'Once you overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.'
This is how director Bong Joon-ho, director of 2019s acclaimed Parasite, honoured every foreign language masterpiece that had been snubbed before. Today on Beyond Ghibli, I'm discussing my own favourites from Asian cinema, and explore how Parasite's success is changing the way foreign media is being created and consumed, both at home and abroad.
00:00 Introduction - And the Oscar goes to...
03:25 KOREA - The Handmaiden
08:32 The reductive stereotype of Weird Japan
10:20 JAPAN SIDE A - Linda Linda Linda
11:46 JAPAN SIDE B - Swing Girls
13:54 THAILAND - Bad Genius
17:22 Conclusion

This is a superb video essay. I have been sold on foreign language film for the past 20-30 years, and regularly find my yearly Top 10 Lists half filled with gems from Korea, Japan, China, France, Germany, Italy, Denmark etc. Asian films are especially excellent. I can't tell you how many times I have had a conversation with someone fed up with the quality of movies "these days". My answer is always the same... If you want to see twice as many great films -- watch more foreign films. I would argue you might have as much as three times as many great films. Great work. Subscribed!

Happy to see someone talk about the importance of how being able to read subtitles opens up so much media. It sucks to some extent that it took Parasite to really open it up to the mainstream. I feel before it you had to already enjoy anime and or have been shown subtitled films from friends who speak more then one language to find some them. I know i was lucky to check out subtitled anime really early on, early Jackie Chan/Jet Li films combined with a family member needed subtitles because of their hearing that made watching something with subtitles just normal for me. Also color me surprised that the "The Great Passage" also got a live action series (noticed it at the end), for a series about dictionaries it was a wonderful drama.

You got me with the clip at 12:20. Completely unexpected but absolutely hilarious. It's a shame when people fear they won't understand foreign comedies when there are definite examples of things such as this that can surpass the language barrier or showcase that other countries don't need to rely on overtly crude humor. Love this video, makes me want to explore a lot of the foreign media I've been missing out on!

As someone who is a huge fan of Foreign Cinema, I want to say that this is a beautiful done video essay on Foreign films. Ever since I watched movies from different countries in Asia such as Battle Royale and A Tale of Two Sisters; it's really great that Foreign cinema is taken more seriously thanks to the success of "Parasite". It shows that not only filmmakers from different cultural backgrounds are given opportunities to tell their stories but also film fans can have a chance to expand their tastes in film. Also thanks for mentioning "The Handmaiden" and "Swing Girls". Those were such great movies in general.

This video is a stroke of genius as a love letter to any kind of love & appreciation to foreign media works imo. I really believe the majority of the world pretty much already breaking that subtitles barriers, but it's indeed something else when it comes to Hollywood as a leading industry in popular films & shows. As someone who basically watch movies/shows/animations with subs throughout my whole life, I am so glad that it seems even common American audiences are now more open to the idea of foreign media a lot more even than Hollywood. Let's not deny ourselves that they are pretty late about it LOL

Thank for covering Thai films, it is really rare to see a RU-vidr speak about Thai films in depth. Even in Thai films community itself. As a Thai moviegoers, I recommend if you want to watch more Thai movie that can or in the same league as Bad Genius I will recommend 3 that I think you can easily find: 1. The Tin mine, it is a flop at first but slowly it become regarded as one of the best. 2. Where we belong, For me this films speak for my generation of Thai with a message hidden inside and last shot that sink into my memory to this day. 3. Happy old years, directed by a well known indie director. This is more direct speaking than the last but it an experience of emotion to watch it nonetheless. I really appreciate your work. I really enjoyed this! I am a person who has, up until recently, really resisted watching live action (American) media, focusing on cartoon and anime, but as a 26 year old I am rather embarassed by this. I often find that I am not the target demographic of most films and series for one reason or another, so I find them to have stories and characters that I can't relate to. Recently I have been dipping my toes into live action foreign film and television series and I am realizing that my preference of cartoons and anime does not stem from immaturity, but a desire to see unique characters and stories being told, and it has been extremely liberating! Thank you for all the recommendations, I will be watching many of the movies shown in this video.

In America, they only make non-foreign-language films. Foreign-language films are very hard to make, obviously, because you have to invent a foreign language, instead of using the usual language. But the truth is, cinema is a foreign language, a language created for those who need to travel to the other side of life. Good night." quote by Leos Carax, director of the film Holy Motors. I think this quote fits perfectly with the theme of this video. There are so many worlds to be explored in cinema and limiting yourself to only one of these worlds would be a shame.
