I’m an electrician and found this fascinating, I work with many joiners that are always asking for help when erecting big timbers, the little supports you use to help yourself are genius. Great build.
Excellent quality build. I see so many people skimp out and it's a shame as they were so close to a good build. This will last for years and will provide countless hours of man zen! Great! 👌
Damn, I'll try to build a big garden shed and workshop like this. I had no clue how to plan the material. It scares me a little bit. Thanks for the lesson.
Fair play to you completing that single handedly! That's a great job :) I've been thinking about something similar as a workshop alongside the garage .. I'm torn though as I suspect the letter of the law says I'll need planning (due to the concrete base making it a non-removable structure); and I don't think ~1100Kgs of Bridgeport Mill will sit on a timber shed floor very happily! :)
cheers, planning is pretty straight forward though to put in and there is plenty of advise on the planning portal. If your garage is in the back garden you might be ok, but if beside or in front of the house then you will need planning.
@@trollmanrs it's in the back garden fortunately 👍 previous owners already extended the house and built the garage under planning perm, so not sure I'd get permission for even more stuff 😁 that said, they also got planning to knock the 6x5 garage down and built a 3 bed dormer bungalow down there (lapsed now), so there's always hope!
Very good job looks very solid and definitely not going anywhere, the base is concrete i guess how different is it to make a base for a shed or garage like that one also i have that mitre saw stand it is amazing i would of got a evolution saw too but i had a Mcallister one already before got a stand. Great time lapse as well.
Thanks Callum, you are correct the base is concrete as it has to take the weight of my Land Rover. some people still use concrete for a shed base but prob not as thick as I used here, or you could use thick timber beams and then some sheet material.
I’m looking at doing one in my front garden, did the planning department give you any grief? My front garden is huge and bac’ is tiny so wanted somewhere for the kids! Great build
Hi, No the planning department were very good, ni issues even though my poxy neighbour complained about lack of light for a window 10m away ! Good luck
That's an absolutely smashing job. So much better than a concrete one and more secure. Did you think about using plastic shingles, just curious thats all.
Thanks, no tbh I like the look of the ashault shingles and that's what the American's use on their houses so they must be good. I love the look of the Cedar, like you say so much better than a concrete one in so many ways.
@trollmanrs: Amazing work! Will you please share some tips as to how you would screw timbers into a concrete floor? I have a concrete floor and want to build a timber garage.
Thanks, I used concrete bolts, drill a suitable sized hole then use a socket and rachet to tighten the bolts. You can see me doing it in one of my video's.
Thanks, I have never built anything like this before I just gave it a go and it came out ok. I used to be into Old Fords, but like Land Rovers, Alfa's & Fords :-)
brilliant job mate, iv got a 20*19ft brick garage its only single skin and not in the best of condition. been thinking for a while to take it down and do this. what was the cost on the wooden materials?
Thanks, If you insulate it well a timber garage will be better than a single skim brick one. Not sure on cost of just the wood, but I will be doing a video on the costs very soon. so stay tuned ..
Love it ..doing the same thing at my place also on front garden area I also had to get planning, don’t need building regs but like mine yours is within 2 metres of boundary ..I’m told has to be fireproof in those areas did you here about this at all ?
cheers, it did feel like 4 years at some points !! Camera date reset a few times to default, but I sstarted in Feb 2020, and was finished by Spet 2020, with only working at weekends mainly. Oh and I had to wait 3 months for the cladding due to COVID. Good luck with your build
Wow what an amazing job done there!! I also want to build a garage this or next year. Planning something similar as you did. Maybe little bigger and higher to fit a lift would be cool. Do you mind to share your plans of your build to have an idea how to build things like this? Will be my first Project like this too. Again well done! Cheers from Germany 🇩🇪
Thanks, it was just under 12k ish. I will be doing a video on the breakdown of ALL costs right down to screw/nails. Coming soon so don't forget to subscribe.
Fantastic build pal. Amazing that you did it all on your own. I am looking to do something similar myself but I'm afraid of unforeseen costs spiralling out of control. Would it be rude of me to ask a ball park spend on this project. Alan
Hey Alan, Thanks for the comments. Check out this video as I have fully documented everything I spent on the build; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_uXY6eOezqI.html
Awesome job is that shingle roofing any good?i suppose you can't really say it's great till it's been up a few year's also did you plasterboard or anything inside?
cheers, the shingle tabs are very good quality, obviously there are different types available. It's been up all over the winter and still looks like new. Check out the playlist and you will see me fitting out the inside as well as epoxying the floor. :-)
Excellent job! 😎 I’ve just done something very similar, I used the damp membrane on the underside of the walls as well. Do you get any water coming in from under the walls?
