Season 2 - Episode 18 - Reese Cooks
Hal : Reese, do you know what empathy is?
Reese: No.
Hal: Well, empathy is putting yourself in other people's shoes so you can feel what they do. If you hurt someone, empathy makes you hurt as well.
Reese: Then why would you want empathy?

Me too. I think given the fact that Lois had realized that no matter how much she tries to make Reese change, he will still be the same degenerate troublemaker he is. In giving up on him, it showed she had no hope for Reese changing and just simply wanted him out of her life. Hence it's why Lois was more focus on forcing herself on Malcolm's future since like Dewey, he's the only other Wilkerson son that will amount to success. She originally had planned to make Francis the President of the US, but he rebelled against her plans early on and started living a similar life to Hal's own. His current job is sorting out computer chips at Amerisys and only Hal found out about the job. Francis admits he loves his job there, but also equally enjoys tormenting Lois by telling her that he's unemployed.

Lois is a good cook herself since the boys aren't apprehensive about her meals just the Leftover casserole that had a leftover Leftover Casserole at the bottom, but Reese's sheer talent in comparison spoiled the family. Except that Lois had already planned for not only Malcolm and Dewey's futures, but also Francis and Jamie's. For Francis, she had planned for him to take on a Chief Justice role in the Supreme Court. Unfortunately, he rebelled by quitting school and living a life similar to Hal's own much to Lois' dismay. For Malcolm, it was a US President. Lois planned for Dewey to be a rich musician. It's unknown for Jamie, but I'm guessing that she has plans for him to be a congressman. Out of her sons, Reese is the only one that Lois didn't plan for his future. This is because no matter how much she tries to get him prepared for the real world by rehabilitating him, Reese will still be the same degenerate delinquent he is. Hence, Lois gave up on trying to make something out of him.

The ending I would've loved for Reese, is him ending up in a restaurant. Not a fancy one, but just an affordable, "regular" restaurant. And then shots of the patrons eating his food for the first time and being more than pleasantly surprised, even though they've been at the restaurant dozens of times before, and one of them owns a chain of popular restaurants and wants to take on Reese, etc, fighting his way back to the kitchen...and the rest is left up to the imagination. The start of something big and the evidence that his talent will be discovered and appreciated in the way it should be....I don't think about this like every day, since the show ended. Not at all... 😉

We saw Reese being motivated in something he liked to do in his brief stint in the cooking class of Reese Cooks, making a delicious Thanksgiving meal in Thanksgiving(which Malcolm ruined), was living in his own apartment in Reese's Apartment and his brief stint in the military in Reese Joins the Army. However, this never lasted long because of who he is inside. The problem was that Reese didn't care about his future at all. He was very undisciplined, destructive and that he only saw cooking as a hobby. Hal accepted Reese was hopeless a long time ago, but Lois refused to accept it. It took three tries for her to finally give up on him mainly due to the fact of how hardheaded and stubborn she was. No matter how much Lois tried to motivate Reese and get him ready for the real world, he's still going to be the same delinquent he is. Remember his role model aside Francis(before his maturing in late season 3 and season 4), is Ida and he has a lot of her greedy and selfish traits. Maybe like Craig, Reese did accept that his life would be nothing more than a pile of garbage. It doesn't mean he can't enjoy every single moment of it. Hal knew this, which is part of the reason why he secretly made a deal with Mr. Hodges to let Reese have a job as an assistant janitor at his former school. He knew that Reese would be happy in a place where he can enjoy the simple things in life. Being a janitor did that for him and more

Empathy is generally learned early as a child- children play together, and they like rough housing, and in order to continue to play they have to avoid actually hurting each other because then the play would stop. In order to avoid hurting each other, but continue being as rough as they can without breaking that limit, they have to learn how to "feel" how the other children feel about thing A, B, C, etc, and avoid such things if they hurt too much. Yeah, I know. When I was a child, I just thought Reese was a dumb bully but was still good at heart, as there were occasionally, sweeter episodes where he would be thoughtful e.g. when he tried to stop Dewey from wearing a girl's bag to school as he'll likely get beaten up, or be caring to Malcolm when he was tricked into thinking he was gay. However, when I re-watched the series a bit older, I realised he is a sociopath, he just shows sympathy on very rare occasions when something touches him. I don't know if you've seen Futurama, but I had the same realisation with Bender on that show. It's an interesting experience re-watching an adult show you saw as a child, you tend to realise a lot of new things about it that went over your heard before.

