A man named Richard Stewart is working to preserve and display history at a small museum in one of America's oldest Black communities, Pocahontas Island in Virginia. CBS News' Skyler Henry joins CBSN to discuss his visit there and why Stewart thinks symbols of hate are an important part of that collection.

Pocahontas' actual Powhatan name was Matoaka. The name Pocahantas is a sobriquet. When she converted to Christianity, she took the name Rebecca. Then she married John Wolfe, traveled to England with her husband and son, and died on the way back to the North American shores. She is buried at Saint George's Anglican Church in Gravesend, England.

Awesome, thank you. I had to look up "sobriquet" and found that it basically means "NICKNAME"

I’ve been exploring black history for two years now and I’ve never heard of this place before and it’s less than 10 miles from where I live but it’s one of if not the oldest black community ever established in America smh so much of our history has been abandoned and kept secret from us even if it’s been right under are nose but they want to talk about us trying to erasing history “tuh” let’s talk about the history that was erased from us

Pocahontas was a native Indian Hebrew that traded her own family for the enemy so we can just imagine what type of town this is

Mr Stewart died over a year ago. Noone in the local historic community knows what is going to happen to the collection he curated. Was on Whitten street last week. The handpainted Poco island sign gone as well as the underground railroad house and black history museum signs. museum is closed, Jarrett house is still standing but the handwritten history on the door is now faded to the point of being unreadable. Antoine and Cynthia please get your acts together to keep his legacy alive. I know that help has been offered but ignored. Petersburg 2030 should be a very real concern to that community. The developer that now owns the old harbor has plans. You see the old lumber yard getting attention. Very concerned that the residents will be taxed out and the history will be forgotten.

That is why you have the Library of Congress and Britannica. As for local museums, more of this type is needed. Too much real information gets buried under all history.
