Could one marine have stopped the entire human-flood-covenant events? I have a theory that may point to just that.

you may want to review the Lore.. humans had encountered the flood before the halo games, in requiem, please note that the Masterchief is acknowledged as a forerunner "The Reclaimer." The Forerunners are from another galaxy where the flood had infested and laid to ruin. otherwise your probably right.

Simple, Vietnam tactics. The flood purposely left those bodies uninfected to not give a hint of the threat in the area, to let prey continue to venture deeper to make it easier to ambush and infect. Also, the sight of a dead comrade tends to make others want to exact revenge, which further pulls them into the kill-zone. Now when I say Vietnam tactics, im referring to how their snipers would do non-kill shots to injure soldiers & marines, deliberately to pull there squad-mates out of cover and continue to pick them off, pulling on their heartstrings by further hitting the wounded with non-kill shots so that they scream out in agony.

This is because the Flood does not directly assimilate its prey immediately. The Flood Containment Facility was visited multiple times by UNSC and Covenant forces in the novelisation. One of them includes Victor 93 (The Downed Pelican in the swamp that came before Johnson's platoon came.) At this point, the flood purposefully left bodies untouched to lure more prey into the facility. The UNSC kept sending fireteams down there because they keep disappearing without reason. Sergeant Johnson's platoon had barely over 30 men, (12 were with Corporal Lovik at the end of the mission). The remaining 18 were with Captain Keyes and Johnson. Yet we see more Human Combat forms than that (Notably in the lower levels of the Containment facility that wasnt investigated by Johnson's team but prior fireteams (Probably Victor 93's platoon). This can also be argued by the fact that the flood left Elite bodies in the room but chose to leave it uninfected until after Johnson's fireteam was compromised. You visit this same room later to find the bodies missing. Furthermore, all UNSC personnel killed near Mendoza (Just outside the room) are also untouched by infection. By the time the Master Chief investigated Johnson's platoon, there were enough bodies for the flood to reveal themselves and thus began infecting the dead bodies. Side Edit: Members of Victor 93's platoon can actually be encountered in the game. After reaching the 2nd elevator, you would usually see 1 or 2 marines still fighting before being killed off by Combat forms.
@commanderbacara225
@commanderbacara225 7 лет назад
mikhail king You can visit the room after the flood show up but the point remains that in the scripted event, the only elites we ever see in the mission are the dead ones we see through the recordings. In the map, there are no elite carcasses at all, indicating that after Johnson's platoon was ambushed, the flood decided to use the elite carcasses to kill/capture the UNSC team, explaining why the room was empty when Chief went in the room the first time, despite it being littered with Sangheili corpses in the recording.

If I was in that situation, I'd peace the fuck out as well. That's just being prudent - in truth, their position had been compromised, they were surrounded and in danger of being overwhelmed - the best course of action would've been to fall back in an orderly fashion and take defensive position just outside the door in that natural choke-point. It's Keyes' and Johnson's failure that they hesitated to do this. Not only does it increase the chances of survival in general but ALSO acts as a pressure valve for the "fight or flight" response of the individual soldiers - if Sarge or Keyes had ordered an orderly retreat then Mendoza likely wouldn't have ran, as wanting to fall back and hearing a superior issuing the order reinforces the command presence of that superior - allowing them to keep control in an extremely stressful situation and maintaining coordination and teamwork.

DEBUNKED: Mendoza did NOT open the locked door. It was a different Marine named Kappus, who sometimes shares the same in-game model as Mendoza. In Halo: The Flood (the book version of Halo 1), Mendoza is found by the Chief later and is killed after being taken over by the Flood. The Marine that falls on the Chief is most likely Kappus.
@pixelknight163

The game calls him Mendoza. Sergeant Johnson calls him Mendoza. So he IS Mendoza. The game takes priority over any book inspired by it since the game is literally where the Halo trilogy starts.
@JimHalpertFromTheOffice
@JimHalpertFromTheOffice 7 лет назад
After doing a bit more research, I've come to the conclusion that in the game it's Mendoza falling on the Chief. In the book, it's most likely Kappus. In Halo canon, technically the games take priority over the books. So it's somewhat debunked then.