Thanks you. I did it one area, and it was because my concrete pad is bigger then the building so water was pooling and then running in. I used some butyband flashing tape all around and that solved it.
@@trollmanrs Thanks for getting back to me! I've run some sealant around the perimeter and it appears ok now, but i think i'll do the tape aswell. Glad it wasn't just me! Thanks for the reply and well done on your build. Sandy.
The lengths us land rover owners will go to be able to keep them in the dry and work on them haha nice job what were the dimensions? Looking to build something similar but higher so i can put a 2 post ramp inside.
Thanks, I started in February 2020, and finished in September but because of lockdows I was waiting for parts, You can see from the playlist how long each part took. Also I only worked on it at the weekends and I am not a builder and have never built anything like this before on my own.
Brilliant work. We have plans for a garden office which I will need to build by myself so it has been interesting to see how you get around some of the problems of working on your own, especially with trusses and suchlike.
@@dibley1973 Thanks, most of it was ok, but moving big stuff like the walls was hard. Also those 8x4 sheets of OSB are difficult to handle. I will be doing a video on the tools I used and think would be handy to have for a build like this.
Thanks, have a look at this video it goes through everything I purchased for the build. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_uXY6eOezqI.html
Great build bud .Quick question what was the overall size of it ? Looking good to build something similar but want to be able to open all doors on the vehicle inside of the garage .cheers
Great build. Thanks for going to the trouble of filming and posting. I'm about to build a large double and w/s - 6m/9m and am looking for reasonably priced suppliers of timber. Im in Essex. Any recommendations? Thanks.
Thanks for the comments, I sourced my timber from a few places, odd bits from a local reclaim yard although it was new timber but cheaper. The big specialist longer pieces and the big 8x4 sheets I got from a timber yard local to me as they delivered. Sorry I'm not near Essex 🙂 Good luck. Did you check out the individual video's from my Garage build playlist too?
@@trollmanrs Hi yes I did. Very interesting. I just built an 8' x14' Gambrel roof shed to my own design, as a kind of 'Mini me' to the double garage and w/s I have just received planning for. There were a few bits I wasn't sure of consrtruction wise, but going through your vids I could see how you got around certain problems - so that was very helpful. I am also one man building and the really weird thing is that I used to be an electronics engineer also. I had my own business repairing TV's and video's until they becaime cheap enough to chuck. 😊
@@philipgreenwood841 spooky, I'm just about to pull down my old shed and this summer I will be building a new taller and bigger one. I work in video broadcast still, but now for a company who have developed the next gen video codec. Be interested in seeing a pic of yr shed.
Hi mate, I'm looking to build a very similar garage in front of my house, right down to the same layout in relation to the driveway and the road. I'd love to know what sort of planning permission did you have to get (if any) and were there any problems. Thanks : )
Hi, yes I had to get planning permission as it's in front of the building line. It was pretty easy to do, just fill in an online form and submit all the relevant docs and of course pay some cash. Every council will be different of course, and it helps if no one objections to your plans :-) Good luck.
Really helpful. I’m looking to build a garage like this on a 13’ x 40’ strip of land which is fenced in. I wouldn’t be able to wrap and clad after the walls were erected. Would it be a issue if i wrapped and clad them first? The membrane would have joins rather than being continuous
Hi, I guess that can be done but bear in mind the wall will be a lot heavier, if there are a few of you to lump the walls into place than thats all good.
@@trollmanrs That won’t be a problem. I can’t bring myself to order a concrete garage. If I did I’d still want to clad and line it. I wouldn’t attempt the foundation, but the rest looks like a fun project.
@@trollmanrs it's going well photos.app.goo.gl/6qL3PZcymVcF3RJw9 Constant cycle of delivery vans to our house the last couple of weeks so it's soon time to out it back together again 😱I am replacing what needs to be done and also because I have access to stuff but also cleaning, prepping and painting everything else so it should last a while longer yet ,😁
I had to have planning permission anyway as I built mine in the front garden, but it's under 2.5m high. I'm pretty sure if it's under 30sqm and under 2.5m you won't need planning permission normally. But check your local planning portal.
@@EpicSqu1rrel I just checked my plans, I was wrong. pitch is 3.6m, eaves are 2.5m. I designed it to be high enough to get my Land Rover Discovery 2 in there, it's tall as it's been lifted and has a big roof rack on it. Hope that helps.
