At Glamour's Women of the Year Live Summit, the model and activist Cameron Russell asked, "what is consent when the law protects him before it protects you?"
Standing in front of a giant banner that bore the phrase "We Do Not Consent," Russell said: "People rarely spend time together without speaking, but that is what modeling is. Being in front of the camera is being silent and still finding a way to communicate, to build a relationship, to become someone without words. The silence required by my job is often mistaken for being voiceless. The assumption is that I have nothing to say. Sometimes I believed that too. There were many moments when I found myself speechless."

There are disturbing people in the comments section trying to downplay the issue and saying that she had the choice to leave. First off, I’m sure most of them are men and second, this industry preys on young naive girls most of which are taught to listen and do as someone says i.e. school: you’re rewarded when you do as the teacher says or get good grades, you’re recognized. Of course these young girls are going to listen to what their “boss” tells them. Not to mention the fear and embarrassment of speaking up when something happens to them I’m sure is unreal and overwhelming even though there is nothing to be embarrassed about you can’t tell them how to feel in the moment it happens. You can’t fault the victim, that’s ridiculous.

Wow! She is well-spoken, beautiful and BRAVE. I found it easy to relate to her story when she explained “is this what this is supposed to be like”...or whatever she said. Because when you’re young, innocent and naive to the lurking vultures, you have nothing to base anything on. These sick men choose young people because they can be manipulated easier. These men also know that young women are trying to achieve their goals and will Likely do things in that pursuit. Also, her discussion made Kendall Jenner pop in my mind for some reason. A while ago she was having a rough time on the Kardashian show; having lots of anxiety when traveling for modeling jobs overseas. She discussed this with her mom but I felt like her mom wasn’t getting it. I’m wondering if she’s also been a victim or seen bad things? I hope she’s brave enough to speak out to help others if so? I hope her mother isn’t pushing her into these things for monetary gain? Once you sell your soul, do you ever truly get it back?😔

here's a story of a 1920's fashion model; (can't remember name, some variation on catherine) katja walked over the streets, looking at the beautifull toys, she could never afford three florines for a dollhouse, father made that in a whole week. for her cheap toys where available, she would play untill they broke. so wandering through the snowy streets she looked for a rich uncle (patron), for 'tippling' her parents knew verry well, her lowly job. In fact it was they who sold her to the local brothel. for a shilling men would be allowed to 'use' her as the wished. katja was turned off by the idea of sleeping with old, drunk, ugly or thin men (fat was fashionable at the time) she preffered painters, those men who would compose a love poem, on canvas. they also mostly looked and rarely touched. one day a rich patron proposed, she married him, on her sweet sixteen. she told this story, shortly before she died at the old old age of eighty, she outlived all who feasted on her flesh. i think this is the life story of the barrones of vaugham. king leopold's misstress

Her first two minutes of justifying herself is utter bravo sierra. My daughter at 14, absolutely beautiful and whip smart, was in a movie , a minor part. They wanted to expand her role in the movie and pay her way more money. After about a week on the set she said " no". She quickly saw thru the facade, the emptiness of it all, the faking, the posers. She never worked a movie again.

@@StackExchan9e Losing me on the commentary. Only speaking for my daughter, she had more options available, a different vision for herself and maturity beyond her years. At 14 years of age it was liking interacting with a 30 year old. She eventually got her Phd at Harvard.

A model's silence (considered 'professionalism' in the industry) is mistaken for voicelessness. The models are left speechless by abusive practices in the industry during photoshoots presented as instructions.

Psalm 118:17 I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. Revelation 21:8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars-they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. I would like to mention that the q-word is a slur, and Russel's reckless use of its is pretty bad (7:47). She had a good speech otherwise though. I really loved how much courage she put forth into admitting she was taken advantage of by her jerk bosses.

Just because it becomes a “trend” doesn’t make it any less meaningful. This is the reason she was comfortable coming forward with her experiences in the first place. She offered plenty of reasons why not to come forward, socialites of the world could ruin her reputation, future job options & her livelihood for speaking out. That’s says something, right?
