Self rotating piston, to keep it from wearing out on one side 😂 Well that’s one way to get the fan off 🤣 Well that’s a good job. That’s surprising no one made a video. Nice job 👍🏼

You did a great job with minimal tools and experience. Let us know how the assembly goes even if you don't video it. On YT James Condon does unending repairs on all kinds of generators. I don't know if he has ever done a Cummins one or not. I only think of diesel engines when I see Cummins so I learned something. Good luck and enjoy the RV and camping.

Thanks! The generator is currently all put back together with the new engine and mounted back in Roe's RV. We haven't had a chance to fire it up yet since we're just waiting on a new air filter to arrive. Then we'll fire it up and go through the break-in procedure.

You mentioned putting hardware back on so you can keep track. I prefer to set it aside because then when I'm done if anything is left I know I forgot something.
@FateUnbound
@FateUnbound 12 дней назад
That's fair and to each their own. But basically I know the same if while I'm reassembling I have a threaded hole without a bolt/screw in it I know I lost or forgot something. I like this method because it makes it nearly impossible to forget / lose hardware.

@@FateUnboundIt's not a Honda. Alot of the inner plastic is broken. The ignition coil went bad and you have to remove the engine from the housing to replace it.

Great video ! Our twin cylinder Onan 5500 lost an intermittent Ignition Coil while camping outside of the Grand Tetons before we had solar. We then went to a campground and I dropped the generator and replaced both of the coils. That issue made me want the 1200watts of solar we had Thomas install for us. Havnt used the generator much since haha

Wow, fantastic! Very inspiring, such patience! Included several key disassembly techniques that are useful for many situations like this. For re-assembly, would be interested in a couple of key techniques... specifically how to press the stator back on and of course, see it running with new engine. Thanks for sharing :)

Hey David bro, are you that bored? A simple metal floor or wooden, and just mount a portable generator inside ( which happens to be better) would have done the trick. But on with the show. Hi Roe and Sweetie, wherever you are. Oh and David, check out my man Tito video on this.

I have a small, 5 HP, portable generator in my back porch closet, that is seized. I have always wanted to do a full tear-down and cleanup, to see if it can be rescued. I haven't ever done anything with, because I haven't the foggiest where to start. Watching your video, has lit a match under my intentions with it. :)
@TMegelhoff

I'm sorry I'm not really that observant, but did you have your stabilizers down when you jacked the RV up to remove the generator? I was thinking that it could be a little risky and open the possibility for damage to the system.

Head and piston look fine. Any motor look like this after it run a lot. Need to pull the motor apart it my just be the rod. If the cylinder and the crank look good it should not cost a lot of money to fix. Also need to look at that head an see how that valve seat look. You ask how I know watch one of my videos. Had not watched whole video. Motor is trashed. You need to look at the cylinder wall close. It may be able to save case. If so see how much a crank rod and piston cost.

threw a rod well you were going to replace the engine but I think I would check on the whole new unit when the flywheel popped off you reminded me of tom hanks on money pit when his bathtub went through the floor

That was fascinating to watch. We recently ditched our 10k generator. We rarely needed it thanks to you getting us started on our solar journey (we are now at 4,780 watts of panels and 21kwh battery bank). I remember watching you install your solar system - you made it look so attainable that I spent the time learning - Thank you. btw we did pick up a small 3200 watt inverter generator for the handful of times each year there is just not enough sun, but it only weighs 50# vs the 500# we got rid of. Thank you for the time and clear instruction you give on these projects!
@williamboyer8861
@williamboyer8861 14 дней назад
lol why in the world would you need 4800 watts of solar panels and where do they fit? Do you have a 200 foot rv? 4 panels and 800 watts runs my 43 foot rv quite nicely...

@@williamboyer8861 honest answer “why not?” ;-) Details - 36’ 2000’ class A, full time in it for work and often see temps 110+ in summer, winter we are often under clouds and trees, but still harvest enough most of the time. AC was necessary (mini split) for summer temps and we converted everything to electric. Sometimes we also power our neighbors. It’s a blessing and David was responsible for me getting started :-)

Not the most cleverly designed setup, they should have done better. Great job tackling this job! Wow that's an expensive engine. i think I would have searched around at rv salvage yards. Or perhaps just replace it with a portable unit from Champion or Generac.
