Nice video - I've had to essentially bin my Lark 150 - it must have an irregular sample rate which causes audio to desync in mp4s. First I thought it was the fault of the mmhmm app I was using, but now I've noticed it also happens recording sessions on Zoom. I don't have the issue with a USB mic or the internal mic on my mac. Also, the first months it was fine, but after about 6 months I've started to notice battery drain issues that others have reported. It doesn't turn itself off automatically when you replace in the charge box, which now means if you forget to manually switch off you find all units without charge the next time you take it out.
Thanks! Shame to hear you had to bin it. Regarding the batteries I’ve noticed the connectors are a bit sensitive, but by simply jiggling the units a bit they switch off and start charging.
Looking several reviews of several products wireless audio recording. What is often missing: * How easy is it to export the recorded audio to your PC/Mac? * Is there a backup recorded audio on the transmitters ? * How easy is it to accidentally turn the transmitter of (in a pocket) * How easy is it to detach the attached microphone (also, e.g. if the transmitter in the speakers pocket) In most reviews those infos are missing, or just partially added. Please include such info in the future, thank you!
100m mark test, I have this system. the key to 100m is direct line of sight, not movement or non-movement. When you turned around on the scooter at 100 m and it reconnected is when direct line of site was restored. i tried this and proved this case, at 100m turn and face away with the transmitter blocked by your body- signal will be lost. Turn to face so the transmitter is not blocked by your body and has direct line of sight and it works fine for me. In the car, again the metal of the car blocks the signal. I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. Keep obstacles from getting between transmitter and receiver and this kit works amazing.
Exactly I was just about to comment this lol^ The range these mics claim is "unobstructed" & your body was blocking the signal between the transmitter and the receiver when you were walking away from the camera. Has nothing to do with the movement
Good, clear review. Like you mate, I also don’t like the footprint of the mic box. I would also use the lav mics plugged in. I think if it was cut in half size size, the footprint would be better. But if course that would affect battery life. The no Mac update is a killer right now. I would purchase this today, if the Mac update was there. 🤷♂️ Great job on the video!
Cheers mate! The Mac issue is a bit annoying. However, I use it a lot and the missing features you can easily add in post. Hopefully they’ll sort out this issue soon!
Hi Paul, Thank you very much for the review. I momentary own the Boya WM-8 Pro but I am not very satisfied with the audio quality. So after seen your review I will order the Hollyland.
To be honest, I can't really notice a difference from your usual audio, maybe it's because I'm using the phone speakers to watch this video. But it does sound really good. Also, you're hair is looking great today! 👌🏼😆
Hey man! I can’t really hear a difference either, and my usual shotgun mic is an expensive RØDE. Quite impressed by the Lark 150. My hair surprises me every day! 😜
Hey Paul. Run the demo version of Windows Parallels on your mac. Do the update and then delete. It's a faff, but it works! What's the general range like indoors? Great video, thank you.
Hey! I’ve been using them for months now and have never had a problem regarding battery. However, after using them for some months I noticed I had to push them slightly into the charging box to charge properly. This might be the reason people complaining about the battery draining out. Hope this helps ;)
Hi Paul I love your hair a little to the right 😂 I have a rode mic attached to my Canon m50. Do you have any suggestions or a video on how to have clean audio? I can hear some 'gain' noise or white noise in the background when editing. Thx so much and awesome review as always 😊
Hey! My hair says thanks! 😜 You probably have to clean the audio in post, which is normal. Depending on editing software, but in Adobe Audition you would find a couple of seconds in your audio where you don’t talk and capture the noise. Once this background noise is captured you apply it to the whole audio tracks. The background noise will then be gone. If you use another software I’d google that and add noise removal in your search. Hope this helps 😊
I bought these but how would you cope with the batteries running low if they are built into the transmitter. it's not like I can charge them on set. or we would have to break. If i was on a shoot how long would they last
Anyone having an issues with the case losing charge? My case will lose charge withing 3-4 days when stored away. I've updated to latest firmware which was supposed to fix the issue with no luck.
