On this episode we let the 'cat out of the bag' on an excellent little In-House Meca-Quartz Chronograph from Seiko's JDM Spirit line. The SBTR027 (can be purchased for $184 in the link below) is one of those references you look back on and wish you purchased while it was cheap and readily available, so of course I wanted to make sure you all had a chance to snatch one up before they all disappear. This wristwatch keys directly into what so many of us love about Seiko, an affordable and wearable package, finished well above its competition from within their price point. i bought this after watching this video and I'm so glad I came across it. A lot of micros using mechaquartz to make homages so its nice to get one from a brand with real heritage and the sports design cues everyone is so into

I have the blue one but the bezel is reflective, not black. I love it. Wear it often because it is so beautiful and sporty but still elegant.

I just got one of those. It's definetely blueish grey. Under the sun light it's grey, but under low light conditions more like icey blue. A friend of mine, also a watch collector thought this was a U$ 500 watch! Just Beautiful.

Very nice ... totally blue on my iPad. It definitely has a Daytona vibe to it. I am tempted because I am a Seiko fanboy, but there are mecha-quartz options that offer much more for less (Parnis, Pagani Design). If I do decide to jump, I will purchase from your link. Thanks for your review.

I stumbled on this watch on the Sakura website looking for a Seiko chrono with a grey-ish dial under 42mm. It ticked all the boxes and the blue hue struck me as an interesting extra that would make the whole picture even more interesting. So I looked on YT for some moving footage and found your review. I am ordering one tomorrow for about $160 including 20% import taxes. I'm still trying to decide between a black leather strap and a Staib melanese mesh bracelet (which is slightly more expensive than the watch.....🙄 But darnn, sooo beautiful...). For me this is the correct price for a Seiko, when the start going double, triple the price your getting the exact same quality just with a cheap auto movement far less sophisticated than this or a watch in the current trendy style that everyone seems to like and Seiko just mark up the price. Every time I have thought about a Turtle I’ve gone and handled it and could not buy as it feels and is the same quality as their watches in this price range. Oh, and I love the brand enough to own a Grand Seiko so I’m no Seiko hater, I just think so many of the standard models Between $450-$1500 have the same build quality as this!

Great looking piece, and it totally looks blue-gray on my monitor. I'm looking more at these mecaquartz calibers lately, I just wish I knew more about how they differ from each other. You said this one is an 8T. I've seen a lot of VKs out there, but never an 8T and I'm curious now what the difference is. As a motorsport fan, I had been looking at the Yema chrono, but I think the battle has been joined for my first mecaquartz purchase now. Great find!

(I know this is a year old comment but commenting just incase somebody else is looking for the answer.) The 8T is pretty much the VK when used in Seiko-branded watches. Basically, they rebranded the 8T as the VK to sell to other watch manufacturers. They already have the design and the tooling, so why not sell the movements for extra profit?

It is pretty. I just find it amazing that the Pagani design “Daytona” with ceramic, sapphire, screw pin “easy link” Rolex style bracelet, and this very same movement was only $55 (with some discounts). Ahhh the crazy watch world:)

Thanks for the video. Just picked one up. Looks very nice. I wasn't sure if it would be too big or too heavy for my wrist but it was fine. My only quibble is that the date is a bit difficult to read because it is at an angle, it is inset fairly deep, and the font they use is a bit small. I wish they would make this solar powered and use a titanium case and bracelet, as I would be prepared to pay a little more for such a watch.

any idea where to source a replacement bezel insert (or, bezel and insert combo) for the tachy? I would love to add a 12H GMT or City Time bezel, or even a fully indexed diver bezel. Just have no use for the tachy, but would use other options. thanks for any input.

@@AverageBros that's exactly right. It is this weird marketing garbage Seiko does. They can offer that watch for that price, but they could get $100 more, at least, with sapphire. I guess most consumers don't care or know enough to care. That is the target group.

Every brand has tiers and levels, to not cannibalize sales across other lines. This isn't some microbrand's halo model, denoting the absolute pinnacle of value you can get for trying out thier brand. This is a cheap fun entry level watch from one of the largest most established brands today.

Yes, it makes the sundials slightly asymmetrical but I believe this is to balance the date window on the right of the dial.

I recently picked one of these up. I absolutely love it, but has anyone else had an issue with slightly wiggly chrono pushers? After a week of use, the pushers on my watch move from side to side slightly, and I can hear the rubber gaskets squeaking against the metal when they shift around like this. It isn't that severe--they're not that loose, and it doesn't interfere with functionality. But it just feels a little crappy, and I worry about compromised water resistance. Is this normal, or should I send it back for another copy?

Hard to justify twice the price for the same movement just because it says Seiko, especially with Seiko's problem with no sapphire. And then you add a Parnis bracelet? Thanks though.
