They would be ... but I'm pretty sure that the storywriters also have way too many characters on hand. Even though Red was given a regular cast schedule in Season 2, they didn't give her regular cast treatment. There was WAY more character development in S1 than S2 despite the added number of hours unto screening. Red is an interesting character. I'm not sure if it was such a good idea to give her dual character portrayal of both Red and the Wolf. It was a plot twist that wasn't exactly expertly handled and kinda defeats the purpose of Red being a cautionary tale. The Bad Wolf is, in the traditional Grimm-style representation that we all know and love and from which the tale has been adapted from multiple times, a vision of the young rakes of nobility. That being said, I also understand that the Cursed Ruby wouldn't have been so interesting as a character if she didn't also have this other side of her. That being said, Ruby should have had a far more predatory edge to her. If Red was supposed to be the gentle, innocent human aspect of her being (as per the story evolution) managing to tame the viciousness at the core of human being, then Ruby should have been far more predatory, rough, and machiavellian. I think they got the wardrobe right in S1 if they were trying to depict that, she seemed strong, confidant, and physically evocative. But the attitude wasn't really there. I would have loved to see a take of the young rake (The Bad Wolf), being depicted in Ruby far more. Well spoken, able to lay emotional and vocal traps, that ensnare people into their own form of despair. It would have been all the more delicious to see the idea of a predatory noble being flipped unto its head ... a traditionally male character (or at least, the depiction of a male noble's lusts), contained to a female character. I mean, Meaghan Ory has the stature and the physique to be physically potent, an exoticisation of strength. Fairly broad shouldered; trim and lean. She could very well have been portrayed as an evocative predator, that dabbled in extensive wordplay and an exotic depiction of physical potency (much like her mother, Anita, in S2's Child of the Moon). The Ruby of S1 was ... all too innocent. If the curse was meant to make the characters forget who they were (to the point of reversing their character traits, ala David Nolan being weak, pathetic, and indecisive) ... then why isn't Ruby the emotionally coarse, cunning predator? Able to hide amidst the flock with effortless ability, luring people into sordid and perditious situations, to take advantage of them? In the land without magic, you can't have Ruby kick arse, but they could have at least kept that wild aspect of her prior the self-realization she has in S1's Red-Handed. I GET that they were trying to say "She's a heroine. She shouldn't do those things ... therefore her Cursed form is that of a lost youth, direction-less and lacking fundamental self-esteem" ... but that doesn't really gel for me. Graham retains his excellent accuracy, and his lack of evolved people-skills, Gold retains his machiavellian genius, Archie retains a philosopher's wisdom, Dr. Whale retains his love of scientific theory. I don't see why they couldn't have Ruby retain something of a natural predatory spark. Something that would have elevated her above being a simple snowflake to be handled with care. Even if they gave her the same amount of screen time as they did in S2, it would be nice to see her given a good, solid story arc. If they are just going to insert her into the regular cast to act as an accessory to Snow White's retinue of loyal warriors then .... then it will disappoint me sincerely. Tl;dr? Red needs to be far more decisive. She needs more hard instinct. She was willing to tear out throats as a wolf, when killing the guards of King George's warhost. "You have a little...", when Grumpy pointed out she had blood on her lips ... She needs more of THAT. She needs to be powerful, a symbol of nature's wrath ... unpredictable, cunning, and singleminded. She's THE Wolf, let her be the goddamn Wolf. No collar and leash this time.