@tornadochaser2457
@tornadochaser2457 6 лет назад
Lunar Village I don't think so, Reese displays sociopathic tendencies right from season one, they're just more pronounced a bit later as there are episodes focused on him. The Simpsons had a really big influence when it came out, so I wouldn't be surprised if this show's creators took inspiration from Bart for him, and maybe took some of the more sociopathic traits from Cartman in South Park, or something like that. I think Reese is a great character by the way, the diverse and unique characters on this show are part of what make it good, and he really fits into the show's theme of life being unfair and the world being a battleground for survival. Plus, it's quite interesting seeing kids grow up with a sociopath, it feels like it's never been done before. This show is edgy and I think it helped push the envelope of what could be done in a TV sitcom, I think this family is in contention for the most dysfunctional one ever displayed on a TV sitcom.
@peebay3515
@peebay3515 6 лет назад
I don't think he's a full fledged sociopath because he does care about his family. He beat up a lot of kids for making fun of Malcolm . I think it goes with the theme of bullies tend to be dumb and that eventually they get their comeuppance for being stupid. Reese becomes a janitor and lives with Craig. The last scene has him buying a thoughtful gift for Craig if I remember correctly.

Hilarious scene but also I love how psychologically and familially realistic the show is. Each of the boys are versions of Hal and Lois and where Reese really gets his dark side and reckless nature from is Lois as we saw in one of the best episodes ever Lois Strikes Back. And where she got hers from is of course her mother. I loved the mother\son bonding at the end as they shoot paint balls at that evil bitchy girl and her date.

It depends on the episode. Sometimes, she's a caring mom who goes to extremes because her kids are extreme & she sometimes makes mistakes because she's trying to keep up. In other episodes, she's just a cruel control freak for no reason. Like when she spanked Malcolm in public because he accidentally got caught between promises to two different & could only uphold one & she was butthurt that the one he made to her didn't automatically take priority. Or when she took their beds & most of their belongings & donated them to charity because she caught them taking gifts. From charity. For poor people. Because they're poor. Because of her refusal to accept charity. She called it stealing but the stuff was free & they were trading it for items of approximately equal value despite having no obligation to do so & despite being poorer than most of the people it was meant for. Or the time she admitted to intentionally sabotaging Dewey's dreams out of spite. Or the time she admitted to intentionally ruining Malcolm's child out of some delusion that suffering would turn him into a good president even though he didn't wanna be president. It's a shame because she's great in episodes where she's just trying her best. Like the one that shows how insane her kids were when they were even younger. And the one where she cancels Christmas in a desperate attempt at getting her kids to finally behave but she secretly feels like a monster for doing it.

I still think he wouldn't have gotten the idea even if Lois had asked him how he'd if he had gone through the same food poisoning that others had. Hal knew that because Reese lacks empathy and thus told her to save her words. That is why he hit Reese where it hurt him the hardest. Hal knew that being in the kitchen and cooking for his family is his weakness. He calmly punishes Reese by banning him from the kitchen and cooking meals for a month. In turn he was crying over his lost privilege and Lois is impressed over Hal's take on punishment

@pravinrao3669
@pravinrao3669 5 лет назад
No. It has a very simple answer. Empathy is useless in game theory(not the youtube channel the other one) There is no point in having it till everyone has it. If he is asking why would you want empathy the most logical reason would be it would make his life in society easier If he won't be asshole people might help him. He does not actually get any benefit from empathy if he can act like he has empathy. If the option was "why would you want everyone including you to have empathy" Then there could be better answer.

Not really, it's the foundation of what makes us human, that's why the narcissistic, physcopathic and sociopathic disorders are so frowned upon, it makes the person lose that touch that connects us all, through emotion. Without empathy you're alone in a dead sea of forever foreign people. It's not that deep of a problem, you see the effect that no empathy has on the poor souls born with the aformentioned disorders, it's not something you'd wish on your worst enemy. PS: Plus not to mention that we are still animals, we have reason but emotions play a huge role in our decision making, we are not computers, I don't see how the "most logical and effective route" arguments for not wanting empathy work when in a world without empathy your work is a shallow shell of nothingness that will wither in the dead sea of unhearing unconnected ears, to vanish once you perish from this world, nothing to hold your legacy, no one to hold your memory.

@TechnologicallyTechnical
@TechnologicallyTechnical 5 лет назад
@@Thalanox I don't think it's taught, since if empathy could be taught like that, then psychopaths could be treated quite easily. I think it's just more difficult for some people to recognize/relate to emotional pain rather than physical pain, hence why most people cringe when they see things like the amputation scene from 127 hours, but you frequently see people insulting one another.
@ezakustam
@ezakustam 5 лет назад
It's a dangerously incomplete definition of empathy, and that "philosophy" is precisely what's destroying the world. Just because you're comfortable with the scraps you have right now doesn't mean that you're not being tortured and robbed. You have a much better chance of being a professional athlete than ever being in that club. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rvskMHn0sqQ.html

Brian Vasquez as you get older depending on whatever the fuck you do in your life good or bad you start to feel no empathy. If one is raised to be a banger that person will feel no empathy. If raised to be the next mother terrisa then that person can feel it no problem. When I was younger I could feel it a lot more easily. Now as a 20 year old man I can't feel it at all. My point being is if you've done enough bad things eventually that part of the brain just turns off completely.
