This detailed 1922 tour of the Borough of Lewisham visits shops, tramways and the Ravensbourne and Quaggy rivers. We see the long-gone Chiesman Brothers department store opposite the Salisbury pub - now the site of one of south east London's largest police stations. On the way we encounter a bottling plant, country dancing practice and lots of disappeared shops.

Seeing the children, makes you think how many had lost a father or brother in the war.

Thank you for sharing this little gem! I grew up in Lewisham during the 1970s and 80s. It used to have a lovely shopping centre there with so many shops. I can still remember the famous clock in the shopping centre that would chime at midday and the most amazing puppets/statues used to appear and music would play. Sadly like most of London, the landscape and communities have changed drastically due to Councils 'regenerating' swathes of London. The London of today is not the London of my youth.....and not for the right reasons.

A lot of Lewisham though was a victim of the Blitz. It was particularly badly hit :(

I remember going in Cheismans in the 1970s as a little girl. I loved the toy section and seeing Father Christmas in his grotto! In the 1980’s I remember going in the cinema called studio 6 and 7. Also in the 1990’s wasn’t there a shop called Sandersons where the Obelisk was?

I like watching this old footage of a once great nation we had. How clean and decent it would have been back then, but like most things in life it does not last.

Fascinating film to watch ! My grandparents lived in Thurston Road until 1970. I used to visit them frequently and have fond memories of the area as I remember it !

Thank you for this! I lived my first 40 years in Lewisham. I've done a lot of research into the history of the area but never seen any actual film though!

I lived in Molesworth Street as a child (early sixties) with my grandparents. The house was knocked when they built the shopping centre years ago. Thanks for sharing this 👍

Seems like your going back in time, all the people in this film are all deceased. Very eerie when you think about it.

I was born in Lewisham in 1966. I so remember playing in that drain Quaggy - sending plastic soldires/sailors to glory and adventure in various boats . Cheesemans store ? Loved it - not because of the store but thought it was a silly name . i was 6 when left london Have been back since -couple of times - retired police offcer- Cheesemans is a mega police station now. Lewisham is Pretty grim now

We have a video of cycling in Catford around the turn of the twentieth century but it doesn't include any streets - based in a park. We'll publish it later in the year

i find all this so fascinating to compare the then and now ,just think if the people then could see how much the world has changed ,no doubt when i am dead and buried the Lewisham i knew will be even more changed ,but i fear not for the better //we have all been boxed in and become solitary ,which is not good for the human spirit ,that's why most people these days are losing it, we don't communicate like we used to //A I TECH has taken something precious away from humanity , you know what i mean /

Fantastic! Where do you get the footage? Would love anything you have up Granville Park or Pagoda Gardens to the Heath! The Blackheath Society is a great source of photos for Lewisham too, though obviously more centred on Blackheath.

Judging by the state and volume of tower blocks that have been thrown up, I wouldn't be suprised. Lewisham has always been a bit experimented with. Remember the failed Lewisham 2000 project?
