Note: I got the name wrong of the Moldovan politician who recently fled the country. There were several prominent politicians who left as a result of the collapse of the government. See this article: balkaninsight.com/2019/06/17/moldova-faces-new-turmoil-after-ex-leader-leaves/

you have mistaken a grey cardinal (Plahotniuc) with the formal president ) he is a Moldavian version of Howard Hughes ) he is not a politician - he is a businessman with lot of power and influence ) he was hoping to enter the local politics by buying everyone ) same mistake as a Hughes did ) Great video BTW - thank you for your work - and thank you for mentioning Bald and Bankrupt - now I'm watching his videos - next time in Chisinau just give me a notice and I could help you with a small city tour or help if you need it ). P. S. Majorca is great - have you seen the caves?

Actually, Gabriel...*I'm[Philip in the video]* Asked me about the President because of the billboard in Chisinau of him. So, Gabriel asked 'He's the President, right?" "Well"....I said to Gabriel...." Yes and No"...He was the President for the last two years in name'....but now he's an 'ACTUAL' President with real power....a few months ago the 'REAL" [Grey Cardinal] President fled the country Mr Plathoniuc..., Who WASN'T the President but WAS in many ways".. So, not surprisingly Gabriel must have got confused .... I take responsibility for Gabriel's understandable mistake . Sorry President Dodon :)))Sorry Gabriel!
@Goshchiuk
@Goshchiuk 5 лет назад
@@philipquick7423 I can argue here Dodon still has no power in Moldova due to legislative limitations instituted back in late 90,s by Voronin to limit the power of former president Luchinschi. Actually Russian president has much more power in his country (presidential Republic) than Moldovan president will ever have here (parliament republic) the reason for this was the events in Russia in 1993 when a coup d'etat gave to the Russian president (eltsin at that time) actual power (after changing the constitution) here after our small revolution constitution is still the same so Plahotniuc still has all the power (through constitutional court which is still in his hands) donon now tries to get the CC by installing his man there = only after constitutional change he might obtain actual power here

Hello Kalf...this is Philip from the video....I would like to stress the publicity was not contrived.....i'm a mega fan of Gabriel....who works very spontaneously on his travels [tho he's a highly organized guy too] and I arranged the trip cos I wanted him to see something more about Moldova, we had planned to just walk around Chisinau....but I saw he had done a few walking around videos of Chisinau so I thought...why not...and just for fun I tried to arrange the trip 1 hour before our meeting ...luckily it worked....Anthony was a friend....and George from wine Moldova...who is a friend did it for a favor....I am passionate about wine....and I did it seeing Gabriel as a guest and wanting a friend to have the best experience on his holiday...i think it worked and hope you enjoyed it?

Almost no tourists go there. THAT is why you should go. Visited Acropolis in Athens recently. THOUSANDS of people there that day. Good thing is though that people move like herds so for a traveler wanting to see something unique those places still exists.. It is fascinating that people always go to the same places. I also follow the herd to some degree, but the best thing is to do like Gabriel now: go to a country that only see a few thousand tourists A YEAR believe it or not...

But that gets harder ander harder as the economy on greek islands is almost everywhere basically for tourists... What a pitty as I would love to live for some days on an Island where greek agriculture still exists and where you can duve into the see at the same time...

Gabriel, the tour of Cricova brings back memories from my visit last year. My husband and I did the wine tasting at the end and I was very tipsy, if not drunk 😂 I'll admit, the wine, especially the sparkling variety, was very tasty. Did you get any chocolate with the tasting? I loved that! Your tour guide didn't mention that Yuri Gagarin got lost in Cricova for 2 days. Are you going to Transnistria? By the way, I'm not a fan of Bald and Bankrupt. He's very one-sided with his videos on Moldova. At least your videos, so far, have shown a more diverse, man-on-the-street view of the city/country.

Pro tip for drinking wine : With red wine you hold the glass itself because the temprature of your hand improves the flavour. With chilled wines you dont touch the glass but rather hold the stem, to prevent the wine from warming up! ;-D

First, let me say how much I enjoy not only your videos but also your style of travel. You go someplace and walk around and are very open to whatever happens. In other words, you take in the location on its terms. Second, delighted to see you in Moldova. I was there a year and a half ago (in Chisinau only) and will be back in October in time for their annual wine festival and to see sights beyond the capital. I originally came here sort of by accident. I had planned a trip to Kiev, Ukraine and then to Brasov, Romania. A waitress at a local Greek restaurant in my home city just happened to be from Moldova, and I noticed it was on the way, so I scheduled a few days stopover in Chisinau just because and ended up falling a bit in love with the place. It's not grand like Budapest or Vienna. In fact, as you note, you walk along the streets and can easily see that Moldova in general and Chisinau in specific has taken more than its fair share of body blows throughout history, but like you, I found the place to hold a certain undeniable charm and authenticity. I'm glad this underdog of Europe is getting a little appreciation. Thanks for the videos.

Be sure to check our wineries, because there's not much to see in the city. I would recomend Cricova and Castelul Mimi - two very different wineries. Also there are a few interesting monesteries the nearest to Chisinau is Old Orhei, and the most interesting (in my opinion) is Capriana Monastery.

I don't generally drink alcohol but now I must check out my local liquor store for some Moldovan wine and sparkling wine. It's really interesting to see a British ex-pat living there. I did know about the huge theft from the Treasury from some other videos I looked up after watching your videos. That kind of mass thievery explains the temper of the times and the economic difficulties Moldova is going through. Excellent set of videos on Moldova -- definitely a hidden gem for those who want to travel the less beaten path. I'm looking forward to more.

