Great restoration! They are beautiful looking. I was surprised too to know that the handles had grips on them. You give a lot of really helpful information. Thanks for posting this.
Very cool pliers - I have seen these iron workers' pliers before and had not idea what they were. Great job! Man those little needle nose pliers came out nice! Moving into the new digs next Wednesday....cannot wait to get the new shop set up and start restoring some new finds I picked up! Thanks again for yet another great video!😊
Just recently I also switched from double to triple blade shavers. To my amazement I got over 40 shaves (true) out of my first shaver. Thank you for the tip... with the plastic cover on I'm bound to get over 80. ...........When you first showed the red handles I honestly thought that was post restoration. That must be the best value for $2 I've seen. Stay healthy.
The shaving story really make me laugh!! We've all done some crazy things from time to time. I'm forever looking for my glasses when they're actually sitting on my head. Those pliers came out awesome!! Never would have thought there were nice rubber handles under the tape. Great score for a buck each.
Thanks for cutting the week in half Scout! Great job on the pliers, I'm a fan of the craftsman ones. All the stupid things I do an forget now, can't imagine what it will be when I get older, and I'm only 27 jet... The tape, I'm really thinking somebody put those on when new to protect the handles, they damage so easily and I hardly see damage on yours.
What a nice set of pliers the craftsman embellishments look fantastic I was amazed to see red handles under the tape the 50/ 50 mix that you used can I use any transmission fluid and as-atone or doesn’t have to be certain types also what wire brushes do you use for the dremal I’m a bit sick of the cheap ones spitting wires back at me ha ha great video John thanks so much god bless 🙏👍
Two sets of great pliers both of which I'd be glad to have in my toolbox. I like picking up tools with either someones initials or company names on them, it adds to the interest of the tools. Who was that person? Is the company still going? Something we may never know.
Nice score ... and beautiful restoration job .....About aging and wearing pants... George Burns said: "First you forget to zip up, then you forget to zip down".
Yeah I got my share of senior moments, I finally decided to just enjoy them instead of stressing out... My best one ever was when I was sitting at a stop sign waiting for it to turn green
Hey you have a lot of pliers, we could not be prouder to see it as well. Hey no talking old now, we feel great ourselves and we owe it all to RU-vid. Oh no the plastic guard oh well if that is the worst you do getting older. Lance & Patrick.
Having now hit my 60s, nothing surprises my wife. Going shopping for one item but coming back with a bag ful but not the item you went for, arriving at the top of the stairs but forgetting why you went up, etc, etc. You have this to look forward to😁. Bargains of the year on the pliers and a great restoration video.
My wife dreads sending me to Lidl or Aldi as she knows I will return with at least something for the garage or workshop. When in the USA I loved shopping in Wal-Mart where I could buy a canoe, hunting rifle, generator next to milk, bread and vegetables.
Did you know doors are portals for memory loss. As soon as I walk through a door I've forgotten why I went through the door for. Great refurb again Scoutcrafter 👍
Nice set of pliers now... I hear you John, I was just telling my buddy today how 40s I was feeling the changes, but now in the 50s,, holy cow the body and mind are getting slower lol,, all is good though. I can recall my Dad and Grandpa talking about it, and them telling me,, you wait,, it will happen to you too! Take care Pal, thanks.
Like you I am not an Ironworker, but like you, I sure have a lot of awe and admiration for what they do. Heavy equipment folks and so many other trades included. Great job on both those pliers though I like the iron workers best. When you mentioned EC on the needle nose I thought what a coincidence if they had belonged to Essential Craftsman 😂.
I guess you can truly say that project was "a pain in the neck"! I get comments that I waste my time on the Craftsman tools, that I should just turn them in for new. I think you did pretty good for $2!
I Had TO GIVE IT A THUMBS UP AS SOON AS I heard about the shaving with the guard on .DID that once myself when I WAS inebriated ,I HAVEN'T USED THE CHEAP THROWAWAY SHAVERS for over 35 years there just no good for the face. but this is my third reviewing of this video .thank you Scoutcrafter I SEE YOU ARE NOW SLACKING ON THE VIDEOS BUT YOU ARE STILL DOING A GREAT JOB.EAGLE.P.S. I have a hard time to do 1 restoration a month ,and I never fully complete them scared I will ruin the tool.
amazing restoration on 1 dollar pliers mate keep them coming to humid and hot here on the West Coast of Scotland it was 80 deg c today our bodies arent ment for that heat keep em coming friend god bless
My parents do the cryptic crossword every day to keep their minds sharp. (Like the normal crossword except you have to decode the clues first!) (Cryptic as in cryptology!) Now they have me doing them too! And if u are getting neck/back pain u should consider elevating your grinder to a more ergonomic position (or sitting). Don't get me wrong - I get the image of the machinist in the shop hunched over the grinder is the classic method! But your back will thank u later! Take care of yourself SC! We need u to tell us what happens at age 75+!!! (Waiting eagerly for that video!)
