Well articulated review and criticisms. I haven’t seen the show, I’m just doing some research on it for audition purposes. But excellent job being clear about how it wasn’t for you but that may not be the case for everyone. You have my respect
I saw this show (for the first time) at NYCC this past January and enjoyed it but didn’t laugh out loud once. I was smiling a lot and thought Sutton and the rest of the all star cast and orchestra were great! However, since the show itself didn’t do a lot for me, I don’t have a desire to see it on Broadway. I’m surprised that the set design was not enhanced for the Broadway production. I had thought something extra would be added for Broadway, rather than just a direct transfer from Encores. I don’t know if this show needed a transfer to Broadway but hope all who sees it, has a great time at the theatre!
It sounds like we had similar experiences not finding the show funny. Disappointing to hear there were barely if any design enhancements from the NYCC version to Bway. Hoping the next musical for the Bway season is better for both of us!
I disagree. It was hilarious. It was a fun night at the theatre. Cast was excellent. No need for extensive set design. It was always at the castle. Beautiful colors between backdrop and costumes.
@yankee04 I am glad you found the production hilarious. Most of the audience at the show I attended did as well. And I can understand your point of view about the extensive set design maybe not being necessary. I think I just hoped there would be something extra added for the Broadway production. Anyhow, I agree it’s an excellent, talented, and professional cast. Loved the colors too, the costumes 😍.
Seeing Sutton in Drowsy Chaperone is what catapulted me into a Sutton fan. Too bad this doesn't seem like the best fit for her. And I agree; I don't know that it needed to be revived. I have also seen some great versions in high schools and community theatres.
The Millie cast recording was my origin story for being a Sutton fan. Glad to see many are enjoying her performance - it didn't hit for me though. I may have liked this more if I had seen it done in community or hs theatre previously.