Hi I'm Philip from the video.....good luck finding some Moldovan wine....it's not so easy to find....but if you need any help I'll ask someone.....As for the theft....most of the culprits fled the country recently.....Gabriel made a mistake in the video....Mr Dodon....is the actual President.....he is legitimate....Alas...Moldova had a kind of politician who managed to via the ministry of Justice...and an alliance , control Moldova...his name was Plathoniuc...I am not surprised Gabriel mixed it up...in the video....cos most people in Moldova do...too. In a nutshell Mr Dodon was the president for the last 2 years but he couldn't do anything....only a few months ago...there was a kind of mini coup and the ' politician. Mr Plathoniuc fled Moldova...allowing Mr Dodon to work as a real President with his new alliance.....hope it helps?

Great videos, Gabriel! Moldova is a beautiful country. My family and I love living here. But don't let the Russian speakers fool ya, Moldova is a Romanian speaking country, as Romanian is the national language. There can be quite a bit of contempt between Russians and Moldovans regarding which language to speak. In my experience, Russians choose only to speak Russian, even if they understand Romanian, and there can be a LOT of pride associated with that - especially when they say, "Let's speak the better language, Russian." There's a shift happening now and will continue as long as Moldova is independent and Romanian is the national language. Most young adults speak Romanian primarily. Many if not most older people speak Russian, or both. Thanks for the videos - check out mine too! :)
@evgheniiturco9268
@evgheniiturco9268 5 лет назад
"Let's speak the better language, Russian." never in my life have i heard anything like that. Sounds like something a teenager would say, or a heavy drinker. There are some marginalized people here, who have nothing but language to be proud of, but this is not common among normal people. The language policy in Moldova is almost nonexistant, this problem could have been solved long ago.

@@evgheniiturco9268 I have only lived here one year, but I have had locals tell me this kind of thing often. And when I, an American, unknowingly encounter a Russian speaker and speak to them in Romanian, you would think I've just smacked them in the face.

Actually, the more one sees of Chisinau, the more one comes to realise that it's really not at all 'bad'; in fact, it's truly quite an attractive, pleasant-looking city. The tour of/tasting at that amazing and highly impressive wine cellar-cum-small town was r e a l l y interesting; and i'm most intrigued by the fact that my 'compatriot' and fellow (former-) Londoner [ ...his accent gives him dead away ({; D ...! ] should be so greatly - and so long-term - engaged in/ involved with Moldova: he seems, sincerely, altogether quite charming - as well as very knowledgeable on 'the topic'. Am pretty sure that was actually "mamaliga" (the "polenta") accompanied by sour cream (the "sauce") you'd had in that restaurant, and it certainly appears that you've indeed grown, understandably, rather fond of Chisinau - and Moldova, yes? ~Excellent video/vlog, **Gabe*;* thank you!!

i would also say there is another spectacular wine cellar near Chisinau...officially the biggest wine cellar in the world in the guinness book of records [i'm philip from the video]...called Milestii Mici....you can see it on Netflix....with Jack Whithill ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-v28SBWLdSFY.html in episode 3 [this is the trailer...you can see a few clips] .....I'm a fan of Moldova....so want people to know what a great place it is here! BTW...I'm from true blue Surrey.......and I used to speak dead posh....then I moved to run a wine shop in Loughton in Essex/London. in the eighties....so no stopping....my accent changed....then moved to Stratford and East Ham.....until I was 34....Hence die-hard London accent....Essex/East end..... .

Cricova is the 2nd larges wine cellar in the world. The biggest is still in Moldova, near Chișinău, at Mileștii Mici. I actually liked that one better, possibly because they give me a lot more wine to "taste".

Well now, this is quite a difference to your first video when you first got there. It's hard to say but it seems as if the Government is actually trying to improve the surroundings of the city. Maybe all that rubble on the sidewalks are actually improvements in progress?? I was impressed with the Wine Cellars. I wish the Gov. and people of Moldova sll the best in the future. Do they have a Ministry of Tourism or something like that which could promote the country? Big thank you for all your travel videos. I am going to check to see if you did one on Salzburg, Austria. I see you are from the U.K. Why did you choose to live in Moldova? As long as the Government is stable then perhaps they should make it a Tax Haven for the rich and develop the Banking sector. Money would pour in from all over. You know, Tourism is also a great tool for economic development. The Government in the Cayman Islands went that route and what has taken place there is really an eye opener.

I am from Moldova and I live now in Denmark. Actually this is the second biggest wine cellar in the world. The biggest wine cellar in the world in Moldova is Milestii Mici. It was founded in 1969 to store, preserve and mature high-quality wines. The limestone in the galleries maintains constant humidity (85-95%) and temperature (12-14 °C [54-57 °F]) throughout the year. The longer some specific red wines are stored in such ideal conditions, the more they improve. Some wines are cellared for several decades before being sold. In August 2005, Mileștii Mici was registered in the Guinness World Records as the biggest wine collection in the world. Overall, the complex holds nearly 2 million bottles. More than 70% of the stored wines are red, 20% are white and about 10% are dessert wines. The most valuable items of this collection, worth €480 a bottle, were produced in 1973-74; they are now exported only to Japan. Wines are exported from Mileștii Mici to Sweden, Japan, the USA, Great Britain, the Czech Republic, Poland, Greece, Germany, Denmark, Finland, and China.

So naturally I looked at her and said, "So now what?" She certainly wasn't expecting that. She looked startled and confused.
