Deer Farming - One of the best Deer Farms in the Galaxy!
Keith Warren is back in Florida to visit some of the best genetics in the universe. Home of some monster deer, Galaxy Whitetails is located near the Villages Retirement community that is famous in the state. Meeting up with friend Steve Munz, Keith gets a front row view of what is no doubt one of the premiere facilities in all of deer farming. A family run operation, Galaxy Whitetails has some fantastic bucks, including 200 plus inch yearlings and the famous breeder, Southern Boy. This is where northern genetics are influencing the Florida market.

Deer & Wildlife Stories with Keith Warren is the voice of the deer industry (TM) airing 5 times on the Pursuit Channel (DirecTV 604 and Dish 393) as well as online in 2020. How do I get started Deer Farming?
The best advice I can give is to watch all our TV shows and learn how other deer farmers operate their farms. Then, contact your state deer farm association and ask to see if they provide any kind of tutoring or educational opportunities. Also, attend deer farming conventions and meet local deer farmers. Finally, I’d suggest visiting as many farms as possible.
What's the best advice Keith has for new Deer Farmers?
Visit as many deer farms as possible and develop a business plan.
What is the North American Deer Registry?
The North American Deer Registry is what I like to refer to as “the holy grail of deer farming”. It has literally hundreds of thousands of animals listed that will provide the breeder with valuable information to assist in breeding, purchasing and selling deer.
How much property do I need to start a deer farm?
Normally the smallest deer pen I like to see if a half acre. Most are an acre in size. So you don’t need a lot of land to build deer pens. Make sure and take into consideration neighbors as deer tend to be high strung and the fewer close by neighbors the better. It’s also advisable to have shade available as well as lots of fresh water that is provided in water throughs.
How do I breed for consistency?
Breeding for consistency is done by choosing proven sires and dams that throw offspring you are seeking to produce.
What is Artificial Insemination and what is the success rate?
Artificial Insemination or what we call in the industry “AI” is a method used to impregnate deer with specific semen so that parentage and offspring can be predetermined.
Why partner on a deer?
There are many reasons to partner of deer but the biggest reason is to lessen the cost to obtain ownership, albeit partial ownership. Partnerships are becoming more commonplace in the deer industry.
What is the best deer feed and feeding schedule?
I’ve fed Record Rack deer feed for over twenty years and have done so because the science that goes into it. Literally, the scientists at Record Rack continue to push the envelope with research and the results are incredible. Most successful deer breeders feed their deer free choice out of some kind of trough feeder so that they are able to monitor consumption on a daily basis. This allows them to be able to determine if there may be health issues with their herd as reduced consumption may indicate some kind of problem.
What are the national deer organizations to join and why?
NADeFA is the North American Deer Farmers Association and their purpose is to represent the deer industry and its members on a national level.
The DBC (Deer Breeders Corporation) also works to represent deer breeders noaas well as support scientific research on whitetail deer.

I see a lot of negative comments about these deer and the farm. I see a man and his family working hard to treat those deer very well! He keeps the deer happy and healthy. The farm looks tidy and clean. So, stop complaining about his "genetically modified deer" and go eat that cheeseburger from the genetically modified cow that you don't complain about.

They all over the US. But as anyone goes down to tropical weather, they don't tend to have big and large horns or antlers. Similar happens with cattles as you might have heard of the long horn vs and pinewoods and florida cracker cattle.

I prefer the typical buck I think he has some awesome deer there. Good luck with them stick with the typical sir I am happy to see someone going for typical horns.Mr. Harvard of Huntington Texas has a few deer , elk, buffalo. But one of his deer I use to feed was a small 6 point that was 26-1/2@ inside from tip to tip 2years in a row, but I didn’t measure the inside bow I know it was at least a foot more all together. That was the second widest set of horns I hav seen on a typical deer

Ran across this video . Was just wondering what the pet deer farmers are doing about the chronic waste disease spreading through our native population . Deer farming is big business in Medina county ,Texas where I live . It is also responsible for the introduction of chronic waste disease in our native population . How about doing a show on that ?

Deer farming is in no way needed to learn about and preserve whitetail deer for generations to come, you ain’t fooling me with all that bull. Don’t act like the deer farming industry isn’t all about the dollar. I’d rather go “hunt” out in the woods and kill a 130” free range wild buck than go sit and shoot a 500” bottle fed, electroejaculated pet deer that’s been interacting with humans it’s entire life any day of the year. I’d maybe go pet and feed them some cookies though.

Deer farms are how hunters like us get deer scents and doe estrus and such. But I'm with you on the "it's not hunting" train. These deer see a human and expect food or water to be given to them, not a lead sandwich. Also they have never seen a predator, human or furry, coyote, wolf bear, whatever depending where you live. They just don't look natural, huge rack on a small head and body. I live in Maine and every year people shoot deer over 300lbs , deer could be 7yrs or older to get that size, yet at 2 yrs old these deer have racks of a cartoon and weigh half that , maybe. To each their own I guess. Cows and horses still live wild in parts of the USA , but farms still grow them and use alot of the same technique this farm does. Alot of dog breeds, horse breeds, and so on come from cross breeding and such alot like this, weather natural or human done, kinda all the same. Anyone who hunts whitetail for real would realize it wouldn't be very hard to harvest one of these deer, but it def wouldnt be near as satisfying or gratifying as a wild natural deer. A wild 1-2 year old buck with spikes would have more whits and smarts then the oldest deer on this farm.

@chadbinette3201

True, especially in what a deer eats, and the harshness of the winter. I live in Maine and up north there are plenty of deer that get to be 300lbs and have a nice rack but don't compare to a deer down south in Georgia or something and a deer might be pushing 200lbs but has alot more antler then that 300lb Maine buck. No snow to deal with, maybe hold antlers longer and start growing sooner. A buck drops his antlers because his body knows winter is coming and the body needs to keep nutrients and not worry about antlers, which take nutrients from the body to grow. Plus they are the same breed technically but a whitetail in Maine and Northeast are quite larger than a deer in Florida.

It's a farm, farms like this is where deer scents and doe estrus comes from. Do you know parts of the USA has spots where cattle and horses still live wild? So should ranches and farms not grow cows and horses because they are in the wild? Most of antler growth in the wild has to do with what they are eating more then genetics, of course genetics helps but it's mostly on what they eat and not having to deal with harsh Winters. I live in Maine and we have deer killed every year 300lbs plus, and they will have nice racks but nothing like you would find in Georgia or some place south, easier winter , body knows when to drop antlers for survival of the winter. Take a 150-170" deer in Georgia might weigh 200lbs vs a deer in Maine pushing 300lbs with half the rack. To each their own, it's not like they are pulling deer from the wild to put in the farm. A wild deer in Florida is much smaller then a wild deer in the Northeast, same species , but talking easily see the difference, almost like a mini version in the Florida.

@@chadbinette3201 hey bud happy holidays. The title is literally GIANT NORTHERN BUCKS IN FLORIDA. so yes at some point they took animals out of the wild. As far as horses and cattle. Sure horses have been domesticated over many years for different purposes, work. Riding, racing. Cattle ( besides Bison) were never indigenous, and are raised for food leather and byproducts. Really cant compare. Im not against raising and manipulating deer for antler growth. Just my opinion that its not natural or impressive in any way. A man made ( Trophy) is not a trophy. And by the way, Wisconsin(northern state) has by far produced more trophy bucks consistently than any other state. Take care.
