In honor of August's super blue moon, I decided to do writing-related activities I only get around to....once in a blue moon. 🌝
☟↓ QUESTIONS FOR YOU BELOOOOOW! ↓☟
D I S C U S S I O N Q U E S T I O N S :
What are some writing-related activities you do once in a blue moon? How about once in a full moon (like monthly lolol)?
Do you have any moon-based routines?
What's your favorite or most-used writing craft book? (Conversely, do you have any that everyone hyped up but didn't work for you AT ALL? Let me know!)

What a thrill to see Liselle Sambury's Delicious Monsters on the library shelves!!! And btw overwriting is not a problem. Break it into two volumes. LOL I'm actually starting to write again, which means I'm feeling more normal. Hurray! Walking with a cane. So happy to be home and watching Kate videos. Love you! ❤💚💙💜💜💜

AHHH I am so glad you're feeling better!!! And that you're able to start writing again! It can be such torture to be separated from creating. :(( So glad you're past that hump! It's not a bad idea except it was meant to be a standalone lolol. 😂 Or so I thought! Who even knows at this point!

I was extremely lucky that someone in my family bought me one of Lawrence Block's books on writing (I think it was "Writing the Novel: From Plot to Print" but this was over 30 years ago). The emphasis on finding a process that works for you, rather than following some other writer's process, was incredibly valuable to teenage me.

I use craft books all the time!! I have two favorites- for fantasy, Wonderbook is amazing and inspiring. In general, I like Seven Secrets A Novelist Can Learn From Actors by Brandi Lynn Collins. And for romance also romancing the beat

The weather is just starting to break here in Nashville so it shouldn't be too bad by the end of the month / early October.

One of my favorite craft books has to be James Scott Bell's Super Structure. I run his structure along side the 30 Chapter Novel Outline I found on Google awhile back. I start with the 30, and then work into the other to make sure I am hitting all of my points. The 30 really helped me get over being a pantser.

Oooh that's so cool! I haven't heard of that before, I'll have to check his book out. (And be on the lookout for that 30 chapter structure. I've heard of the 3 Acts, 27 Chapters structure, but not the 30! I'm intrigued.)

I love when you montage through something you watch on RU-vid and I recognize the creator you're watching! Last time it was Hannah Witton, this time it was TL YarnCrafts - what other overlap in interests will I discover next montage? 😂

Until watching this I had no clue where the phrase "Once in a blue moon" came from. I'm always learning stuff from your vlogs lol. Reading a craft book is also a once-in-a-blue-moon thing for me, but I know the research rabbit hole very well lol so maybe I should try your method of checking afterward (I'm fully okay with the caveat of messing ish up lol. I do that anyway on my own even after researching before lol). And yes for Gone Girl!!! One of the rare instances or me where both the book and adaptation are good.

Fav most used writing craft book: How to write a damn good novel by James N. Frey. A how to book on the art of dramatic novel writing. With some excellent examples from books I hadn’t but have how read. This one works for me.

I've read several craft books over the years but I found them unhelpful for the most part however I read Shut Up and Write The Book but Jenna Moreci and is hands down the best craft book I've ever read. I was a staunch pantser but I've started outlining which I learned how to do because of that book. Its 100% worth it.

I love The Heroine's Journey by Gail Carriger. I use it very frequently and it's a fairly quick read.

I tend to juggle different parts of craft books. Right now I am reading 100 Ways to Improve Your Writing by Gary Provost. I stopped writing for a while after some difficut things in life. So coming back I've needed a boost.

The moon was amazing ❤ I saw it from my living room window (legitimately great apart for watching the sky). Personally I prefer over writing and then reading everything back to get a feel for what I'm writing around. Often it's a great way to find themes that are more subtle because they keep popping in during the excessive words. The rambling is easier to cut than it is to add the perfect number of words. At least...in my experience 😅

Yeah, all sub-plots have to support main line scenes or the story, so you need interconnects either through characters or situations. found in both, don't forget the Hero Goal Sequences as well.

Write A Novel And Get It Published: Teach Yourself by Nigel Watts is one of the firat craft books I read at about 12 or 13 and I have been using his method of the 8 point story arc as a basic guiding principle for writing my novels. Its been longer then I like to admit since then going on 17 years. Im not sure there is anything I use as much as that, though I lost my Giant Tiger copy years ago now I still rwad it occasionally though the library. I guess the only other craft book I use with regularity is No Plot No Problem how yo write a novel in 30 days by Chris Baty (founder of nanowrimo) I read it every year (or at least parts of it) before nanowrimo starts.

Ah that comment about being able to count how many times you'll see your siblings in your life hit me like a ton of bricks. My brother lives in Europe and I'm in South Africa so... T_T Sometimes it's good to be reminded though, appreciate that we can video chats at any time. In terms of craft books - I use all of Angela Ackerman & Becca Puglisi's thesaurus books constantly. They are a treasure trove and recommend them very much. Something I do once in a Blue Moon - I storyboard a scene in my story. Especially if I can see it clearly in my head but can't write it in words.

Are you enjoying Notion? I'm loving it! I just started using it a few weeks ago and it has really helped me organize everything going on in my life (writing, jewelry, kids, puppy, etc.)...have you done a video on how you use it?

Yesssss, I love Notion! In the same way I love my planner, which is that it makes my life SO MUCH EASIER when I use it, but also sometimes I'll randomly fall off using it bahaha. I haven't done one yet, but I'll add it to my list to show in the future! :) Do you have any templates you love??
@CarmellasJewelry

@@KateCavanaugh I found a free time tracking template that I can use to track how long each task takes me through a workday (I am a jeweler so I’m sort of in charge of my own time, which is great but can lead to lots of procrastination 😂)…it has really helped me keep focused on certain tasks so I can see how long it takes me to finish a project. It’s free and I found it in the “more templates” by Solt Wagner. What templates do you recommend?

If it’s well written and interesting I like big books. Most of the books I’ve been reading lately are about that size or more
