I attempt to get spark on my 1978 Yamaha dt250 for the last time. This dirt bike has been a pain to get spark on. Will I finally be able to get spark and start it up for the first time? #Yamaha, #Vintage, #250cc,

With an air cooled 2 stroke engine of that vintage cold, I'd say a compression of 80 psi is ample for starting.....and I was right. Clearances of that magnitude were common and with a slightly better fuelling solution than your current arrangement!.....and of course, a properly working throttle, I am glad to see it running. Well done, keep finding these and I'll keep watching.

@@RamblinGarage a few months ago i found a suzuki ds80 that was torn apart sitting in a shed for almost 20 years, i cleaned the carb and the rust out of the cylinder, threw it together and it fired first kick, i beat the crap out of that bike and never had a single problem, those bikes are bulletproof

@@andrewb232 that's awesome, you literally cannot beat the old stuff.. This Aermacchi of mine was sitting in someone's closet for 13 years, I got it, cleaned the carb, new spark plug and it fired. The rings were pretty worn out after that, it would run on 30 psi, but not very well and it was just tired, so I rebuilt the top end. It runs perfect now.

With the fuel tank in that bad of condition; on the Yamaha DT250, I hope you purchased and followed directions to coat the tank with sealer. If you want to keep that cycle running without plugging up the carburetor, coat the fuel tank properly. Another thing that works well to clean off all the rust inside fuel tank is BBs instead of the nuts and bolts. Also easier to get out of the fuel tank when you are done with the Vinegar bath. If need be, you can vacuum the BBs out.The BBs can be purchase at Fleet Farm in the guns and ammo area. I use KBS Coatings system purchased from Amazon. It work fantastic when you follow the instructions. I'm working on second 1982 Yamaha Vision (XZ550) restore and coating fuel tank with KBS Coating. Cool to watch your videos. I used to own a 1988 DT 400; which was a great Enduro for on-road and off-road.

To save a few bucks on any engine that you've taken apart you can reuse the head and base gaskets if they're not torn or burnt by spraying a light coat of any color enamel spray paint on both sides of gasket.allow to fully dry.spray a 2nd heavyish coat and allow that to fully cure... Install and torque in increments to proper torque value...

Always change the condenser, they cost pennies and can ruin the spark power. Like the Yammie outboard I have, with magnetos, one of those coils is for charging the battery, the other for the spark. So only one should go by the condenser. The other goes to a diode and the battery. The twin outboard has a negative and positive secondary coil, because the primary coil, the one behind the magnets, gets a pulse when the magnet north passes it, and the magnet south. In your case it is only one pule you care about, and one set of points. But, you might have got, by accident, a negative secondary coil, instead of a positive. But if not, the secondary coil is suspect. And well done getting parts, my 1978 Yam 40 twin outboard you cant get coils for! I had to track some down motorbike coils!

@shartne
@shartne 3 года назад
It would not have been such a pain the arse if Amazon would have sold you a working coil in the first place. It really needs the pipe gasket and the throttle cable. I think it is worth new rings and cylinder gasket and head gasket. You can always paint the plastics. Red Kote is the Best solution for gas tanks. Clean it then let it dry then swish some Red Kote around in it and dump out the excess then let it dry for a long while then wala as good as brand new tank. Its about 30 dollars for a Quart of Red Kote. But you can do more than one gas tank with it. Maybe 3 or 4 tanks. 250 yamahoppers are great bikes. It should have some power to it. And now that it has run a little bit maybe it has a few more pounds of compression after whats left of the rings seated in. By the way this was a very enjoyable video to watch you struggle though the problems of this old vintage bike. But hey drama is what makes the videos even better. Now its a Saga you are a motor cycle mechanic Hero. Good job and good thing for that viewer who told you about new coils from Amazon being dead. I would have never guessed that was the problem just figured the new coil should work and was not the problem? wow.

Coming along nicely. Those bikes have notoriously lousy ignition spark strength.Spark plug selection is key.I have a 79 MX 175 that would only run with a particular old plug. Wouldn't run with any new plug of any heat range. Some tricks I used from my RD 350 days, because an RD 350 is just two 175's ganged together. I run a K&N pod type filter on the end of the carb, which provides too much air.Drill out the pilot jet, or replace it if it has standard Mikuni jets.Drill or go up 5 sizes on the main jet. Run B- 9 range plugs instead of B- 8's. Going hotter on the plugs ain't no good.Fiddle with the air screw for a minute, and now it has the sweetest, smoothest little power band. This motor needs a modern chassis.And of course, ditch the oil pump and run 50 to 1 Yamalube R.

Yo Joe! I wouldn’t do any more than 24 hours on that vinegar bath man. 1 week and that pin hole will be a pen hole. Haha. Seriously though, that stuff will not stop eating away and eat until the metal is all gone. Be sure to do a bath in baking soda for an equal amount of time after the vinegar bath to help neutralize the acid effect. Otherwise, the vinegar will continue to eat the metal even after it’s been drained. Also on them wool pads......the blue stuff in them is soap. Just add water and they work great. No WD needed. Save your WD and you can scrub for miles. Keep up the great work man. 😎

Full strength full fume Easy Off brand oven cleaner is your best friend for spray paint removal,don't use the cheap stuff as it'll burn the original pint and turn aluminum dull grey and but sometimes works for rust removal on steel... 1 part paint thinner to 2 parts BOILED linseed oil mixed well and rubbed into plastic and paint helps to rejuvenate both and bring back some color from faded... I'd pre mix my gas and oil and forget about tht throttle controlled pump as they were known to quit and kill an engine ... Apple cider vinegar for 24 hours usually will clean all rust from inside a tank and POR makes a most excellent tank sealer as well as Red Kote which usually seals smaller holes and pinholes...Avoid Kream at all costs...
