Tulum is one of the most visited places in Mexico, anyone looking into what to do in Tulum would find a load of options, so it's no surprises it's popular. Some of the main things to do are checking out the beaches, nightlife, good vibes, luxury hotels on the beach and the Tulum Ruins. While all of those sound good, the Tulum Ruins were something we've been wanting to check out for a long time.
The Tulum Ruins are Mayan ruins running along the Caribbean sea, 12 metres up on cliffs over looking the beach... spectacular place!
How about the rest of Tulum? It's about as touristy as we expected, but the good news is there is definitely 'zones', so you've still got the chance to see a more local side the town if you really want to. The instagram side of Tulum is interesting and all, but finding local food and seeing that side/zone is more important to us first off!

It’s too “instagram”???? I picked tulum because someone said it reminded them a lot of Bali and that’s my dream vacation but not for a few more years.

Why is Bali your dream vacation? A lot of Bali is literally built on Instagram unfortunately, one of the most 'Instagrammy' places we've been. There are great places outside of that which aren't of course, but the Canggu and Seminyaks are deep in it.

I went to Bali with a friend, and while we DID enjoy our experience, I 1000% agree with it feeling super 'instagrammy' (We were in Seminyak and Canguu) I would be hesitant to return with my hubby, as we prefer things a little more 'authentic' . I DID however, fall deeply in love with Nook...and would love to teleport there once a month from Canada.

Looks like they have turned up the tourist volume around Tulum, much more commercial than when I was there last, about seventeen years ago. If you want to see something less touristy, go back into the bush to the lesser visited archeological sites. I started with local sites like Tulum, but ended up hiring a car and going out to the others, there have been times when I was the only one there besides the site workers.

If you picked that up from this video then we're sad to say that it's probably 3 times more than what you expect. We avoided the touristy zones, this is the more chill side!

Did we want this? Did we want that? After several no, thanks.... "What do you want amigo?" My reply, "To be left the f*** alone!"

We stayed in Akumal in 2016, for 2 weeks, and visited a Cenote just slightly north of Akumal, called "Cenote Azul" (not to be confused with the one South of Tulum). I think at the time it was only around 5 US dollars per person. g.co/kgs/xMvepR

Think it depends on the size of the cenotes, but thats about the price yeah. The one we drove to was a grouping and more like a full day trip thing

How does Tulum compare to Canggu do you think? They seem to be rather similar in their Insta-worthyness

We'd pick Canggu easily. Tulum is definitely more of a grouping of the 'hotel zone' IG heaven and its overwhelming and in your face and not as much going on around that. Canggu offers a better balance in our opinion

Just got back from 9 days in Tulum and would say it’s definitely not worth it. The beaches are filled with narcissistic women taking tons of selfies, and showing off their assets. Gag! The rest of the Riviera Maya is overwhelmed with Las Vegas style resorts that are the equivalent of Carnival cruise ships

That way of cooking chicken, is used in northern Mexico, as far as I know, from the state of Sinaloa, and is very common in Guadalajara, Jalisco

Really nice low light film shots in the beginning during the sunrise did you use your Panasonic GH5 for that? Also to loom looks gorgeous did you guys enjoy the beach or the ruins better?

Yeah that was the GH5 in the morning, I wouldnt say its good in low light but mid light is good haha. We enjoyed the pool and beach a bit more because of the heat!

Daneger and Stacey That’s good to know, I guess from what I read it It didn’t sound like it would do that well in lower light shots but I think it still came out pretty well and it was nice to start out the video like that. Yeah that makes sense I’ve heard it gets pretty hot down there and a lot more tourist have been going the last few years to check out the ruins and it can be pretty busy

We're leaving for Mexico in 10 days! It'll be a 3 week adventure up and down Quintana Roo. Tulum being our first stop, how did you like it? Did you make it to the cenotes after all? Which were your favorite? Also, great video! I wish it was 30 mins long :)

Only a few days till you go now! We didnt make it to any cenotes in the end. Tulum is OK, very Instagram if you're into that, thats why we hired the scooter and properly explored rather than just staying in the hotel zone hot spot

I mean I wouldn't know but for all the chill factor you seemed more relaxed in Scotland. Is Mexico hard work and then once you find the spot you can relax or is it that there are so many different experiences competing for your attention that the pace of the country kinda rushes at you? Great vlog... really enjoying your take on the place.

Good observations! Mexico is definitely more intense, more of a culture shock, a lot more hustle and noise etc. It's definitely more of a rush and adventure, while Scotland feels very familiar to us in terms of New Zealand comparisons. Each have their positives!
