One rod. One lure. One hour! This week's commando-style mission is to catch a fish with an 8cm Savage Gear Bleak imitation. Jon has less than 60 minutes to tempt a predator on a really cold and wet afternoon session on the Oxford Canal. Enjoy!
This great little stretch of canal is controlled by Banbury & District AA with day tickets available from local tackle shops and on the bank.

These videos you post Jon are very enjoyable. However, it's often the case that I reach for my jumper. Just watching them makes me feel cold. Cant wait to see the warm weather posts coming. thanks for the brave attitude towards facing good old British weather, we, the viewers are grateful.

Hi Jon that was a brilliant effort in nasty conditions! It was interesting that on the pole and chopped worm you couldn’t catch so it must have been rock hard but your perseverance paid off in the end. Regards Bill

Haha, nice vid! I was the guy in the white van when you netted the little jack pike! Was fishing next to you. Good zander in that spot, although recently invaded by otters!

Fair play to you Jon, good to see match men embracing the the predator side of fishing and braking the stereotype that matchmen hate predators, keep up the good work

Hi Jon, enjoying these videos. Just wondered if that is fluorocarbon you are using and at what breaking strain. Also have you ever been bitten off by a pike? Cheers Tom.
@JonArthur
@JonArthur 4 года назад
Yes fluorocarbon, anything from 3lb to 6lb. Im only fishing light jig heads and dropshotting etc and the main desirable target for me is always perch of any size. The jacks and zander just happen along. I cannot remember being bitten off on the canal. Obviously if I was primarily after pike a wire trace would be advised, but you hit takes instantly with this style of light lure fishing so you shouldn't be deep hooking many fish if at all.

Well done for persevering. Target the margins....in front of your feet.....structure is key . Leave your match head at home and go out with a different mind set for lure / predator fishing. PS, if not catching, change jig head weights and or lures, use slow / fast retrieves. think outside of the box. Rove along the bank.

Ha ha, no match head on at all, just grabbing an hour’s enjoyment on the bank. Sorry for not wearing camo! 😬 It’s way too shallow and clear down the edge on this specific stretch at the mo and comparing notes with fellow lure anglers all the takes seem to be coming in the deeper channel lately. It will hopefully be different once this cold snap passes. I’m just having some fun chucking a specific lure about for a very short time. With more time of course I wouldn’t hesitate to adjust so many things and I also carry two rods when I have that luxury. Dare I say that I cringe whenever I hear the word ‘structure’ as it just sounds like a buzz word plucked from bass fishing. Mr Crabtree would certainly never have said it, ha ha! I'll just stick to finding Bs: things like boats, bullrushes, branches, bridges, basins and those lovely lovely bushes! ;-) Enjoy your fishing. 🙂

@@JonArthur Bass fishing yes, good point and I have personally done plenty of that in Zimbabwe. Yes we have dams ,lakes, structure and 3 types of Bass species in Zim. Enjoy your match fishing. :-)

What setup in turms of the rod and reel
@JonArthur
@JonArthur 4 года назад
That specific combo was a Daiwa Sweepfire 2000 reel with a Savage Gear Parabellum 1-5oz rod. Very sensitive and lightweight and much more fun than the pokey things I started off with.

Your landing net is so small!! Low expectations???
@JonArthur
@JonArthur 4 года назад
Yep! I was primarily just targeting perch and even if I caught a pike or zander I wasn't expecting anything more than a 5lb fish at the absolute most! Happy to just catch a tiddler on this session! :-)
