Once Again, the Jamaican White Overproofs: Wray & Nephew, Charley's JB, Rum-Bar, Rum Fire

Given that I've already reviewed all four of these bottles before, you would think this video would have been easy. But no: between distributor issues and my citymates not caring about anything beyond bourbon and tequila it turns out that Chicago shelves are totally bereft of Jamaican overproofs as I write this (yes, even W&N) - meaning my plans, namely completing this series of Jamaican rum videos with a proper re-review, had to go by the board. It was even a nightmare just finding time to record this, a video which therefore amounts to a pure victory lap: you're seeing me here late at night after several days of taking care of a 14-month-old with an ear infection.
But all of that's okay - because these four rums are all stunningly good and very strong and extraordinarily special, and (most impressively) cheap. Wray & Nephew White Overproof is the first review I ever did ( • Wray & Nephew White Ov... ), long before I even thought this would be a channel, and it is the rock upon which the last 300-odd videos are built. Charley's J.B. Overproof, as previously reviewed by guest host Tom ( • Charley's J.B. Overpro... ), is much weirder and certainly much less polished, but no worse for all that. Rum-Bar White Overproof from Worthy Park (reviewed at • Worthy Park Rum Bar Wh... ) gets a step up via its exclusive use of pot distillate, and - pound for pound, all roles in mind - it might actually be the best of this bunch. But the winner for sheer all-out density and power is the monstrous high ester Rum Fire from Hampden Estate (reviewed at • Hampden Estate Rum Fir... ), possibly the best flavor-per-dollar ratio anywhere on the market.
I scored these 86+, 87-, 87 flat, and 88 back in their respective reviews, and I see no reason to change that - but at the same time, I could see any of these being anyone's favorite for a whole number of reasons. As the reigning kings of value in spirits these bottles have earned their victory lap and then some. The world owes Jamaica a debt of gratitude not just for making this stuff, but for presenting it in a form both uncompromised and affordable.

Having now gotten to the end of the video, I think it's worth offering that the perspective which you, all those years ago, provided on unaged, overproof Jamaican rums (in a Blanton's world) was formative to my experience as a spirits drinker. As a novice drinker, I felt a little punk rock with my Wray & Nephew, and I owe that to you - keep up the good work!

Great review. I’ve had a few bottles of Wray & Nephew and think it’s wonderful with a splash of Evian. I have a bottle of Rum Bar on its way arriving tomorrow and looking forward to checking it out. Hi thanks for the review. I'm making a purchase decision between Rum Nation White Pot Still and Rum-Bar. Can you tell me the difference between the two since they're both from WPE.
@differentspirits4157
@differentspirits4157 6 месяцев назад
I like both a lot. IIRC the Rum Nation comes across as higher ester, but the Rum Bar is a bit more subtle and offered at higher strength. Both well worth having - the RB might be a bit more versatile in cocktails, the RN might show a bit better in a tasting glass.

Have you come across The Funk? I’d seen it kicking around at Astor Wines in Manhattan for a while and had misgivings about the name and vague label, but the other day I decided a $25 50% abv pot still Jamaican rum couldn’t turn out too bad. Turns out it’s a higher ester unaged Worthy Park and it’s great! I was looking for WP Overproof but they were out, The Funk was a welcome alternative. It’s not insanely funky, but to my memory it’s more than Rum Fire. Something to keep an eye out for if it’s still around, I can’t find much about the bottler so it might have been a one off from a few years ago
@differentspirits4157

Great video and a good reminder to look for value. Unfortunately Rum Fire is now £43-£45 in the UK, I think it's gone up in price fairly recently. Quality of experience at a price point, across all spirits, is something no one seems to be really doing but is really interesting.
@differentspirits4157
@differentspirits4157 Год назад
_I'm_ trying to do it!! 😂 As I said below, I actually still think it's worth that 45 quid asking price, as irritating as the hike is. The Hampden premium is becoming a real thing.

You're doing great at highlighting amazing QPRs on this channel!! It would be fascinating to see which, say, 12 bottles you'd pick across all categories for your "Maxing Out QPR" bar. There might be $30 bottles, there might be $100 bottles. But it would be your pantheon of quality for price.

Seven Caves has a 63%ABV funky unaged rum that is only $35. I want to get one but I don't want to pay the shipping and tax and it ends up way over $50. No way will it be in the league of Rum Fire but I want to try it. I may go to the distillery some time this year. I liked the aged stuff they make but for the price I would rather buy from Barbados or St.Lucia. Way better than Privateer but they don't have any aged cask strength stuff.

I appreciate Wray, but I LOATHE that stupid plastic do-hikey they put in the top of the bottle that makes pouring a mis-adventure. Do they think this thing somehow keeps people from drinking too much because the rum goes everywhere but where you want it to? I’m with you on Fire, Bar & Wray. Have never seen Charly’s. But…. Not saying it’s equivalent, La Favorite (in a liter) coeur de cane 50% is damn good. And relative to a lot of products, an equally stupid value.
