One Fundamental Tip to Improve Your Painting Today

Today I want to talk about one fundamental tip or idea that can dramatically increase the engagement of your paintings. When we're painting, we're painting light. The bigger the difference between the light and the dark, the more dramatic the painting. And almost always, the more engaging. How you design the big value masses is fundamental to strong composition. I'll show you with a couple of examples here.

Ian! Your namesake hurricane took my car, my house and my studio when the eye of the storm passed over Matlacha, Florida. I’m 70. My wife 64. My driveway went from wet to chest high water in 10 minutes. We survived thanks to our neighbor and his 23 foot open boat. We were swept 15 miles north and finally made landfall in a mangrove. Sheltered under the root ball of an upturned tree for the night. Your video this morning lit up my eyes and mind with the pleasure I get from painting and… I’m starting to cry again.

it is sad to hear your story and I pray for you and your wife and everyone who it affected by this terrible Hurricane. My dear old Mum at 80 went through a very bad storm and her house was completely flooded out…I know what you are going through and it is and will be hard for a while. 8 years on Mum was still enjoying her love of life. Don’t look back, only look forward and I hope you will see there is light ahead. ❤

It’s very helpful to see your palette and the way you mix, the specific colours you select, the way you don’t clean your brush in between etc. Appreciate it.
@IanRobertsMasteringComposition
Glad you found that helpful Tom. The only thing I'd say is I clean the brush enough so that the new color I'm mixing is the color I want. Sometimes that means cleaning the brush really well (say shifting from warm to cool for example or needing a really clean hit of color) and sometimes just continuing with what you have on the brush because the new color is low intensity. Best wishes

I think it's so amazing how all creative arts have the same process. In sculpture, you start with the big marble mass, then carve out the big shapes and then you do details. When writing a script, you have a story outline, then the three act structure, then you do individual scenes. painting, its value masses sketch, then blocking it in on the canvas, and then you do finishing touches. Yet you still have people who want to do details first, and then fill out the rest of the painting. When you see the artistic process for what it is, it seems insane to start with detail first.
@srinivastatachar4951
@srinivastatachar4951 Год назад
Absolutely! That is the key to all good art, and composition and drama makes for great art! ========================================================================================================
@IanRobertsMasteringComposition
Exactly. Well said. A large part of that I think is "seeing" the big picture first which I think is a training to using the right brain which is its function. The left brain is more additive, so from that perspective it thinks adding all the parts, details, will eventually add up to a convincing whole. All the best
@IanRobertsMasteringComposition
Yes that's it isn't it. Best wishes.

I can’t tell you how many times I tell people about you and your Mastering Composition book and videos. Your method of teaching has turned on so many light bulbs for me. In fact a painting that won a wonderful second place last weekend was improved when I went for a meditative swim and asked myself some Ian Roberts questions.. the questions made me answer WHY after many hours did I STILL think the painting stank…composition, composition, composition. It lacked completion. Thankfully I figured it out with many of your lessons in my head… movement, directions, lines, light, shape etc… the judge said the composition is what drew him to the painting. Inside I was jumping up and down with glee. Finally GETTING it… not just instinctive and lucky guess. THIS time I made it work. Thank you many times ten!
@IanRobertsMasteringComposition
HI Alison, that is a great story and congratulations on the second place. Well done. And you said it, and the judge too, composition. All the very best .
