Given that I've already reviewed all four of these bottles before, you would think this video would have been easy. But no: between distributor issues and my citymates not caring about anything beyond bourbon and tequila it turns out that Chicago shelves are totally bereft of Jamaican overproofs as I write this (yes, even W&N) - meaning my plans, namely completing this series of Jamaican rum videos with a proper re-review, had to go by the board. It was even a nightmare just finding time to record this, a video which therefore amounts to a pure victory lap: you're seeing me here late at night after several days of taking care of a 14-month-old with an ear infection.
But all of that's okay - because these four rums are all stunningly good and very strong and extraordinarily special, and (most impressively) cheap. Wray & Nephew White Overproof is the first review I ever did ( • Wray & Nephew White Ov... ), long before I even thought this would be a channel, and it is the rock upon which the last 300-odd videos are built. Charley's J.B. Overproof, as previously reviewed by guest host Tom ( • Charley's J.B. Overpro... ), is much weirder and certainly much less polished, but no worse for all that. Rum-Bar White Overproof from Worthy Park (reviewed at • Worthy Park Rum Bar Wh... ) gets a step up via its exclusive use of pot distillate, and - pound for pound, all roles in mind - it might actually be the best of this bunch. But the winner for sheer all-out density and power is the monstrous high ester Rum Fire from Hampden Estate (reviewed at • Hampden Estate Rum Fir... ), possibly the best flavor-per-dollar ratio anywhere on the market.
I scored these 86+, 87-, 87 flat, and 88 back in their respective reviews, and I see no reason to change that - but at the same time, I could see any of these being anyone's favorite for a whole number of reasons. As the reigning kings of value in spirits these bottles have earned their victory lap and then some. The world owes Jamaica a debt of gratitude not just for making this stuff, but for presenting it in a form both uncompromised and affordable.