Hi Gregg, thanks for the comments, I will soon get around to making a video on the total costings and the tools I woud recommend using for such a build. I think it was around 13k in total :-)
@@trollmanrs bloody hell , surely wasnt cheap . How long u reckon it will last ? for 13k , couldn't you get a brick one ? Doing math to get a similar one in back garden with flat roof , 7x4m .
@@campersBR Have a view of my latest video, in that I breakdown the costs. Yes I could of knocked probably 3 grand off that price. A brick build one would of been 35K ish, they wanted 8k for the base/foundations alone !!
Hi, For the top and bottom plates the 4x2's were bought as 6 meter lengths. Have a look at the video for all the costings for this build and you can see what I purchased. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_uXY6eOezqI.htmlsi=89UibBSujNM1rmkC
Hi, no problem with damp all winter. There is a vapour barrier under the concrete, and I put a damp course under the frame when I built it even though I used treated timber.
@@utubeuser8878 yes. Have a look at the playlist as all the other video's are there so you can see everything in more detail, as I didn't put every video in this timelapse.
I bought a 6x4m log cabin garage. It was £2,700 delivered from Holland. I spent about £1,300 insulating it, plasterboarding inside, underfloor heating, shiplap ceiling, spotlights, carpet tiles, etc. You can make a very nice office for £5k. God knows how that cost 15 grand.
@@davelowe1977 It was about 13k, and that includes base, electrics, planning & cedar cladding etc. The garage door was over 2k alone, and the concrete base another £2500. It soon mounts up, and this is not an office or a log cabin. You may want to price up all the timber you will be surprised how much it amounts too. Feel free to watch my upcoming video where I will go through all the costs.
@@davelowe1977 would love to see a picture of yours. But if you took off the price of the cedar cladding, large door and the base. that brings it down to under 5k !!
I am thinking of building a timber garage myself but I am stuck on one aspect. If the timber is sitting on the floor, will it not draw moisture and rot away over time? What should I do/put between the concrete foundation and the timber framing to prevent that?
Hi, Thanks for watching. I used treated timber for my build which has a decree of weather resistance but to help I also installed s DPC (damp proof course). In Part one of my build you can see my installing it on the bottom of the timer frame uprights. HTH.
Evening Jay, I used a Teckentrup Carteck Drive 500, which seems to be a re-badged Sommer (German) electric motor. It has 40mm insulation and a hign fixing to my rafters to give me enough high to get my truck in the garage + some spare room to jack it up. Hope that helps.
Hi, Do you mean the garage door? If so check out this video as I explain everything I purchased for the build; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_uXY6eOezqI.html
@@mikeycallanan2492 Good luck. Feel free to ping me if you have any questions. I will be doing a final video on costings and the must have tools you need for such a build.
@@trollmanrs love the video will you be too g a video of garage with all the electrics fitted ie, interior/exterior lighting, plug sockets etc. Once again great video .
@@bigjase3 Hey Jason, thanks. I can do. The electrics arn't finished yet as with lockdown it's been difficult to get the sparky in. Exterior lights and timer/dusk sensor need to be installed along with an external socket, plus I want an extra socket in the roof for a network switch, and some of the sockets need moving too. I also had initially wanted 2 x 4ft LED strip lights on the side for when I am machine polishing but I've not got room any more so I will probably put them above my 2 x work benches instead..
Like your vid👍 my question is, do you just do your project on your property cause it’s your property or do you have comfort a guy at the office with tons of paperwork to allowing you to build your project?!🤔 I live in the south of Germany, my project would be knock over an old garage for 3 cars an build it completely new but i’m tired of all that annoying paperwork here and decided to leave it like it is💁♂️ it’s a shame, I mean you can do it but you need a lot of money (10.000’s Euros), time and nerves ending the procedure after 1-2 years😔 so, here is your property not your property!!!🤦♂️
Thanks, glad you liked it, there is a whole series which show the build in a lot more detail, but I suggest you grab a nice German beer first :-) I had to get planning permission to do this build, if it was in my back garden and I had a flat roof then I wouldn't need planning. It can be complicated for sure.
@@Naughty_Squad One neighbour objected, but his objections were not valid and thus the council dismissed them. I think planning took about 3 months. What do you mean by seperate electric cable? I didn't use the water pipe in the end.
It's a montage of all my video's sped up to be a timelapse. Each video will have no more than 2 "subscribe" on them depending on length, so not excessive. !
