Back in my highschool days ( way back, when rocks were soft lol '83 ) Our English teacher made us memorize and quote the prolog to Chauncer's Canterbury Tales, in Old English. plus before that point william had been putting jousting before her. he got to a point where he basically called her useless and only cared about winning and trying to defeat adhemar. so to her it probably seemed as if maybe he only cared about her as a fun plaything, like most men at the time might have, not an equal. so while yes, a little unfair of her to ask him to lose (not like she knew that was the group's only source of income), it was really the only way she could be sure he _actually_ loved her, at least enough to put her first before his sport. it was an unkind method, but somewhat necessary as the tournaments were his top priority, so asking him to "prove" his love another way wouldn't have produced results as reliable as asking him to lose the tournament would.

He was 28 when he died.
