I like merlot for cooking. I recommend buying the 4pk mini bottles. I don’t drink wine that often so if I open a big bottle it just goes to waste. Sutter home is perfectly fine for cooking. Good luck!

wine you can put in fridge and use it as cooking wine. It never goes bad if you use it that way. It is VERY good in beef/dark meat stews too.

Literally the only time I buy dry red wine is for cooking with. I like to buy the little 4 packs so I'm not wasting a whole bottle cause I won't drink it. Dry reds would be like Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, or Merlot. Those are the ones I have noticed usually come in the 4 packs. Pretty much any red wine is going to be dry unless it says sweet on it. Red Moscato or Roscato will be very sweet and delicious to drink! I typically buy Yellow Tail as its an affordable decent wine. Good luck, hope you enjoy your roast! 😊🤤

I prefer to keep my grocery list on my app because I keep my meal plan on it. However, one of the precautions, as I recently learned, is to avoid touching your phone at the grocery store. So perhaps a paper list is more sanitary at the store.

Just google pantry staples and you will get tons of lists. They have pantry lists that fit your type of diet (standard american, low carb, paleo, vegetarian, vegan, Mediterranean etc.) If you are on a budget you can get many of the basics at the dollar store, they have their own brand and they are good! Shop the store for as many of the basics on your list you can find and then proceed to an aldi's, grocery outlet or walmarts. It will keep your initial cost down and then you can purchase larger sized items one at a time each following week. Good luck!

Using GRAPE JUICE instead of wine is much tastier. I use red or white grape juice depending on the wine the recipe calls for. Add a splash of vinegar to the juice to make it emulate that "dry" aspect. Although, vinegar is not really necessary to get great results. I actually like it better because I don't like the taste of wine and you would never know a recipe was swapped with grape juice.
@elisendap.h.f.984
@elisendap.h.f.984 4 года назад
If you could taste wine after it was cooked you either used too much or it was something way too expensive to use on cooking! I don't drink any alcohol myself, but a very small glass of wine gives a lot of flavour to a lot of dishes.
@stephikarolyi8706
@stephikarolyi8706 4 года назад
@@elisendap.h.f.984 I thought so too when I'd try to cook with wine. I surely thought I was making a mistake somewhere but I just couldn't enjoy the taste of food with wine no matter how diligent I was about amount and quality. The grape juice swap ended up being a moment of serendipity when we were all out of white wine but had white grape juice my monkey brain thought, "Eh, close enough" and it worked! I don't drink wine and having a bottle collecting dust for an occasional recipe bothers me, personally. If I buy grape juice I can give it to my kids or enjoy it by itself. More bang for my buck and for me that's always a good thing.

Good dry red wine for cooking is a cabernet sauvignon. Cheap is fine. You're cooking with it. Your average six dollar a bottle screwtop (I mean, you can screw the top off without resorting to a corkscrew) wine from Costco is fine. Have the rest with some walnuts and cheese. Note: I've been watching your videos for about a month and a half, but this is the first time I've commented. Thanks, Christine!

A good rule of thumb is a good wine to cook with is a wine that is good to drink. But since you don't drink,I would suggest to go to the liquor store and ask what dry red wine would go good to cook with beef roast. They're usually pretty good at picking a good one.

Robert Mondovi Cabernet Sauvignon is a decent brand of wine to cook with and us affordable. We don’t really drink wine and I refuse to spend $15 or more on something we aren’t really going to use. Just a side note: if you don’t drink and the wine not used in cooking will go to waste, there are some alternatives that work well. Add a splash of red wine vinegar to pomegranate or cranberry juice to make up the amount of wine the recipe calls for. Or simply add more stock and a splash of red wine vinegar.
@HollyRamblesOn

For longevity, I would try a fortified wine like Marsala. Since you don't drink the wine, this kind of wine will keep much longer in the pantry. If you need white wine, try white dry vermouth. As someone else has mentioned, you can always get half size bottles of wine as well. Any dry wine usually works, just make sure it is not sweet. There would be a sweetness label on each wine in the store as a guide.

I’ve always heard, don’t cook with a wine you wouldn’t drink. So even if you’re not a big wine fan (I’m not), make sure it’s something at least decent. Even like a $10 wine would make a big difference over, say, cooking wine.

For red wine go for a cabernet sav, merlot, or malbec. Don't go for the cheapest wine, but you don't have to spend a ton on it. If you have lots left over and don't enjoy drinking it freeze in in cubes to add to dishes. It's great in tomato sauces, stews, etc.

I’ve noticed several folks have suggested cooking wine. It really is not a good idea. They usually use low quality wines. And it also usually has salt added. So if you do get it , then cut back on the salt in the recipe!!!! However, you can probably get an inexpensive, but well-known brand of red table wine which is a huge step up. Something like Gallo or Livingston Cellars - labeled ‘table red’ or ‘red blend’ for a reasonable price. Most reds are relatively dry. And a bottle with a screw cap is probably just fine and a good idea if you don’t have a opener for corked wine. I have to say the idea of a 4pk of individual bottles is a smart idea if you don’t expect to cook with wine often. An open bottle of wine will eventually turn to vinegar, so if you won’t finish it off in a month or so then certainly go with the 4pk!!!