This is one of those instances where the scare factor for the flood introduction outweighed the story itself, in this case, Mendoza. Bungie's thinking with Halo 1 was alot different because of the fact that this game was not meant to have sequels, so they put all their best efforts into the story itself, including how the player was gonna encounter the flood for the first time, you notice when the door opens, and when Mendoza's body drops into Chief's arm, it was meant to scare the player, again, this is one of those times where Bungie decided it was best to try really scare the player with the flood, rather than put forth into why Mendoza was not turned into one of the flood. this is why you must take things for a grain of salt with Halo 1's story, I am glad this one of the decisions Bungie made, they did a good job with the atmosphere buildup for the flood, and for Mendoza to just be propped up against the door and for Chief to suddenly open it and see him suddenly there was a way to really try to frighten the player, but in my opinion, this video tries to get into way too much detail on something Bungie did not or would think about many years later with the sequels. :P

Mendoza and Johnson where members of project Orion. A super soldier program that was ultimately a failure as less than seven people survived it (out of over a hundred) and there where no noticeable change to the survivors. at least not immediately as the survivors actually aged much slower (Orion took place a decade before spartan II) and they became immune/undetectable to the flood. Dr Halsey discovered all this from Johnson's Blood and did make a cure for the flood . . . then she got trapped/lost in space

Luke you need to read up on your lore, Johnson survived because of his Spartan-1 or Orion project, training, the plasma grenade incident on Paris IV was an ONI cover up to hide his Spartan -1 training, its most likely that the game Devs weren't too worried with lore accuracy when making the cut scene.
@UltimateDominion
@UltimateDominion 7 лет назад
SEALkid+ Agreed, in the future, specially for Halo CE, Luke needs to take a look into the lore, and game itself before making a theory(though more so the game as that is where the real secrets are), Halo CE is full of secrets, alot of which is actually in the game itself, whether by playing the game normally, or using a Dev Trainer, you are bound to find countless secrets and easter eggs, Mendoza was more than likely used as a prop for the door, rather being being someone randomly immune to the Flood for no apparent or good reason to be, it's even more likely that the secret marine outside the map at the start, who use Mendoza's model, was originally meant to be playable character at some point in the games development(even if that is not the case, it's still more likely than what Luke says about Mendoza in this video), I hope he reads these comments, because they are important to understanding of whats really going on in Halo CE and that he can take criticism for his videos on this particular game very seriously, it's very likely Bungie did not care about the lore as much as they did in the sequels, as they were more worried about creating tension and scaring the player for this level(which was definitely the smart call), he should definitely do the secret marine theory though on his channel, but he needs to make sure to look at GeneralKidd's video about the marine, show off to properly play as the marine, show where to find good weapons, good survival tactics, and of course the theory itself, he should do some research aswell, but overall would be a much better, and more realistic theory than this theory. :)

Another issue here is that the Flood don't use _every_ body. Some are too badly damaged to be any use to them. Marvin Mobuto, the Marine who died in the Library, fought about halfway through it before being completely overwhelmed. The Flood didn't infect him just because he was mangled by the time he finally stopped fighting. The unnamed sangheili and Mendoza might well have been immune, but considering this, it seems more likely that they just died too violently for the Flood to be able to use them afterwards. Especially considering that Mendoza was much younger than Johnson, and so was not likely to have been enhanced in any way.

+Adarsh Singh That is actually possible. In Halo canon it shows that ancient humanity did find a so called "cure" for the flood. They basically put this flood cure into humans and tested them out against the flood. What happened was that the flood were deterred from attacking the humans with the "cure" in them because what it did was make it harder for flood forms to infect the humans injected with the "cure". So the flood would just avoid those humans and attack others that didn't have the cure in them. It is possible that maybe some of the genetics from ancient humanity has passed on to those like Mendoza.

