formation?
