That was a lot of fun. I"m guessing it you'd get to a 2nd or even 3rd installment using this theme. That Wild Cherry number was a staple of garage bands for years and years given it's such a danceable tune. But I tell you what, whether you are playing the rhythm or lead part, you are working pretty hard for 4 to 5 minutes! (maybe longer if the dance floor is full!)
Spirit in the sky, by Norman Greenbaum. I always like that beginning riff. I think it was cool like I say Carl . You’re one hell of a guitar player. I love the way you do Jimmy page riffs, so cool you’re so good at it not just good just plain excellent.👍🏼👍🏼😄🎸😎
I found myself captivated by every short riff review, prompting me to reach for my guitar even on songs I thought I knew well. Your playing and, of course, these arrangements are truly impressive. Guitar, amp and talented hands
These are the tunes I grew up on! Every now and again, when I'm wandering through my mp3 list, I'll run across something like 'Mississippi Queen' (or any of the rest of the tunes in this installment) and grab my guitar and give it a whirl. Usually, I give up in disgust - 'cuz it just don't sound quite right. Everytime I see videos like this, it just gives me more ideas on HOW to make it sound right! Keep doing what you're doing!
Leslie West's vibrato and phrasing were off the charts. He was the real deal. A real BIG deal and he grew up a couple of neighborhoods over from me in Forest Hills Queens NY. RIP Leslie.
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY MY ALL TIME FAVORITE VIDEO OF YOUR'S... YOU ARE EXTREMELY INFORMATIVE AND ACCURATE.. YOUR PLAYING IS JUST ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL.... YOUR KNOWLEDGE IS RAZOR SHARP.. THANK YOU FOR UPLOADING THIS VIDEO... I LOVE ❤️ 😍 💖 LOVE THAT PARTICULAR GIBSON LES PAUL CUSTOM....
Really enjoy your videos. Your passion is infectious and your playing and tones are a joy to listen to. I also like that you pick less obvious tracks and focus on the merits. A gentle approach to YT guitar videos and you demo a sense of care and responsibility to your audience . Keep up the good work.
Glad you included GELdy... One of my all time faves.. I learned it last year.. I love the spy chord at the end of the progression and song ending... Jan Akkerman is so vastly underrated from Focus... I always thought of him as Jimmy Pages evil twin half LOL! They're so close yet different. Leslie West... one of my big influences.. Him and Jimi changed my life on the Woodstock soundtrack.. That soaring guitar solo he does in "Theme For an Imaginary Western" is like touching God to me. Felix Pappalardi's voice was just gold on that live recording... Free had a lot of great tunes.. "I'll be Creepin'" is one of my faves... The guitar parts are simplistic and unique.. like every part served it's purpose... Every song in this epi had some impact on me... I feel like I "Came back home" on this one... It's a stark reminder of where us Cleveland kids got our roots from. Thank you Carl for always keeping it real.. U da Man!
I wish I could send u my songs to tell me how a drummer comes up with such chords. I’m watching you learning the names of thing I naturally do to make actually songs. Turns out there rhyme and reason. Away and I’m glad you teach and examine and explain it for us all. It just sounds good and my hands do it. I imagine u understand
All Right Now has IMO one of the best solos ever. Not really hard to play, but man, he plays each note perfectly, and his sound and control is amazing.
Love this stuff, growing up with all these great hits in the 70's, and learning how to play these hits back then. There are so many one hit wonders, how about Golden Ear Ring "Radar Love"
Carl, really enjoyed these; I played guitar and was 18 in 1971. The long version of Green-Eyed Lady is extraordinary (and was never played on the attention deficit radio stations).
HUGE Free fan! So many great riffs that it's odd they only had one hit, but that's the way many great rock bands were in the 70s. I'd like to see an episode on classic riffs from Free. "I'm on Fire" by Dwight Tilley Band is a good one-hit wonder riff.
I'm always amused when the young'ns see these vids and are inspired to chase up the songs .. the music (generally) gets a well deserved new lease of life. Onya 👍😀
Climbing is such a kickass album. My dad remembered listening to that tune (along with “Theme For an Imaginary Western”) with his one of his older brothers (my uncle) back in '70 as a 13 yo.
