A wise person once said that you only need to know two things to do a good concrete job. 1) Where you want the concrete placed. 2) The phone number of somebody with experience that can put it there for you.

Nothing better than pouring concrete. It produces such a nice finished product that if done properly will last you lifetime. I like to hand mix it with a stand mixer for smaller jobs like sidewalks and patios. One thing Dougo forgot to tell them is you can get severe chemical burns from wet cement so try to limit direct exposure to your skin as much as possible.

@@howardrich408 Number one you say the man is ignorant. Look at your spelling and grammar as it is really bad. "Use" is incorrect if you meant to say you have or you've got it really wrong. The so is not needed. If you belonged to a masonry union you did work with brick, block, and stone and the construction of buildings with these products, you were a bricklayer. If you did concrete flat work, you would belong to the cement mason's union. Although related they are not the same. I am a retired masonry foreman, superintendent with 40 years under my belt. We didn't cross the line on jobs we stuck with our specialty. I do know how to do flatwork as I have seen enough of it done and I have done it on my own projects. Local 8 Illinois.

@@Bricky-gs3lp well I'm sorry if I ruffled your feathers and the person doesn't know what he's talking about and I apologize about my spelling that's why I became a mason God made me a person that was to work physically and not mentally but I am proud of what I accomplish in my lifetime when I can drive up and down the streets and roads of my communities and cities and see what I built with my hands I am proud of that
@Bricky-gs3lp
@Bricky-gs3lp Год назад
@@howardrich408Rich you didn't ruffle my feathers. You missed the whole point. You felt entitled enough to be able to call the man ignorant because he didn't know something, but you don't know how to spell or use grammar. The main point is teach someone the correct way but don't call them ignorant, or stupid, ugly, or dumb. Be good to people. You didn't like it when a foreman was all over your butt. Also being able to lay brick is an art, I did it for over 40 years and I also see many homes, schools, and hospitals I have built, and it does give me pride. One of my mottos was that if it is worth doing do it right and take pride in your work. You didn't like it that I pointed out your shortcomings so how do you think the person felt that you called ignorant. Just because you work with your hands does not mean that you can't improve your mind. Be good to people, treat them as you would like to be treated. The Golden Rule.

My stepdad drives a mixer. The first thing he says is it’s a concrete mixer, not a cement mixer. Cement is an ingredient in concrete lol. I poured 4 yards in July 2 years ago for a building pad for my sister and the only help I had was my 2 young nephews and the mixer driver. Needless to say I nearly died and it got away from me while finishing it, but it looked good enough for a build to sit on and for me to have not done concrete work for 12 years lol! Concrete Chet, CONCRETE. Although the terms cement and concrete are often used interchangeably, cement is actually an ingredient of concrete. Concrete is basically a mixture of aggregates and paste. The aggregates are sand and gravel or crushed stone; the paste is water and portland cement. Concrete gets stronger as it gets older. Or if you prefer: Ready-mixed concrete is used in construction projects where the construction site is not willing, or is unable, to mix concrete on site. Using ready-mixed concrete means product is delivered finished, on demand, in the specific quantity required, in the specific mix design required.

They had a finisher they quit selling concrete to because they put too much water in it and then would want the concrete plant to pay to have it tore up and redone. The contractor I worked for out of high school who taught me concrete finishing told me about another finisher he knew that wouldn’t order a “20x40” or something like that and would put so much water in it they could pour an entire slab and never move the truck!

FYI rebar is a trade off in concrete, it rusts and expands causing the concrete to spalled but is needed where heavy load is carried. If rebar is needed it needs to be covered by at least 2" including the ends to prevent water from wicking in along it. Plastic coated rebar is becoming a standard and so is glass fiber rebar.
