This is almost strictly a "departures" update to the OLTL "Banner" opening; only one new actor was added and only one existing image was changed (which may be for the best, as you'll read below)
Departing Version 1: Stephen Markle (Mel Hayes) Clint Ritchie (Clint Buchanan) Sonia Satra (Barbara Graham) and Roger Howarth (Todd Manning). They are all replaced with existing images seen in Version 2.
Version 2 says goodbye to the demoted Patricia Mauceri (Carlotta Vega) Laura Bonarrigo (Cassie Callison) and Howarth/Todd. While Mauceri and Bonarrigo's images are replaced with existing images seen in Version 1, Howarth/Todd's image is replaced with that of Mark Derwin (Ben Davidson).
I remember not being thrilled with this addition; at the time Ben had no connections to anyone on the canvas other than Viki (played by Erika Slezak). But obviously, before long Derwin/Ben became prominent in Llanview.
Satra/Barbara never returned to OLTL. Mauceri/Carlotta remained a regular OLTL presence until being replaced in 2009 for a specific reason; she-and all other regular recurring performers-briefly returned to "Banner" during OLTL's Live Week in 2002. Markle would make a handful of appearances as Mel's ghost 2008-10. Ritchie brought back Clint a few times before retiring in 2004.
Bonarrigo/Cassie made guest appearances 2001-04 and again in 2010. As was his norm, Howarth/Todd continued to pop in and out of Llanview-and the "Banner", "Tiles" and "Dance" openings-through its 2013 cancellation.
As we covered in a previous video, Bonarrigo/Cassie's "removal" barely qualifies as a removal, it was so poorly edited. In Version 2, Nathan Purdee (Hank Gannon)'s image now appears where Bonarrigo/Cassie had been-except much of the previous image is still clearly visible. The flickering candles, the wall, even Bonarrigo/Cassie's moving right arm can all be seen with Purdee/Hank.
This editing snafu remained all the way until the December 1999 update.
Ultimately, 10 actors appeared in both versions of this "Banner" update (which HAS to be a record), meaning only 22 total were on contract at the time. So why again was Mauceri demoted? She appeared nearly as much as contract actors. Was OLTL that broke? Did Mauceri seek freedom?
Also changed is Robin Strasser (Dorian Lord)'s inset pic in Version 2. Previously, Strasser/Dorian had two separate insets: in Version 1 she's angrily throwing something down, and in Version 2 she's packing outfits.
Here, both insets feature the angry throw-which is much more in character.
