Crystals have a neat geometric molecular structure that results in their natural shapes, and that regularity is what forms the surface and its smoothly regular-repeating patterns on the atomic scale. When a crystal is cut, the cuts go against the crystal grain and introduce atomically-uneven surfaces. Of course the difference is impossibly to see without an electron microscope, but it puts me at ease when I know that the surface retains its intricate geometric structure. It's like when you're drawing lines in pixel art. The vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines look the best because they align with the crystal structure. The lines that don't follow those directions look uneven and jagged. You wouldn't notice with a sufficiently large resolution, but there's still something satisfying about the pure angles.

I wonder how big the pot was that they cooked it in? Also if they grew just one really big crystal or a bunch at once? Or maybe made a big slab and carved or out in that shape? Most likely it isn't an aquamarine, and if it is actually a gemstone not made of resin or glass then it's most likely lab grown. - someone who has been collecting gemstones for more than a decade
