Grappling World Champion Garry Tonon was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder as a child, and often struggled with the condition. A turning point for Tonon came when he found martial arts, as a regular training routine helped him channel his energy and master his craft. Tonon now considers his ADHD a trait that makes him unique inside the cage, and is excited to show fans what he has in store for his second ONE Championship bout at ONE: REIGN OF KINGS in Manila.

Diagnosed a month ago at 37, MMA, has been a help for me. The focus required during a class helps so much. It silences my brain, even if it's only an hour. That is a relief. I never new of this guy, he would be a great role model for so many young guys with ADHD.

I know the feeling Gary. That’s why I run, if I don’t I won’t focus much at all. After being diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, the medications worked but made me a zombie. Exercise and exerting energy is what worked best and has better side effects

I struggle with ADHD as well. in college right now but starting martial arts in the summer. I am hoping I will become a professional fighter one day, I just hope my adhd will not get into my way of my career as it is very debilitating.

The worst situation is when you join a new club and the coaches don't know your situation. You're embarrassed to explain and when you get the wrong combinations they have a go at you for getting it wrong. Sorry for having ADHD guys.

Does he take meds or no?

Prolly not, I don’t think there’s a point unless you have school. No point in suppressing who he is. Schools kinda force you tho or your grades will tank

@@fumky4768 I wouldn't say it's pointless. Maybe for him since he's in a good environment for his ADHD, but I think if you're not in a great environment, medicine helps a lot.

@@jaimesilva1990 i changed my persepective on meds a lot during this past year, they can be life changing for some and a dtriment to others fs

@@fumky4768 Yeah it varies person to person. ADHD brains are different than normal people in 6 different regions. And also there are multiple chemicals that the ADHD brain has less of. Cause of this, everyone's is different

@@fumky4768 one day they'll be able to make medicine that goes specifically for each individual based on their brain. I think ADHD is having a hyperactive brain, it's good in certain environments or jobs.

His improvisational style works beautifully in Jiu-jitsu, but it will get him knocked out in MMA.

We just take longer to work, once we're good we'll be sick cos adhd people have naturally quick reflexes 🤣(at least that's what I'm telling myself)

I mess up all the time in my MMA class. When we are working on a technique, or a drill, I just won't be able to understand it. But our instructors really understand how to teach both Neurodiverse and Neurotypical people. It has helped me so much.