This unit has been a nightmare for me. I too am a Mac user so trying to upgrade the firmware was a two day ordeal. It still didn't work so they had me ship it to Texas (AT MY EXPE NSE???) for repair. The RMA tracking system is pathetic - it makes no sense and was never updated. I finally got a new unit. Used it on a job and the 6th interview I used it for, it would no longer pair. I've reset all four components - nothing. I would never trust this unit for professional work. And, it's a shame because the form-factor, sound quality, etc are surprisingly good for the money.
Hey Matt! Damn! That’s horrible! I’ve been using it for half a year now without any issues, even without a firmware update. Where did you buy it from? Hollyland is a pretty solid company and should sort you out if you still have issues…
@@PaulHeimlund I bought mine through Amazon in February of this year (2021). It never inspired confidence - the battery charge status was always off, sometimes drastically. It seemed to work fine (except the battery issues) for 6-7 months of limited use then all this started. I have to say that the customer service aspect of dealing with them has been awful. I can pretty confidently say that I'm done with Hollyland, even if they manage to get me a unit that performs as it should. the fact that my original unit failed, the ridiculous firmware update hoops you have to jump through, the 24 hour wait for each customer service response, the vague - borderline unintelligible replies. It's not worth the hassle. I'll go back to a Diety system. It's bigger but it works and sounds better.
@@PaulHeimlund now they're telling me I need to update my firmware so I'm off to find a PC, that's running Win-10, so I can download a file from some sketchy google drive url. Worst customer support ever.
Had the same problem with the new Lark Max . Seconded time I used it , it wouldn't pair. Sent it back to BH Photo . Worked great but unreliable for any kind of work.
@@HotBrassandBullets After going through three units, I ultimately determined that plugging the Lark 150 into a recorder that had 48v power enabled was the problem. I was running a 3.5mm splitter cable from the Line Out to a pair of XLR adapters plugged into my Zoom F6. If 48v power was enabled on the channels it was plugged into, it would kill the receiver. Hollyland never actually admitted it was a problem and, to my knowledge, they've never addressed the issue with any firmware updates. I have a Lark150 that works now but have found the audio quality to be so bad that I really only keep it in my case as a back up.
Great review. I had the Rode Go and whenever the person speaking on camera turned around the audio would cut out. Does this drop audio of the talent turns around ?
The "issue" you mentioned isn't as bad as the mic not syncing up. This has been a big issue is anyone else experiencing the units not pairing when taken out the case?
I can't say about the most recent units, but I have not had this issue with them not pairing up, outside of one mike was in mute. My issues are that it's easy to knock the receiver into stereo or safety track when mounting/unmounting onto your camera and the mute if you accidentally hold in the on/off button. The other issue is, the charge case seems to run out sooner than it should and it needs to be recharged. I don't use the mics that often as I don't shoot every day and at the moment, the turbo charger is charging one of the GoPro batteries so this evening, I should be able to plug the Lark in to charge.
Am I the only one who has the "phone mode"? Also when I switch back and forth from the "phone mode" to "mono" the screen has some glitches and the screen turns grey
I can't get rid of static sound. I put my camera -12dB and mic output 8(i tried 0~10) still static sounds come out from video i made. Do you habe any idea? I need some help...
It sounds like a faulty cable or input. Try changing the cable and make sure it’s connected properly. Sometimes you have to really push the cable hard on your camera audio input…
If you want to get the best signal for distance you should clip it to your pants pocket not in front if you. You definitely gave a great signal mire than 100m
@@PaulHeimlund Static noise, even when I set up the output volume from 2 to 20 and the noise is very high. Idk maybe my unit was faulty. I've tried using the lav mic too. Both have the same result. High noise.
@@oscargastelum9261 I think the noise floor on this mic is very high. I've compared this to my Aputure a.Lav mic. Far more better sounding than the Hollyland.
Do not buy these! After 2 uses the charging box stopped charging the RX and TX. I did a reset like the support page instructed and it still doesn't work, and their support is no good.
Is your apple computer not a "PC"? = personal computer? like Asus , acer, Dell etc PC? Between the brands that are different than apple computer is the operations system. All other brands runs with Windows. Apple runs with Mac OS. So both systems, their devices are PC. The same can say with the Cellphone: Iphone like Samsung Galaxy S21 and other brands are Cellphones Smartphone. The same can you say with the TABLETS: Apple Tablets is Ipad, Samsung Galaxy Tabs S7 etc... But both are Tablets
