Patty, you are a GENIUS! There is always more to learn and more to unvent, even for something so simple as an SSK. I tend to be a reductionist-ie, how different could a different method of SSKing be, given that it results in the same yarn pulled through the same loops in the same order-but this is *opening my mind* in the best way

I can't believe I've never seen this video before. I knit Portuguese style and ktbl is very awkward so I've done sl1k1psso in place of ssk for years. But coming out of the back loop of the second stitch like this and then swinging the tip back to the front will stretch things out like shown while also getting the needle in place to make the new stitch. Besides making a neater left leaning decrease, this might just also be a great way of doing ssk Portuguese style.

sort of. Something I teach in my DVD Knitting Bag of Tricks. Prep in the row before by working an Eastern knit, then on your ssp row, just purl two together through the back loop. You can email me info@pattylyons.com if you'd like to get that class.

@juliapriest9427

I don't think that's possible with this technique, but you could go through the front loop of one stitch and the back loops of the next two.

I have a question..I’m making a multidimensional scarf in garter stitch…I would love to do this ssk for the next one…on the return row, would you do a purl stitch then continue in garter for the rest of the row? Hope you understand what I’m asking. Thank you
@PattyLyonsKnitting
@PattyLyonsKnitting 4 месяца назад
Garter is knitting every row. If you purl a stitch you will interrupt the pattern.
@Robin-xe1zo

My dear Granny B, born in London, professional knitter in Malta in WWII, showed me her SSK in about 1975. It was: Slip 1 knit-wise, slip 1 purl-wise; then, with the left needle, knit those two stitches on the right needle together through the front loops. I believe it is the same SSK result as yours, Patty. I may be biased, but I think it's a little quicker and easier. Interesting, no?
@PattyLyonsKnitting
@PattyLyonsKnitting 2 года назад
Your gran was onto a part of it, but I'm afraid it's not quite the whole picture. Also, it's not quite quicker, and it won't really give you the same results. Your Gran did twist the bottom stitch, but she added a few extra moves in there that you don't need, and it's skipping the most important step which is stretching out the bottom loop to take slack out of the first loop. When you slip a stitch from on needle to the other purlwise, you are moving a stitch from one needle to the other for not reason. So instead of slipping one stitch, slipping another stitch, then inserting your needle into them both and knitting them together, I just put my needle into both stitches and knit them together AND fix the slack. Have you tried what I'm teaching in the video yet? Give it a try. In my upcoming book I show a picture side by side from the old slip one as if to knit, slip one as if to purl vs the one move SSK and you'll see the huge difference.
@Robin-xe1zo
@Robin-xe1zo 2 года назад
@@PattyLyonsKnitting Well, Auntie Robin respectfully owns her disagree! I did grab my needles and yarn and tried the way you suggest as well as my own to have a good look at them both. I find Granny B's way less awkward (the stitches are slipped so that one doesn't have to fish around the back and try to get the needle in that tighter stitch) and therefore ultimately quicker, and the most important thing -- as you say, and I agree, to stretch out the second loop to take slack out of the first -- is accomplished automatically Granny's way when the left needle is inserted through the front loops at a 45-degree angle. This difference aside, this is a very good opportunity, now I'm typing, to thank you for all your videos, Patty. I think they're wonderful. Your illustration of tension issues arising from the way many RU-vid knitting teachers demonstrate Continental alone was absolutely brilliant and worth its weight in gold.
@lallaward2862
@lallaward2862 6 месяцев назад
This is SUCH a great improvement. Do you anywhere show how to tink this SSK, Patty? I’m stupidly struggling! I guess I could try and deconstruct and make sense of it, but it would be a quicker learning curve if you’ve already told us somewhere!
@PattyLyonsKnitting
@PattyLyonsKnitting 6 месяцев назад
Tinking this ssk is no different than tinking a standard SSK with one small difference. With a traditional ssk, when you tink it, you then have to reverse both stitch mounts. Here after you insert your needle back to front into both stitches to tink them, you only have to reverse the first stitch mount. To REALLY understand how to tink increases and decreases (as well as tons of other fixes) check out this class - pattylyons.com/product/advanced-fixes-in-knitting-23/

How could this work for a Combination knitter? I know a Left leaning decrease is a knit 2 together in combination but could this be applied to a Right leaning decrease, which we work as an SSK?
@PattyLyonsKnitting
@PattyLyonsKnitting 2 года назад
No. They are totally different structures. A left leaning decrease needs stitch #1 to sit on top of stitch #2. Whatever stitch your needle first enters ends up on top. A right leaning decrease is stitch #2 sitting on top of stitch #1. You have to work into the leading leg to work these stitches not twisted, so that means for the Western knitter, reseating the left slanting dec and for the Eastern knitter, reseating the right slanting dec. You can learn more about it here: pattylyons.com/product/improve-your-knitting/

@@PattyLyonsKnitting I actually hold the yarn in my right hand, and knit right side rows towards the right. The mirror image of a Right handed Continental knitter, except my stitches are mounted with the leading leg behind the needle. My Nana was an Irish Immigrant who knit Eastern European style. She taught me to knit when I was 5, 30 years ago, by sitting across from me. I’ve actually gotten really good at Right handed Combination knitting, holding the working yarn in my Left hand and working Right side rows towards the Left, by watching Russian knitting tutorials!