All you need to do is read he books to disprove this idea. I'll try to explain. 1. Johnson's immunity comes from a very rare issue with his nervousness system (caused by being a member of the spartan 1 program) that caused it to decay. 2. Johnson escaped the ring aboard a pelican troop transport in a similar manner to how the master chief escaped aboard a longsword fighter. 3. A flood spore carves its way into the Chest cavity (hence the reason why head shots are all but pointless) so it is reasonable to assume that the flood tried to take over the Elite only to be stopped by plasma bolts from other Covenant forces. 4. The flood have been in hibernation for millions of years they are weakened. We know that at least once a flood spore took over a marine host but he still retained his cognitive ability. In other words, his body was under the control of the flood but his mind was not. I can't explain the strange case of Mendoza but eh 4 out of 5 ain't bad for a RU-vid comment. Still if anyone can explain Mendoza I would love to hear it.

ryland dungan this video theory is wrong as in Halo:The Flood it clearly states"this one a horribly mutated human . Though the creature was distorted by whatever had ravaged his body, the Chief recognized him nonetheless. It was Private Manuel Mendoza, the soldier that Sergeant Johnson loved to yell at, and one of the Marines who had been with Keyes when he disappeared into this nightmare" this means that mendoza is not immune to the flood and the game cutscenes may be wrong according to lore

I doubt the first flood outbreak that lead to the Human Forerunner war would have happened, if that were possible. The dust was used for a couple of centuries to make animals more docile. Then people ate them. As the first outbreak started, people who had long been consuming the meat also began to mutate. So, doubt.
@STORM0734

Pretty sure that "dust" was some sort of reengineered remains of the of the Precursors (The race that came before the Forerunners) that the Forerunners had mistakenly discovered years after defeating the Precursor during the Precursor/Forerunner war. The dust in question that was discovered, was realized to created exotic variations of animals, and were valued greatly because of that. Basically over thousands of years, these infected animals basically devolved into the flood which was the Precursors plan the entire time. Its been a while since I read the books, but I think this is roughly how it went. These events were ~100,000 to 150,000 years before the first Halo game,

That's not Mendoza. If you read halo:the flood, Mendoza was one of the first infected marines, and when John saw him, he tried to talk to him, but Mendoza attacked him. That Marine at the door was a unnamed Marine.

Snuggle Muffins No, it is Mendoza. Sergeant Johnson calls him Mendoza, he's the only one with a hat, and he's the only one who ran away which was how he ended up at the door. The book was just inconsistent. Games take priority over the novels.

Snuggle Muffins That Was Mendoza,As You Know,He Was The Only One With A Fisherman Hat,It's Impossible That He Was The First Marine To Have Been Infected,As Keyes Shouted "Mendoza,Get Back Here!" But He Continued To Run,The Door Locked On Him Leaving The Combat Forms To Have Brutally Killed Him.

I would think that to man. But look him up on the halo wiki page. Master chief kills him with a shot gun, in the comics titles "halo:the flood". He's the first combat form chief encounters.

A few hours after infection, John-117 found Mendoza in the structure and attempted to communicate with the Marine, unknown that his consciousness was already taken over by the Infection Form. Mendoza attacked the SPARTAN and took three entire Soellkraft 8 Gauge Shell from John-117's Shotgun, with the results both "spectacular and disgusting."

So, the infection got to him. His immunity system kept him normal. Maybe he lived on an industrial zone and was used to toxins in things like that, and slowly had built himself a immunity system. I know the make-ups would not be the same, but it was close to keep him normal and not a flood.

no. The flood tap into the spinal cord and convert the flesh by assimilating the body on a cellular level. based on the neurological and genetic build of a species... there is no immune system defence because the flood infection spore attacks all cells, skill cells blood cells brain cells all of them, it rewrites the DNA and basically turns it into necrotic tissue, your white blood cells wouldn't be able to keep up.

