Hey Everyone!
So today's video is the first in a while, since I broke my foot in late October, so I'm very excited to bring you all a new video on the Genset, which today is focused on the electric choke, and insuring that it starts up every time on the first try. I hope you all enjoy, and as always, leave any questions, or concerns in the comment box below, and I will be happy to answer!
*****CORRECTIONS*****
-When I was talking about the tally marks on the casing corresponding to 5 degrees in temperature, I did not mean 5 degrees OF temperature. The Onan official manual has a chart which shows you how many degrees to rotate your electric choke based on the standard ambient temperature. Once you have your number degrees that you need to rotate it clockwise from that chart, you can then transfer that number to the casing, remembering that each mark represents 5 degrees RADIALLY. That was a mistake in wording that I failed to mention.
- Also I am aware that my choke ended up backing off to 5 tick marks past reference point, which happens to end up being around 74° Fahrenheit which was the temperature that day when I filmed it funny enough! Just make sure to hold it in place when you are doing adjustments unlike what I did when I let go, and that should ensure that you get your adjustments prefect when working on your genset!

Just a Quick note since my wording was a bit confusing in the video, I also made a full note in the description of my video which anyone can check there. But essentially my wording on the Degree Marking system on the casing of the electric choke was wrong, and each mark represents 5° Radially for the reference point. So using the chart that Onan provides in their manual, you can adjust it to the exact amount of degrees RADIALLY that you need for your degrees TEMPERATURE wise. I know that can be a bit confusing, so I wanted to clear that up. I will put a link in this comment to an Onan Manual with the chart and instructions for the adjustments I made here; (chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/viewer.html?pdfurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.skilledcrafting.com%2Fonanfiles%2F965-0528%2520Onan%2520BGE%2520(spec%2520F-K)%2520NHE%2520(spec%2520E-K)%2520Genset%2520Service%2520manual%2520(09-1994)%2520965-1060%2520Supplement%2520(spec%2520M)%2520(11-1995).pdf&clen=5165462&chunk=true) (Choke info page on manual page 6-23 and 6-24 OR page 76 and page 77 of the PDF.)

This helped me immensely, I fixed up a bunch of issues with the Onan 6.5 generator in my boat, but couldn't figure out why it wouldn't start without me holding the throttle. Turns out the choke spring was installed BACKWARDS so it held the choke open when cold. Nice. This video helped me adjust the choke properly.

@@warriorcatsfan310 So far so good. Onan makes a pretty bulletproof unit. At 30 years old, she still runs strong!

I’m glad my video helped you out! If you have any questions you can also ask them here as well and I will do my best to answer! And there can be plenty of gremlins on these things, they are always fun to track down, but I think I got all of mine on my Genset luckily haha!

This is how I fixed. In my case of ( I can't start my generator) it's has been two years since last time was running. I started by checking oil level, gasoline more than 1\4 tank in my RV, sparkplug checked for good spark, also cleaned the carburetor and even installed new one but same situation, check wires and found some has been damaged by rats so I replaced them, by this time it started but stay runing only by keep pushing the switch on all time, so I knew it was electrical problem from the engine itself, so I took the generator out from my RV to work in my garage. I disassemble the unit by removing the cover, then the cooling fan until I was at the engine brushes area and this is what I found: one more wire chewed by rats plus the stinky nest in the middle of the generator motor coil, I fixed the wire and sanded the cooper contacts where the brushes are sitting becouse they were real duty with old urine from the rats. I assembled everything back together and bingo it's runing like a champion, for this project materials involved was about $60.00 including an aftermarket new carburetor and an harmonic balancer/steering wheel puller to pull the aluminum fan out. Just keep in mind that (Eny engine run smooth if gasoline and DC current aren't interrupted) Also if you have a onan microlite 4000 like mine, don't run it for more than a minute without the cover becouse you'll cook the engine real fast, also keep the eye on the aluminium fan and your fingers after cranking it in case you missing one, just kidding!!! If this can help eaven one person it'll make me more happy, thanks for reading!!!

