I and my brothers have and are still running some of the biggest cranes on the east coast, from upper NY state to Delaware. That crane is magnificent and worth multi millions of dollars. You don’t get to operate that kind of equipment without lots of experience and plenty of talent. I have been retired quite some time but I know the men who qualify come from the Operating Engineers Union.

@wixom01
@wixom01 6 лет назад
Comment by "Fried Carbo" below is somewhat accurate, IMO. There are new designs for "ringers" (as he calls them) where the ballast is the center of the ring, and does not move with the crane. The crane pivots around the ballast. This has HUGE advantages. Less power is needed to rotate the crane. Less transport is needed to move the crane. The crane weights less. The crane is easier to assemble/diassemble. The crane is more flexible because you don't need a full ring if you don't need it.....and on and on with advantages and few disadvantages. It's not surprising because "ringers" are fairly new to the world of cranes, so they are evolving rapidly!

The funny thing about this crane is that the shipping containers that are used to ship the crane to a new location are the same containers that are used as counterweight.

Hoist block is reeved with many falls to pick load. At full winch speed hook comes up very very slow. I had idiots complain when I hoisted 80ton transformer with 12 parts. Ground monkeys are clueless how to operate and green horns think it is like a excavator to side pull loads also. I was a ground rigger before I was an operator and shut my mouth an learned. An old time crane operator who trained me said " never let the baggage handlers tell the pilot how to fly the plane"... For the guy saying how slow load is moving. Learn how to operate first.

A nice, but somewhat frustrating video. I think the camera operator ignored some of the most interesting action, such as the carriage moving as the crane slews, or the winches turning as the load is lifted. The luffing jib appears to be fixed at one angle, so the reach is set by tipping the boom. Watching that happen in fast forward would have been nice. The camera operator got bored at a couple of points, and started focusing on things other than the crane lift. The vantage point they chose did not allow any close-ups of the crane in action. The Mammoet crew boss sure put in a long day, it looked like.
