My first car in 1986 was a 1972 Vanden Plas Princess 1300, which I sold in the Summer of 87. What a great car it was, them picnic tables were great for all sorts of things#.# The AD016 was/is a true classic
i own and drive a 71 austin 1100 in bright tartan red! fantastic car! gets as much attention as a ferrari! better looking than the mini new or old! a true british icon that never gets its due praise!
what a great credit to the video this tune is! love 1100`s to bits!, got my beautiful red 71 model on road this year!, still only 51,000 miles on it! great car! get attention all time! agree that fords are rubbish! capri`s etc pah! a real piece of trouble 1100`s easy to fix!, the secret is dry storage against rust!
I had one of these, a 1964 model but probably a late 63 asit had the cranked gear shift and no synchro on first, lovely car in deep connaught green. It did not have any rust problems either but I did have the subframe and radius arms replaced, the later was a weak point with earlier version as they allowed water ingress with knackered the bearing.
great vid 2 thumbs up :-)). the 1100 was a very progressive car in the 60-ies and the hydralastic suspention was a great development from BMC. shame to see what happens to BMC/BMH/BLMC and at last BL. britains cars once rule the whole world and commonwealth and now? only names who are gone with the wind, such a shame :-((
THe 1100 was one of history's few cars that was replaced by a car that was worse in almost every way. The Allegro was uglier (almost universal opinion), slower, less economical, and smaller inside. It wasn't screwed together any better either. Wonderful!
it was! The best selling car for all of the 60s apart from the one year it took for people to realise the new Cortina was all fur coat and no knickers... so then they bought an 1100
Great Video. I liked the Italian footage. I kept expecting Michael Caine to pop up with a Bedford bus..."Nah, we make our getaway in three Austin 1100s..." I bet some of those in the video that got rough treatment suffered from engine shudder problems when the clutch was let in after! Strange in one of the later scenes - the white LHD parks between a Mini and another 1100, yet the 'other' 1100 appears to be a later facelift model with the wider grille...so is this a promotional film?
Urm.... I´ll leave it to your imagination but it was not very in keep with the Vanden Plas image was it? Just bought myself a '77 Stag - will it be as much fun as my VDP i wonder!
And how many cortinas had front wings continually requiring repairs? What about the nasty 90's incarnation of the Escort that well literally fell to pieces around you? We'll leave it there.... although how about the ignition keys that wear like no-ones business, then leave you stranded?
they sold a version of this here in America, called the Austin America. i believe the only body style available to us Americans was a 2 door. it's a shame all but a handful of these were junked out, though they do come up for sale every now and then on eBay. i kinda want one of them now.
Yeah build quality was not the best but neither were Vivas or Anglias - the 1100/1300 were actually very succesful but the failure of BL lay in their appalling attempts to replace the car. Never liked 'em myself but they were definitely the right car for many many buyers.....