Yesterday I decided to fix a pair of marked Taiwanese side cutters that I've had for years. They didn't cut very well and were uncomfortable to use. I guess they used to have plastic covers on the handles to cover the drop forge die seam. I didn't want to go full "ScoutCrafter" on them, but I needed them to be serviceable as they are a nice intermediate size. I'm an old guy who "knows it all (?)" but I used your standard attack plan to rejuvenate hand tools. Wire brushing, grinding/sanding forging marks, and the pivot lubrication got it all looking presentable. Fixing the handles really helped as the forge marks would cut into your hand when squeezed hard. ScoutCrafters method of sharpening the jaws made the cutters actually work like they are supposed to work. Sharpening one jaw and stoning a flat surface on the other jaw to be a platen for the sharp jaw. I held the side cutters up to the light to ensure I had ground the flat surface so the jaws closed completely. The flat grind is almost invisible without a magnifying glass. The side cutters now cut cleanly without having to squeeze the handles till you see spots. Thanks for showing how it's done Cheers from NC/USA
Taiwanese tools can really surprise you! I have some really wonderful tools from Taiwan. I never was a tool snob as I can see the quality in tools from anywhere, or the lack there of! LOL =) Thanks!!!!!!!!!
Believe me, at 60, I know exactly how you feel. At least you made it to the shower. I wouldn't surprise myself if I wound up on the neighbor's lawn, showering in their lawn sprinkler, thinking I was in my bathroom....
Hi scout real job on those pliers, you sure got lucky whith the red handles being in good condition. Had a good laugh at your shaving story, as we get older we all do daft stuff, even if some people don't admit it. Lol. I'm 70 now and can tell you Scout it only gets better, or at least the stories we tell do,according to my family I'm growing older (DISGRACEFULLY ) ,and enjoying every minute, ha ha, .Hope your neck pain eases off, remember while ever your hurting ,your still living,Best wishes Stuart.
Been watching for a while now and you never disappoint with your vids. They have inspired me to do a lot of my own restorations of tools and such so thank you and keep up the great vids
Hey John, you will be shocked at how fast you become good at this hobby! Not to mention the satisfaction level is off the charts! I'm so glad you joined in the fun! Looking forward to seeing you in the next challenge! Thanks!!!!!!
The mistery plier is "Proto" brand... ,the story of the blade was great ..😂..You're still young. You are an old Man only when you'll find a shoe inside the refrigerator ...😂😜..
I love your work. Was there a USA on the inside of the pliers? I also noticed an interesting C on the Craftsman. When I started as a telephone lineman I received a brand new Klien 9" lineman pliers. They were stiff as a board - you couldn't get them to move. I used WD 40 to loosten up the rivet. They worked so smooth that the lead lineman took them away and gave me his old pliers. As an apprentice I had to go along with it to keep my job. If I only had his old pliers today... Thanks from Texas for the fun. :-)
YOu did FINE with the pliers and goofy things started happening to me from the 1st day right on down and arthur has been a big part for years and years. I shave with a brush and soap and an old injector razor about every other day. I used to have a beard so if it goes over I just mash harder. A blade lasts a year or more but I used to dry shave so no biggie. It can get a lot crazier so no worries. And the Sea Bee Uncle was an iron worker. The last job was on the Savannah River Plant in Aiken, SC. Then he came back here! Thanks SC and happy shaving tonight!
Well, memory is the second thing to go, I can't remember what is first.... Great resto on those pliers! Those Craftsman turned out better than new! Those iron pliers handles were protected from that tape! maybe someone with big hands needed the added grip? They turned out awesome. I like Widget Wednesday someone mentioned.....
ScoutCrafter , Great Video ! Funny and Entertaining ! Good Tips As Well ! 50+ You're Correct Things do Happen ! Klein is Probably Correct ! I had A Pair of those type Pliers Myself . I Used to Do Foundation Work When I Was Young.
Lovely!! Funny, but I started on the gas fitter pliers today - I was lubing the pivot for at least half an hour to get it cleaned!! Absolutely filthy..... I know what you mean about getting older 😂
inspired by you, got a pair of old stuck needle nose in a box, pretty much for free. wire wheel took the gunk off the stamping. Fulton Extra, Germany, Sears Robuck & Co. pretty great find in a great box. lots of goodies in it. thanks!
