A lot of other people have mentioned that the can opener is a great screwdriver, which it certainly is -- in fact I have found myself using it over the T-handle phillips on the Tinker before, but if you still prefer a tool without the can opener, look into the Victorinox Electrician. It's 93mm as opposed to the 84mm of the Cadet, so it's bigger and heaver, but the tools are also beefier. Specifically the blade and the bottle opener are both bigger and more built out. The Electrician also swaps the nail file for an in line awl, which can be quite useful, and the can opener for a small sheep's foot blade, which works great for a lot of cutting tasks.

Nice!!!! Great video! Even though I’ve gotten used to it, if Victorinox would just put scissors in the Cadet it would be even better!

The cadet is a great Swiss Army knife. I do like the can opener personally, It’s a decent small combo screw driver, and thin enough for light prying in a tight spot, and you can open a can with it. I’d prefer that over the weird package opener they’re piloting on the Companion.

Hi from the UK. My current EDC knife is a Victorinox Tinker but I did carry a Cadet model for many years. Unfortunately the blade is a bit scratched up now. The Alox type knives are great due to their slim profiles. If you are seeking an even more minimalist set up, try the Bantam model in alox, just a blade and a combination tool, its a good knife. Here in the UK , these types of knives are the only ones we can legally carry. Carrying a locking blade could get you jail time.

I did, but I didn’t like the bantam. The Waiter became an instant favorite though. I like when the blade gets all scratched up. Thanks for the comment buddy!

The tip of the can opener perfectly fits a number 2 Philips screw. It’s a better Philips driver than the T-bar one on the back of a tinker. The file tip will work in a number 1 Philips screw.

Hey, that's great to know. I hadn't given that a try. thanks!

Make it smaller and its the perfect travel tool. When I'm in other countries, I always need a can opener and bottle opener. I can't remember how many times I had to just use a knife to open a can.

I have carried my since 2017 matter of fact is the anniversary model of 17. Looking a little worn but no worries. I carry it and small Sebenza as my edc . It seems to hold an edge ok . My son in law used mine to field dress a deer . It actually did a fine job . I touch it up with the little pen like sharpner they sell . Nice video my friend
@thepracticaltacticalminima3940
That is awesome! Thank you for the support.

The can opener comment is exactly why I was excited to see the package opener on the Companion. I hate the scales but eventually it should be cheaper, with regular scales. I ordered it because I wanted this file with scissors and something other than a can opener on at least 1 knife. I am happy to have a can opener for a travel or work knife, but a package opener that works as a number 2 Phillips still, and the toolset I have been wanting, is like a dream knife, with scales that I don't care for. Luckily they are easy to change. Your totally right about that file. I just use scissors way to much not to have them.

Well if you bake the can opener is fantastic at pulling out the cooking rack; the bottle opener is great at pushing it back in. CHEERS ‼️

The can opener/ screwdriver is the MOST useful feature of any Victorinox I own. The bottle opener i could live without.
@thepracticaltacticalminima3940
Interesting! What do you use it for? I've grown really fond of the combo tool on the Compact, it seems to do everything I need.
@FreedomFox1
@FreedomFox1 Год назад
I’m curious too, what do you use it for? I’m thinking of modding mine into a longer screwdriver without the can opening function. Especially on SAK’s without a nail cleaner, a small flathead can work for that.
@cyberdon-kv2iz

@@FreedomFox1 I use the screwdriver a lot, and the can opener is the primary can opener in our kitchen. :)

I use the can opener all the time, making lunch n my workshop, there’s something romantic, and old timey about it. Tuna cans, etc. For EDC, I like the idea that in an emergency, should I find an unopened can of food, I’ll be able to open it. Just peace of mind really, who knows if I’ll ever actually find myself in that situation. Nothing like being prepared.

When you carry the thick red fiber handled Swiss folder and NOW you carry the ones with Alox scales the difference is noticeable. If you accept its a folder and your expectations are realistic then one of these is indeed "good enough" for most things. As the saying goes...perfect is the enemy of the good.

Agree, it's a great little knife if ones everyday cutting needs are light enough. For the call opener... That's one of my absolute favourite tools 😁 but again depends on how heavy duty are your needs... That thing makes a fantastic emergency Phillips N.2 screwdriver in addition to a good little flat head (while the tip of the file fits Phillips N.1 and N.0). In addition, thanks to the curved sharpened edge... It's the best pry tool for "delicate" jobs (opening the tv remote without shipping the plastic with a real pry bar or a flat screwdriver, or... Removing the plastic scales from standard Victorinox knives :) ). Admittedly, though... I pretty much never used it as a can opener
@thepracticaltacticalminima3940
Yes! It’s my dedicated scale removal tool 😂

The can opener is the only can opener i use, even at home in the kitchen. There are still cans that don´t have a pull tab on the planet.
@thepracticaltacticalminima3940
@@RiderOftheNorth1968 Why though? A proper can opener works significantly better and quicker in the kitchen.

@@thepracticaltacticalminima3940 My reason is that it is always there, lying on a small ledge in my kitchen. thats where one of my Victorinox Soldiers lives. I use it for packages, small cutting tasks, even some food prep. And cans. I very seldom uses scissors to be honest. I don´t even think i own a "regular" kichen can opener to be honest. The trusted old Soldier serves me well daily.

The Compact is the best 2 layer knife they make and they know it and that is why it's the most expensive but it is awesome. They need to bring back the black scale version because just red offerings aren't cutting it. It's nice you can get whatever color plus scales for it online but there is another $15-ish and it ends up costing about $70 when it's all said and done. A new Spartan or Tinker is about $20. As for Alox I will take the Pioneer X in black and forget the rest of the Alox stuff and it's around $45 to $50 and same thickness as a 2 layer cellidor 91mm knife. If I had to pick one SAK it's still the Compact as the true king of EDC utility. I'm ready for a black carbon fiber scale version with a N690 blade that is as stainless as what they currently use but it's way tougher and harder and about as easy to sharpen. I'm dreaming but it would be nice and N690 is inexpensive

For sure, I actually put up a video recently of changing out the scales on my compact to micarta from etsy. It's easily the best overall tool set for modern EDC. Thanks for the comment.
@FreedomFox1
@FreedomFox1 Год назад
Totally agree on the compact. But I just love the alox models (even the liners seem nicer). If the Cadet had scissors, it would be perfect, but it’s pricey to mod (the going rate for used 84 mm scissors is $50-100). I’m thinking of just converting my Pioneer X into a blade-less model, since I carry a Spyderco anyway.

I like the reviews. I do a lot of work on a ladder, so the flip open knives work well for me. You described that well. I had to use a knife for self defense twice. The non-locking knife collapsed on me. I sliced open the drug addict after he stabbed me, but my knife collapsed and cut me. The time I had to stab my teacher was different. He was forcing me to do interpersonal stuff with him. I was able to use the flip knife with the free hand to stab him, so I could get away. The one handed knives work so much better ...and practice with the right and left hands.

Ruike Boker+ etc are made by Sanremu and their steel choice is good but their tools are just plain odd the window breaker and belt cutter Ffs.