Rule of thumb for wine to cook with is use one you like to drink. If you don't drink wine, leave it out. He posts the recipe the day before along with the substitution list on his facebook page.

I am definitely trying out that Creamy Cheddar Broccoli soup, thanks for sharing! I haven't seen the inside of a store for 4.5 weeks due to Smith's curbside pick up. However, my mom's 70th birthday is this Saturday and I am planning on making her dinner and a cake and taking it to her house to eat outside on her deck (social distancing ofc!) so I'll be braving it on Thursday. When I am cooking with wine I have the same issues, because I do not drink. I usually just buy the small 500ml cardboard type of containers that have a screw on cap, and Cabernet Sauvignon (sp?) is what I get for a dry red. Good luck at the store!

You have probably already bought it by now but as a rule of thumb for cooking with red wine, I always use Italian. For some reason, I have found it stands up very well to long, slow cooking and gives the dish a really nice full body taste. I have tried Californian, South African, Spanish, Portuguese, you name it and I always go back to an Italian merlot. Tenderizes and adds beautiful full flavour to even the cheapest roast.

I just went to the store. I've been going once a week. My area is so depressing. I live in Jersey in a very dense area. We have a Walmart, shop rire and stop n shop. Stop n shop is my favorite store. It hasnt been fully stocked since right before our lockdown so over a month now. The usual are gone like tp and paper towels, alcohol and hand sanitizer. Very little though of pasta, sauce, dish detergent, laundry detergent, canned veggies, mac n cheese, rice beans, romaine, bananas, cucumbers, the list goes on and on. It makes panic shop even if when I'm home I dont feel the need to panic shop. And the prices are so ridiculous now. I'm ready to take a drive out west to go food shopping where apparently the stores are better stocked. Good luck when you go. I'm interested to see what your stores have.

As I listen to her compile her list I think she has got to be the world's greatest optimist. I shopped 4 days ago and there were a LOT of things I was not able to get. I am very eager to see how many of the things on her list she is actually able to find. If she gets it all or even almost all of it, I probably need to try again because that will mean that in the last four days things have changed a lot in the stores. I do NOT think there is a genuine shortage of ANYTHING...not even toilet paper. I think there is just a serious case of hoarding. I saw a picture of a woman putting what looked like around a hundred rolls of toilet paper in her car; therefore, I was not surprised when I tried to order my usual amount from Amazon and was told there were ZERO rolls available. I think perhaps the word "stockpiling" became a dirty word when people saw the two guys who emptied the shelves in stores for miles around and even emptied Amazon of ALL their bottles of hand sanitizer hoping to resell them on Amazon and make a mint. Sadly (for them) Amazon saw what they had done and refused to allow them to sell on Amazon so they were stuck with SEVEN THOUSAND bottles of hand sanitizer! The state Attorney General I believe is pressing charges against them because they reportedly sold one bottle of sanitizer for $70 which is against the state's anti-price gouging laws. I too love lists. I find if I have a to-do list I am much more productive. There's just something about seeing it written down right there in front of you. (Maybe that's why God had Moses write the Ten Commandments on that tablet instead of just telling him what to tell the people.) But here's how strange I am. I have been known to be making out my to-do list and think of something I have already done and add it to the list just so I can check that it has been done. Now is that weird or what? BTW, to those who don't believe in God and object to my reference to God and Moses and the Ten Commandments I won't try to change your mind and I hope you won't try to change mine. I could be wrong and if I am, when I die I will never know the difference but for those who do not believe in God, if they are wrong, when they die, unfortunately they will know they were wrong.

If you don’t drink and don’t like the flavor of wine I suggest you substitute with beef broth. The flavor of the wine or any alcohol concentrates when cooking and it is always recommended to get something you enjoy the flavor of. I don’t drink and hate the flavor of wine. I tried to use it once and for me it overpowered the dish.

Two of my favorite things to keep in the pantry are (about 15 oz?) cans of Swanson chicken breast meat (which is found next to the canned tuna!), and cans of white potatoes, and they come as: whole, diced, or sliced. Also, having several cans of cream of chicken soup on hand helps so I don’t have to have cream on hand (to make creamy gravy’s) which, fresh cream eventually goes bad.

If you are not use to cooking with wine use a little less than the recipe calls for. Example if it calls for a cup use only a half cup. If you like the sauce next time add the full amount. Wine can over power a sauce real easily.

Dry red wine would be a cabernet sauvignon or merlot, zinfandel, or a red blend as examples. These are full-bodied, not sweet. You can find a decent bottle under ten bucks. Hogue Cellars is reasonably priced, maybe Chateau St. Michelle. There's probably some Idaho reds in your store you could try, too. Don't be afraid to ask the wine guy for a recommendation!

Laura in the Kichen Light Broccoli Soup is the best! I like it because it’s not overloaded with too much cream, but it’s super tasty. Of course I modify it a bit for our tastes. But I really recommend you try it.