Hey Carl! Nice selection and a very enjoyable (and informative) video... This is harder than I thought... A lot of songs that come to mind are from 2 or even 3 hit wonders... but I managed to get a half dozen together... for now :D 01/70 - *The Jaggerz* - The Rapper 01/70 - *T,Rex* - Bang a Gong (Get It On) 07/72 - *The Raspberries* - Go All the Way 06/73 - *The Stories* - Brother Louie 06/74 - *Rufus* - Tell Me Something Good 07/74 - *Cheech & Chong* - Earache My Eye I wanted to list Venus by *Shocking Blue* but it was released 2 months too early... I also wanted to list I Just Want to Celebrate by *Rare Earth* but it wasn't even their biggest hit; In fact, it was tied for second place... Cheers!
so glad to have lived in the days of Leslie West (turned 69 2022) watched him and Frampton do a live performance of; Mississippi Queen that was rock music thunderous
Wild Cherry was my very first concert. Speakin of one hit wonders, RamJam opened for em. 1977 in Parkersburg, WV...at the high school, no less. Sure wouldn't mind being 15 again, lol 😎
Carl, thx for the one hit wonder solos. One that just came to mind was in 1975-76 by the group Pilot. Can’t think of the song name, but it was really popular.
Carl, it would be very interesting for us if you could show us one day your guitar collection, which seems to be important in volume and quality. You could tell us why you chose all these guitars over the others, etc. You seem to be a Gibson guitarist more than a Fender one, or a mix of both. But there are many other great guitar companies; do you have any other brands of guitars other than the two most famous ones? Give us a museum tour of your guitar collection sometime!
Carl, this is fun. Could you have a discussion of why one hit wonders exist? Is it management, lack of talent, ghost writers, etc. The show 'that thing you do' comes to mind.
I love you doing these type of vids...and I subbed you. But could you also explain how you got the sound for these songs, that would be great. Thanks in advance. Love your channel.
I get a smile at your sheer joy playing your video's riffs. Here's some 70's OHWs for a follow on video(s), some aren't quite one hitters Spirit in the Sky Seasons in the Sun - get out that tremolo Black Betty Driver's Seat Ballroom Blitz Smokin' in the Boys Room Little Willy Chuck E's in Love Get Down Tonight Right Place Wrong Time Long Cool Woman Easy Livin' Walk Away House of the Rising Sun - Frijid Pink FYI, an awesome acoustic cover, check out Frog Leap Studio's "Play that Funky Music" or "Sultans of Swing". Thanks Carl.
Great collection of hits! One minor comment, the header said Paul Rodgers, who had several hits with Bad Company, but I agree that Free had only one big hit, even if they had many good songs and many great riffs!
Hi Carl, another Cleveland rocker here. Just found your channel and love it. We have some great musicians like yourself from here. Check another Cleveland boy Tom Bukovac and his site Homeskoolin. He is and has been one of Nashville’s top studio guitarists. His fans will enjoy your site too. I’ll spread the word
Thanks brother!! Tom is truly a GOAT. I’m in absolute awe of that guy!!!!! What a master musician. Please send him my total love and respect. He’s the humbler!
Hello Carl, a very instructive and well-done episode. Congratulations. But a little correction: Focus is definitely not an one-hit-wonder-band if you are considering great iconic songs like "Sylvia". Moreover, Jan Akkermann is one of the most advanced Jazz-Rock-Fusion-guitar-players in the world.
@@CarlBaldassarreMusic You have me reminiscing about my youth in the 70's LOL! How about Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo by Rick Derringer which had a great guitar riff and Jim Dandy by Black Oak Arkansas. Both had significant radio play that they never duplicated.
@@CarlBaldassarreMusic I saw The Babys on the Broken Heart tour in 1978 from the front row. It was my first real concert, and Wally Stocker’s and Michael Corby’s riffs were amazing. Wally was a very tasteful lead guitarist.
Kind of hard to call Free a one hit wonder. Granted they had one huge hit but Walk in my Shadow, Mr Big, Wishing Well, the Stealer, Be My Friend, Ride A Pony..
yep....Carl...definately Hocus pocus from Focus for me....it was something "different" back then...you could tell their classical tuiton...and 2nd "free"....i saw them back then as the openers for "colloseum II" and they were booed...!!...heady times....😆😅 colloseum might be some group to look into...good quality music.....
"Focus"---wow---and you did the vocal part too. Why credit Rodgers, not Rogers(one of my fav singers) when it was Kossof that cast the guitar magic(you left out the lead guitar part)which is the best part of the song. One of the best leads ever. Argent---yawn.Don't get sloppy with quantity over quality videos---you're one of the only ones with some class left.
Wild Cherry is not a one hit wonder!!! They had two top ten hits and another that was a top 40. I believe there were two more that were top 100. Stop copying other incorrect lists. Many of these lists are really “I only remember these hits” lists.
I pointed out that my selections were there biggest hits that most people know them for. But I respect that band (and I’m personal friends with some of them!!). Only love and a big shout out of RESPECT was ever intended.