This is partially explained in the novels. iirc, Jenkins was the one in the book who retained some for of consciousness after being infected, even communicating with other marines on a very base level with points and grunts. It's also explained that Sgt. Johnson survives an infection process as well because he is survivor of the spartan 1 program, and the genetic enhancements messed with his genetic code so much that the flood was unable to use him and 'rejected' him for a combat form. The comments underneath probably say the same things already or something similar. Halsey, when she meets up with john on a covenant supercarrier after they capture it, gives him the choice of two data crystals regarding johnson. one will tell the ONI that johnson miraculously survived and rejected the flood, and would likely kill and dissect him in the hopes of somehow replicating the effect for all of humanity, but she mentions that the likelihood of them succeeding in such a task is slim to none, and it essentially sentences johnson to death. The other completely omits the johnson part of her research, which means humanity will likely never have a 'cure' for the flood, but will ensure that he lives, at least from the ONI. John crushes the report that will kill johnson, saying/thinking that he's seen enough good men die, and that he can't sentence johnson to death on a fleeting hope that they can cure the flood. Damn do i need to order another copy of these books, they were surprisingly well written for something thats basically just video game backstory.

The Flood left some bodies uninfected as bait. A squad goes in and loses contact, then more reinforcements to sent in to look for them, allowing them to grow their numbers. The Flood were already stalking Chief in the swamp, they wanted to lure him in and the whole level was a trap.

flood cant infect Johnson because origional combat augmentations which over time decreased combat effectiveness, the flood cant infect him specificaly because of radiation, which is released from plasma grenades and carbine rifles... there is alot more lore about it that you can look into
@8bitarmory846
@8bitarmory846 7 лет назад
Johnson's immunity came from his involvement in Project ORION, which left his nervous system FUBAR. To prevent rumors and leaks about the project, ONI made up a condition resulting from prolonged / increased exposure to plasma, and claimed that Johnson detonated a crate full of plasma grenades.
@Keithanater1
@Keithanater1 6 лет назад
The reason Johnson is supposedly immune to the flood is because he originally was part of project Orion (the original spartan program) these augmentation that Johnson went through were not enough to make him a spartan so to speak but still altered his DNA in a way that made him an unsuitable host for the flood, the flood are also known throughout the game to store bodies for later, only to take them over whence there is trouble in the area I believe as a surprise tactic mostly. Someone is quite likely to have their guard down if it appears that their are no living enemies in the area

There's 2 reasons for this, a cinematic reason and a logical reason. I think a logical reason for this is that the flood were in a wild/un-coordinated stage because they lacked a gravemind to coordinate them. Because of this their actions are really animalistic and sporadic which is maybe why they infected some things but not others, it could also tie into the point that his blood had something that made it hard to be infected. If flood forms were trying to infect him but were struggling to do so then instead they just moved on to find another host body (the injuries still killed the marine). This might have been the same thing with the Elite, they were struggling to infect it and so just abandoned it's corpse and left to find another. Perhaps things like blood types or disease/conditions related to that make it hard to be infected. The cinematic reason is because honestly that scene is horrifying the first time you see it, Chief is a trained super soldier but even he jumps a bit when the door opens and the body falls on him and then watching the footage probably freaked the hell out him since humanity had no concept at all of something like flood existing. It's also a very common trope in a horror movie for the protagonist to stumble across a body and learn of the horrifying shit that's coming. It's also very similar to scenes in zombie movies, zombies spread by biting humans and turning them but there are plenty of scenes where the zombies will devour a body and it won't turn so it's probably just something in that sort of direction

3:06 maybe when the other marines were infected, they just beat him to death (there isn't any blood, so they couldn't have shot him, that's my theory anyway) and set it up so that it looked like a covenant party had attacked and killed/retaken Keyes in order to ensnare more victims. Sry for the rant.

The War On Truth Actually correct. Johnson was a SPARTAN-1, and the augmentations scrambled his nervous system so that the flood couldn't force a neural lock. ONI made a cover story about him detonating a crate full of plasma grenades that give him "Boren's Syndrome". Read Halo: First Strike and the wiki's.