I know you said you dont drink wine, but a general rule of thumb is dont cook with wine you wouldn't drink. So typically if it's labeled as "cooking wine" dont bother; get a bottle from the shelves of wine meant to be drank. Hope that's a good start!
@mollyk.4031

The rule for cooking with wine is if it's not good enough to drink, it's not good enough to cook with since cooking intensifies the flavor. So don't buy the cheapest (bottom shelf) and definitely do not buy "cooking wine". When cooking (or drinking) with red wine, I prefer Pinot Noir or Merlot. Sutter Home sells little 4 packs, each bottle is a bit over 6 ounces. They have twist off caps so you don't need to worry about opening with a corkscrew.

Since you're just cooking with the wine, I'd get cheapest. Also, the dry red wines are cabernet sauvignon, merlot, pinot noir and zinfandel! So, you can use any of those I think.

Actually get a moderate price wine. Quality does impact on the flavour when cooking. Learned that on the cooking shows on Food TV.

You should never cook with a wine you wouldn’t drink. It makes a big difference. You don’t have to do the most expensive but if it isn’t good enough to drink, do not cook with it either.

Rex-Goliath with the rooster on the label is a reliable brand. Winking Owl is really good for the price if you go to Aldi. Tempranillo and Malbec are both delicious varieties of red wine and bonus: you can combine the extra with fruit and a little juice for sangria if you don't think you'll cook with it again anytime soon. If you go with a local wine, avoid Syrah as it can have a powerful flavor and is better for drinking. Merlot or Cab would both be ok though.

the best bits about chard is the stem, i like to saute them with an onion and garlic in oil, then add white wine to soften and serve with parmesan cheese, no bitterness ;-)

Paper list for the time being for sure. In Canada there are toilet paper and yeast shortages everywhere. We have alot of the fresh fruits veggies (funny) but are limited in Dairy and meat items. Have a meal plan but be flexible and you'll do fine.

A Cabernet or Pinot Noir are going to be your drier easiest to find wines for cooking, they are both pretty even keeled and not sweet. But if you have some sweet notes running through your recipe a merlot may be nice. It is not as dry as the first to but the flavor profile would work nicely if your recipe already has some sweeter notes.

cabernet sauvignon is your best bet for pot roast, in my humble opinion; nice and dry to stand up to the richness of a roast. other common options tend to be a on the fruitier side, which isn't bad, but not my preference. you just gotta experiment now and again.

If you can get a clean skin that’s a few dollars a bottle and it’s just a “ dry red blend” that should be fine for cooking. I keep red bottles in the cupboard for a few months after opening. They should be fine as long as they’re fairly cool. If you find you like cooking with wine I would recommend upgrading to a cask which will be bigger but more economical and keeps far longer.

Cooking wine or a merlot should do the trick. Just stick with a medium type of price point from what you see there. Chances are good you’re not using the whole bottle so if there are smaller options I’d go that route. My younger sister is a big red wine fan (I’m a white wine gal myself) and she likes yellowtail (the brand) for her merlot and Cabernet choices

I agree with Behany Desjarlais. The small 4 pack mini bottles is the way to go since you don't drink wine. Normally I would say it should be something you like to drink. Cheap is ok but not too cheap!

We also don't drink wine, but we do cook with it! For dry red wines, either a Merlot or a Cabernet Sauvignon should work out great. No need to buy anything fancy, I've cooked with $10 bottles of wine many times and everything turns out just fine. If you ever have a recipe call for a dry WHITE wine, Sauvignon Blanc tends to cook down into the "cleanest" taste in dishes, in my experience. I do strongly recommend steering away from anything actually labeled as cooking wine. They're full of salt and low quality ingredients and taste horrible.

Broccoli cheese soup is easy. The Key is just a really good broth or stock. Since you make your own I'm sure you'll be golden. I personally just do, onion, garlic, broc, the veg stock from walmart (the cheap one) a few potatos, a little half and half and then whatever cheese I have on hand. Preferably tillamook white cheddar but colby jack is good too. Hand shredded is better so it doesn't have the starch on it but no big deal either way. When I make it I make a HUGE pot! lol

If its too peoplely when you go out, just grab the essentials and go back when it isnt so peoplely. From a loving supporter of your channel who was being socially distant for decades before she knew what it was called😂 Your shelf stable items you want it may be worth shopping online to see if you can get those shipped. I have notice they are stocking back online. I was even able to snag a pack of paper towels from walmart online yesterday. A Walmart app hack is search for your items on the Walmart app with your store selected and it will tell you if its in stock and what aisle. You can also scan your receipts and it will save for your purchase history and you can make a list from that and even the aisles on your paper list. Just dont leave the paper list at home like I do.

Professional chef here: merlot or a “red blend” will both be ideal for multiple types of recipe. I recommend getting half sized bottles of they are available or a pack of the mini bottles if you’re not planning on drinking it. If I’m buying a whole bottle for cooking I go for a $10 ish bottle. Doesn’t need to be expensive for cooking!