Sounds like you had a challenge there, I'm glad you were able to overcome it! I've sadly put way more than $60 in my Genset, but I validate it by saying that its basically a new one, for 1/4 of the cost of a new one haha... but anyways, I'm sure your comment will help many people out who visit this video looking for assistance, so thank you for posting it! These gensets can be difficult to figure out, so its nice when the community comes together to help people fix up their gensets! I know I had a lot of help in fixing mine, so it was only fair to share it everyone else! I still have another video to post in the future, but I have to film it first, once I get my genset wired up and run new fuel lines in my RV for it. Then I get to fire it up for the first time on the main gas tank instead of an auxiliary one! After that thought, that will probably be it for my genset videos, and I will just watch out for comments from new people attempting to repair their own Onans! but Anyhow, thanks again for your comment, I hope you take care and have a good one!

I’m sorry my reply is only finding you just now, but I want to further dive into what ever issue you are having with your genset in your holiday rambler. I’m on my phone now, but tomorrow I will log into my computer, and get the link for my parts site and attach it to a more detailed comment on your genset. Anyhow, until then, take care and thanks for your comment, I’m glad you found my video informative! Thanks for watching, from FL!

Here is my Second reply; So first off, The website I used for my parts and my genset particularly (NHE, Spec: E) Website: www.partsfortechs.com/index.php?main_page=page&id=9 Secondly, your issue: For the no spark, I would check your coil and coil connections first, then your points to ensure they are functioning properly. if all of those check out fine, then you can take a look at your wires and plugs for damage. as for the no fuel, most likely fuel pump, you can unplug it and energize it separately to test it and see if it functions. If it is working, then ensure your fuel lines are clean, and the carb bowl and float are clean and functioning properly. ( Cleaning the carb no matter what isn't a bad idea, I would never recommend replacing the original Nikki carb with an aftermarket china one ). Now if you clean the fuel lines, carb, and fuel pump is good. Ensure that your RV has at least 1/4 or more in the gas tank, or else the genset wont pick up on fuel since the pickup only goes down to the 1/4 level to ensure the gas engine on the vehicle can still get somewhere to acquire more fuel. Anyhow, if you have any further questions, feel free to comment them here, and I will be a bit more watchful and hopefully find them faster than a month this time, thanks for watching, and take care!

I miss my Onan firing up. Any idea how to get a wiring diagram for one of these things? I have an Emerald 3 6500.
@warriorcatsfan310
@warriorcatsfan310 2 года назад
Yeah I have the online manual link for it which I will include at the end of this comment. But you will find the wiring diagrams for all Specs. Of the Onan Emerald III in there. It’s in the B appendix of the manual, or PDF page 150-156, is all of the diagrams. There are a few more, but those are the majority of the systems. If you don’t mind me asking, what has caused your Onan Emerald III to stop working, and why do you suspect the wiring is bad? If you don’t mind giving the back story to your genset, I am curious as to why your genset is not running. Anyhow, I wish you luck with it nonetheless! Okay what if the choke isn't moving on its own
@warriorcatsfan310
@warriorcatsfan310 Год назад
Sorry for the late reply! If the choke isn’t moving on it’s own from the beginning, once the Genset has started. Then the vacuum pull off for the choke is malfunctioning. The choke should essentially be closed during cold start, and then once the engine is running it should pull a manifold vacuum, and a little vacuum powered choke puller, should pull and hold the choke open at all times while it’s running. Now the purpose of the heated choke element you see in this video that I adjusted, is to hold the choke open, even if the Genset is off, while it is still hot. That way if you were to start it again, while the Genset is hot, it wouldn’t have the choke closed on it, and would start just fine and not be flooded. If you have any further questions, please feel free to leave them here, and I will try to be quicker on my response next time! So take care, and good luck on your Emerald Genset!

I also have to hold my choke open it runs all the time
@warriorcatsfan310
@warriorcatsfan310 Год назад
If you are holding it open all the time while it is running nag, and when you let go of it, it then closes and starves the engine of air, means that the vacuum pull off is not functioning, and should be examined for broken diaphragm, cracked vacuum hose, or missing linkage. If you have any further questions feel free to let me know!

I used to store it at a friends house who had extra space, but nowadays I keep it in a RV storage facility not too far from my home. I am in Central Florida, if that’s also what the question was about, nice and hot here!
