Best musical I have seen in quite a while.

Billy Wilder Died in 2002. If he were alive- Billy, Tony Curtis & Jack Lemon probably would not care at all for this adaptation. The opinon man (unnamed ?) - has a right to his opinion however - producers, directors and writers took a master work and although the music has some great moments, they should have stuck more to the original story line. Also their choice of Sugar (Marilyn Monroe) played by the very talented Adrianna Hicks was in my opinion, the wrong decision even though she's a great singer. Audiences have images in their head and when writers stray too far it takes away from Mr. Wilder's classic film. Gene Wilder publicy agreed on TV interviews regarding the remake of Willy Wonka, it saddened him deeply. On a postive note, I was glad their hit song 'Some Like IT Hot'& commercials drew audiences but the gross & attendance revenue reveals the impending result. With an average of about 80% attendance with a few peak weeks, the word of mouth left some real disappointment preventing those who might've gone to see this. My associates walked away disappointed and I guess that's why the show officially opened December 11th 2022 and closed December 30, 2023. Less than a year is suspect when a show wins 4 Tony Awards. Creators, producers & writers let their own egos & choices of a good 'idea' to a closing in less than a year. As far as those who posted positive reviews - That's why Baskin & Robbins has 31 flavors ! (or at least they used to) I felt sorry for the cast as I continually reviewed the grosses and attendance. The cast members gave it their all with the hand they were dealt. Best of luck to all of you - so much talent ! You should all be proud.

Yes, Kevin Del Aguila is life-affirming and hilarious. It’s the comedic equivalent of having a suspense audience on the edge of our seats, anticipating laughter at every moment.

I saw the show last weekend and agree with all of your review. It is fantastic fun, a big swinging Broadway musical that is fast paced and hilarious. Sets, light, music, costumes, makeup, and performances all deliver. In a recent interview, Matthew López (one of the writers of the book along with Amber Ruffin) was asked about having updated the story through a 21st century lens. His answer was brilliant. He said that these diverse characters have always been around but now this story is being told by removing the 20th century lens.

This was a fantastic review. It seemed to capture the spirit of the show. This may be the new splashy traditional style hit that I think this season is in need of. Small detail but when you mentioned the team that wrote the score for 1972's "Sugar" at around. :39, the composer's name is pronounced "Joo-Lee" (Jule) Styne.

You know, I knew that about Jule Styne, but for some reason I second guessed myself and the wrong thing came out.

for some reason...it is not doing well at the box office.... i saw SUGAR on broadway......and really liked it...in fact...preferred it over this "new"version even though this is not an adaptation of the original book musical...with Curtis/Lemond

My wife and I gave ourselves tickets to this show, based on the suggestion of a longtime friend of ours. I'm a great fan of "Some Like It Hot," the movie, Billy Wilder, Marilyn, Lemmon and, in this case, Curtis. The musical "Sugar," the first attempt at a musical version of the film in the 1970s, had a problem that started with the title. It seemed to be cashing in on "Marilyn on Broadway" with new (unmemorable) music and the same plot. "Some Like It Hot" on Broadway swings in its music, dancing and plot, taking the original story and, as some have said, updated it to 2023. As someone who has seen the movie many times I was also amazed by how they could take this classic movie, put it on a small stage and, logistically and with artful writing, echo the many scenes of the film. It is outstanding and as my wife and I always say when we go to a live performance of quality, "Professional Show Business."

Does having seen the movie enhance your experience at the play, or does it impede it, or make no difference? In Seattle, I saw the touring company of The Producers, and I spent too much time thinking, "These guys are no Mostel and Wilder," particularly in scenes that are very similar to the movie.

It all depends on how passionate you are toward the source material and how open minded you are to change in the text. It’s kind of like seeing a film adaptation of the book. 99% of the time, the book is considered better. Borle and Ghee are definitely not Curtis and Lemmon. They give totally different views of the characters. Your enjoyment will be dependent on your willingness to embrace those changes. I’m always going to be a fan of the film Some Like it Hot, but I’m fine with these changes, and enjoy it for what it is.

And to be perfectly honest, I have a general disdain for movie to stage adaptations, especially musical adaptations because I generally find them to be cheap cash grabs that have no respect to the source material. This is a very rare occurrence where I enjoy both.

@@onemansopinion8135 I share that disdain, but I admit mine is from snobbishness,. not experience. On the rare opportunity I have to see a Broadway show, I'd rather choose something not based on a movie -- usually starring actors in iconic performances -- I could watch at any time. But I'm very happy this one worked!