Wow, Scoutcrafty ! Huge Score right there ! Any time I remove a label & the glue stays behind I rub a thin layer of Peanut Butter on & In no time Glue's Gone ! Hope this Helped. Be Well, Friend ! ATB T God Bless
Perhaps to some the slips and gaffs by a friend or aquaintance are amusing bits of character. Spouses tend to have a different view. It might be concern for our well being or a protective feeling for a cherished companion. Wives especially begin to think that you are pushing their button just to see have far they can. 😆
senior moment with the razor...funny. let me share one, my uncle once used Palmolive shaving cream that the packaging looks like tooth paste to brush his teeth, better that then hemorrhoid cream. love your channel my friend
The "best" is yet to come, you will know you have arrived when you set out to do a project and before you get started something catches your eye that is amiss. Well you can't have that so now you set off to fix that problem, and low and behold here is something else amiss, Well you can't have that so now you set off to fix that problem. etc etc etc. Two days later you are back to your original project......... Now Scout you have arrived, and need to start making yourself notes to keep you on track........... Happens to me all the time. LOL
We seldom wear our glasses in the shower. Not seeing clearly is a perfect setup for mistaking a sharp edge on the cap for a blade edge. I wouldn't cut myself testing the edge with my thumb. There is a reason I don't shave in the shower anymore. I want to count to three on my nose and ears.
I was talking to my wife for a good 10 minutes or so when I said to her oh heck I can't find my mobile phone, Leo, she replied your speaking to me on it, she was visiting our daughter at the time, I could have kicked myself. Beautiful restoration, I just love pliers and spanners too.

People are creatures of habit and especially when you get older. If everything is the same no problem, something new, your eye sight is poorer so you cannot see things like plastic guards and a new design it could be part of the razor. You can understand people getting upset when routine is changed. The metalwork pliers with tape maybe some one used it on live electrical work and did not trust the red plastic to protect them. The biggest bug bare as you get older is small print on products and not using a contrasting colour.
Wait 'til you get to your 60's. Oh boy! They say the mind is the second thing to go. This was interesting and a nice restoration. I never knew those pliers were for iron workers. Those Craftsman's look like something from the 30's or 40's.
Lol, funny story about the razor. I use an old style safety razor. Great episode, i wish i knew about the lighter fluid trick 20 years ago....i hate the residual tape feel. Cheers
Came out awesome. Id like to know your thoughts on laser etching vs stamped makers marks. AvE did a segment on it and I tend to agree. I hate the laser etching of sizes or makers marks. It could be a great USA made tool. But you wouldnt know after a few years of use or resto.
Hey Scout, I had a funny story that related to your shaving tale, but I forgot what it was!Hmmmm, I’ll try to remember to think about what it was, if I think about it!
You can use petrol for electronics cleaning (like IPA) sir...Circuits, boards, phones etc. or u can use to find for over temp. components in circuits. cheers... sir...and good job as always...
Nice surprise under all that tape!! That shaving story was priceless, and the way you tell these stories and your camera reactions have me rolling every time ! HAH! By the way, have you watched the channel ''Bikemanforu''? I used to watch them (no longer make videos) and they used the 50/50 mix penetrating fluid. I guess its a very famous mix.
Aryan- that mix is unbelievable! I use it all the time! You need to make up a batch.. Only thing is you have to shake it before using because it tends to separate.
I am waiting for the day that you use a blackening agent on metal, instead of using a marker or making them shiny. I use 3M Adhesive Cleaner to remove residue. i.e. I peeled off a shipping label from a cardboard box and the sticky adhesive was still on the box. I wiped 3M Adhesive Cleaner on it and it was gone. I had to allow the solution to evaporate from the wet cardboard, but no damage. I could now give the box w/ contents to another person without my info attached.
Also. My grandfather has done masonry and concrete for his whole life. He always says how it's a bad idea to put rebar into concrete. He told me that concrete will always crack and when it happens with rebar, it just ends up worse.
Sorry to welcome you to the Arthritis Club, John. I'm afraid I do resort to pain management prescription drugs, it comes to us all if we need to get on with the jobs. Fortunately I still enjoy the benefits of our NHS health care in the UK and so [as a disabled person] I get my drugs free of charge. But all that aside, you've definitely made good on those bargain buys, and worked the 'new for old' magic again. I'm thinking of all the impoverished parts of the world where tools are at a premium. Shame that every old tool couldn't be restored and whole toolboxes supplied to the places that need them most.
Good restorations. The needle nose are perfect. I have a pair of Klien pliers that look like your concrete pliers except they have a bend on both ends. They were in a box of tools my son bought. I cleaned them up a little and found brazing on both ends. Can't tell if they were Brock or the bends were added. Do you know any thing about them. Thanks
