Patrick Cappiello, the award-winning wine director at Rebelle in New York City, regularly drinks some of the best wines in the world, but we wanted him to drink like us everyday folk. So we went to the supermarket to find Cabernets you can easily get across the country for under $15-Trader Joe’s Charles Shaw, Lindeman’s, Columbia Crest, Beringer, J. Lohr-and had him do a blind taste test. Some were absolutely awful, but some, to his surprise, were actually good. Check out the video to see which wines are a great value the next time you’re at the grocery store and which ones fail miserably.

I would like to see Patrick blind taste a range of wines ranging from supermarket table wines to a bigger name, such as Silver Oak or something like that. But don't tell him the price points of the wines. Curious to see his reactions.
@ianchen6269

Keith Walker I don't think the point of having a sommelier is so that people can attempt to trick him. He is the one giving recommendations across all price ranges. I'm sure some lower costing wines might taste better than expensive ones if your lucky or unlucky.
@kylegordon1520
@kylegordon1520 6 лет назад
The point is to trick them so we can tell if he's somewhat legitimate, and actually trust his ratings. All of the recent research around sommeliers says that their supposed objectivity is bullshit, and wine tasting is all subjective.

@Simon-nv5zj 4 года назад
@@houlester i for one would love to see that. since in nearly every single other video ive watched, sommeliers dont actually have a clue most of the time. maybe its not their fault, maybe it's because wine, in general, can be so inconsistent.
@MattWestwick
@MattWestwick 3 года назад
@@Simon-nv5zj Think diminishing returns. $10 wines are going to be a crapshoot of half decent versus half crappy. $100 wines are all (hopefully) going to all be in the same spectrum in terms of quality. Picking a winner in the $10 category is much easier (basically looking for a well balance wine that fits style guidelines with no obvious flaws) versus the $100 category (all wines are well balanced with no obvious flaws - you are basically judging based on personal opinion at that point) TL;DR - I'll trust a sommelier up to about $50

I'm not a wine lover but I came here looking for something to use as braising liquid (they say don't cook with a wine you wouldn't drink on its own). So I figured a store wine wouldn't break the bank. I picked the lindeman bin 45 cabernet and OMG it's the first wine I genuinely like the taste of! I'm so glad this video exists! Thank you!

I actually worked at the Columbia Crest winery! I only worked there for a couple days lol, but when I was there one of the lead scientists gave me a tour and took me to their gift shop, where he mentioned all employees got wine at a discount (I forget the percentage, but it was pretty generous). Now almost two years later when I’m starting to get into wine, part of me wishes I would’ve bought a couple bottles lmao. Side note, we toured the manufacturing process and there was so much wine it was fucking insane. So many bottles packaged as far as I could see in a huge warehouse, and seeing hundreds of thousand gallon vats of wine being produced was a really cool experience

Again - I think the culprit is, that he knew that these were supermarket wines. It would have been so much more interesting to mix different type of wines at different price points blind...
@AlwaysIllBlood
@AlwaysIllBlood 7 лет назад
The purpose of these taste tests are not to put the Sommeliers credentials into question. He gave good ratings for wines from the supermarket however and that, to my not so cynical self, is much more interesting.
@Dominikmj
@Dominikmj 7 лет назад
CaotsIII The issue is, that in a lot of competitions (!) and other wine tasting events, sommeliers tasting wine - the issue is, that the ratings are random as best - and this is since a couple of years (from different sources) pretty established. Hence blind tasting wines really doesn’t mean anything if the tasting is not made absolutely perfect. I understand - that you are not up for the nitty gritty - but there should be any point of a tasting - don’t you agree?
@AlwaysIllBlood
@AlwaysIllBlood 7 лет назад
Dominik MJ Well, keep in mind that in those competitions they are tasting really high level wines which at that point, the quality of it can often come down to preference. What you're referring to is a test of whether this guy can taste a bad wine from a good wine. Which, again, is not the purpose of these taste tests. Instead, the purpose is to say which is the best tasting wine from the supermarket according to an experienced and accomplished sommelier. Which in my opinion is a much more noble pursuit than trying to catch someone being bad at their job.
@Dominikmj
@Dominikmj 7 лет назад
CaotsIII No - they don’t. Good try - but they taste throughout the different levels. A lot of competitions ask the vineries to send in bottles (and there is even an admission fee) - that means a lot of commercial products are tested - small fine producers often don’t have the resources to send their wines to a lot of competitions. I also don’t say, that he is anyway bad in his job. But being sommelier is... a lot of bullshitting (maybe they are even subconsciously bullshitting themselves) - but it is pretty obvious - there are several research papers out, which suggest this. I am working in hospitality (focus on beverages) for 20 years. Wine is not my focus - however I am pretty interested in this whole subject - and I read a ton of articles, from all perspectives.
@AlwaysIllBlood
@AlwaysIllBlood 7 лет назад
Dominik MJ So as a person that works in beverages, you'd rather see a frivolous fluff piece than something that is at the very least informative to the every day consumer? That's super petty. Pessimism is a poor way to see life.

Question from a teetotaler. What if you buy an inexpensive supermarket wine and age it, say for a couple of years. Would it improve?
@MalakianM2S
@MalakianM2S 8 лет назад
+mwrkhan Not an expert myself, but the place where you put a wine to age is really important; humidity, light, the position of the bottle, temperature. Some old wines are just vinegar.
@pbindulgence
@pbindulgence 8 лет назад
+mwrkhan Aging isn't something that benefits all wines across the board-most wines you'll find at the supermarket are not considered "age-worthy" in that they won't appreciably improve with storing them for a few years. This is because wines at the supermarket are generally made with the intent of drinking pretty soon after purchase.

@chiueugene
@chiueugene 7 лет назад
Sweetness is one of the many things you pursue in a good wine, but it should not be over the top sweet. Also, there are 2 kinds of sweetness, 1 is the natural kind you get from the grapes whilst the other one is artificially added - the former is always preferred and the difference is clear once you taste more. On top of sweetness, you pursue other flavors such as the acidity, bitterness, body etc... and all these flavors have to achieve some balance for a bottle to be considered good. I am not in the wine industry but I am in the specialty coffee line where we preach and describe a lot of things very similarly to wine.

Joy Dey in wine terminology, dry is the opposite of sweet. Sweetness is higher in wines like moscato or sweet reds, and even some Rieslings, but almost non existent in other varieties. Most red wines are dry. (Though some are fruit forward, meaning you taste fruit flavors) but being fruity does not mean the same as sweet. Most whites are dry as well, with a few exceptions.

He knows he's tasting wines under $15 so he's forming opinions before he has objective knowledge. He starts off by saying it smells like piss, then says it's bitter and too sour and he says he's making a bad face, those are all negative, with maybe the exclusion of the raisins, if you like raisins. They should just tell him he's going to try wines and rate them, nothing else. If you think I'm bullshitting you, try it yourself; buy a cheap beers and test against expensive beers; same for wines, tequilas, and whiskeys- people and (even somms) cannot tell the difference.
@halfthefiber
@halfthefiber 7 лет назад
Be that as it may, he graded the wines he drank on their own merit. He may have prior opinions about cheap wine-he is a sommelier, after all-but they definitely didn't come into play for this video. So what if he made faces and described them as smelling of piss, he still gave deserving wines high marks. If he came to the tasting with biases associated with cheap wines, none of what he drank would get a grade higher than a C (and that's him being generous).
